Soon the authorities are notified that the children are not being cared for and all but the oldest daughter are sent to The Home for Neglected and Abandoned Children in Denver. Janet the oldest stays with a family in Kit Carson and works for her keep while going to school. The family is good to her and they treat her like one of their own. The oldest boy Charles falls ill while in the Home and dies at the age of fourteen. John and Joseph are sent to work in the coal mines in Durango and Pueblo. Ruth the baby is adopted by a family that moves to Illinois. That leaves Rose who is fifteen to be farmed out to wealthy families in Denver to work for her keep. When she is eighteen she is emancipated from the Home and can go where she pleases. The story follows the paths of each living orphan. Each one has their own memories of the way life was on their journey and how the hardships formed their character. Rose was the only one that seemed to deny the past and so she would bury herself in romance novels and lived her life as a fantasy. She would never talk about her childhood or the years after her parents died until she was emancipated from the Home and her return to Kit Carson. Many times her comment was that she didn't deserve anything better in life.

  • Pages : 193 pages

Download or read book Ignatius of Antioch written by Allen Brent and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2007-06-23 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ignatius of Antioch (died c. 115) is one of the Apostolic Fathers of the Christian Church. In his letters to other churches he re-interpreted church order, the Eucharist and martyrdom against the backcloth of the Second Sophistic in Asia minor by using the cultural material of a pagan society. He so formed the idea and theology of the office of a bishop in the Christian church. This book is an account of the circumstances and the cultural context in which Ignatius constructed what became the historic church order of Christendom. Allen Brent defends the authenticity of the Ignatian letters by showing how the circumstances of Ignatius' condemnation at Antioch and departure for Rome fits well with what we can reconstruct of the internal situation in the Church of Antioch in Syria at the end of the first century. Ignatius is presented as a controversial figure arising in the context of a church at war with itself. Ignatius constructs out of the conflicting models of church order available to him one founded on a single bishop that he commends to Christian communities through which he passes in chains as a condemned martyr prisoner.

  • ISBN : 0307817547
  • Pages : 466 pages

Download or read book The Orphan Brigade written by William C. Davis and published by Doubleday. This book was released on 2012-05-16 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On September 18, 1861, ominous sounds of battle thundering in the distance, the Kentucky legislature voted to align itself with the Union. It was a decision which tore at the heart of the state, splitting apart families and severing friendships. For the newly formed First Kentucky Brigade, it marked a four-year separation from the beloved homeland. Fiercely independent to the end, these men would fight for the cause of the South. With their first march into battle, they became outcasts from their mother state — orphans in the raging strife of civil war. William C. Davis has written a gripping story of the rebel troops whose remarkable spirit and tenacity were heralded throughout the Confederacy. The First Kentucky Brigade was “baptized in fire and blood” at the Battle of Shiloh and went on to serve with great distinction at Vicksburg, Baton Rouge, Chickamauga, and the fight for Atlanta. In this vivid narrative, the author captures the searing drama of each battle, as well as the unbearable drudgery of the months between. We see men of all backgrounds and ranks coming to grips with the war: some of them, renowned leaders such as John C. Breckinridge; others, young soldiers learning the horror of death for the first time. Drawing from a wealth of documents, memoirs, personal letters, and journals, Davis brings to life the fascinating history of the Civil War’s “Orphan Brigade.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Told with an evocative richness of language that recalls Michael Ondaatje or Anita Desai, the story of Reza Khourdi is that of the 20th century everyman, cast out from the clan in the name of nation, progress and modernity who cannot help but leave behind a shadow that yearns for the impossible dreams of love, land and home. Before following his father into battle, he had been like any other Kurdish boy: in love with his Maman, fascinated by birds and the rugged Zagros mountains, dutiful to his stern and powerful Baba. But after he becomes orphaned in a massacre by the armies of Iran's new Shah, Reza Pahlavi I.; he is taken in by the very army that has killed his parents, re-named Reza Khourdi, and indoctrinated into the modern, seductive ways of the newly minted nation, careful to hide his Kurdish origins with every step. The Age of Orphans follows Reza on his meteoric rise in ranks, his marriage to a proud Tehrani woman and his eventual deployment, as Capitan, back to the Zagros Mountains and the ever-defiant Kurds. Here Reza is responsible for policing, and sometimes killing, his own people, and it is here that his carefully crafted persona begins to fissure and crack.
