Book The Origins of Religion and Other Essays Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Origins of Religion and Other Essays Classic Reprint written by Andrew Lang and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-26 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Origins of Religion, and Other Essays With regard to the essay on Apollo and the Mouse, it is to be remembered that animals acquire sacredness in religion in many ways besides what they may inherit from totemism. The works of Mr. J. G. Frazer show that, among agricultural peoples, the Corn Spirit is recognised in a vast number of animal forms, which are prominent in agricultural magic and religion. Thus a sacred animal associated with a god, say the Pig with Demeter, is not necessarily a survival. Of a totem. That the indo-european peoples were once totemic cannot be certainly proved, though many facts point in that direction. When we first meet them in history they have reached a point in civilisation at which we could not expect to discover more than faint and dubious totemic traces. Book The Origins of Religion and Language Considered in Five Essays Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Origins of Religion and Language Considered in Five Essays Classic Reprint written by F. C. Cook and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Origins of Religion and Language, Considered in Five Essays The name given to this book on the title-page was suggested by a friend, and it was adopted by the publisher in its first announcement, under the impression that I had proposed or approved it. I felt, however, and still feel, that such a title may seem to promise too much; but after full consideration I have retained it, on the ground that it expresses, clearly and concisely, the. principles which have guided me throughout the work. In the three Essays on the oldest forms of religion of which we have contemporary or trustworthy records, my object has been to prove that they were derived from a common source, and that all that is true, ennobling, and spiritual in them is due to that origin. In the Essay on the Rig Veda, I have first called attention to the certain fact that, at the period when the hymns were produced, two systems co-existed; the one resting upon a moral and spiritual basis; the other wholly naturalistic, personifying and adoring physical forces and agencies. In the second place, I have insisted upon the no less certain, though too often unnoticed fact that, of these two systems, the former was by far the more ancient, and that it represents the fundamental principles which were recognised by the ancestors of the Aryan race. Book Essays on the Supernatural Origin of Christianity

Download or read book Essays on the Supernatural Origin of Christianity written by George P. Fisher and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays on the Supernatural Origin of Christianity: With Special Reference to the Theories of Renan, Strauss, and the Tubingen School Although this volume does not claim the charac ter of a complete treatise, yet the Essays which com pose it form a connected whole and deal with the most important aspects of the general theme under which they are placed. That theme is the origin of the religion of Christ - whether it be from heaven or of men. The validity of the distinction between the Natural and the Supernatural is assumed, and some thing is done in various parts of the work - for exam ple, in the Essay on Miracles - to elucidate this dis tinction. The fact of the constant presence and agency of God in Nature is held to be perfectly con sistent with the proposition that the world is a reality distinct from Him. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Origins and Faith: An Essay of Reconciliation Anyone who comes into frequent contact with the religious mind of the day must recognise the difficulties lying behind that working Faith which suffices for most of us. It is not that there is an active opposition to religion; it is that Christianity has ceased to provide for many a sufficient answer to the insurgent challenges of modern thought. Although much splendid work has been done by way of reconciliation, the note has been too apologetic, the vindication too partial. The present need is to find a reasonable basis for belief which shall bring into practical agreement the religious and scientific systems, preserving at the same time the essential truth of great traditions. It would indeed he a satisfaction to realise that I have made some contribution to this end. I have intentionally avoided loading the book with references and footnotes, so that it may he followed more easily by the ordinary reader. I acknowledge gratefully the assistance rendered by my friend, the Rev. F. A. Russell, of the King's Weigh House Church, London, in the work of revising for the press. My son, Dr. Arthur Compton-Rickett, has given me similar help. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-03-13 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays in the History of Religious Thought in the West To the Essays on Plato, zeschylus, Euripides, Origen and Dionysius, originally published in the Contemporary Review (1866, 1867, 1878, which formed part of my original design, I have added four others which illustrate the general thought which is suggested by them. The Faith welcomes all truth, while it supplements external lessons by its own peculiar witness, and places partial and limited ex pressions of truth in their right relations to one an other and to the whole. Nothing lies outside the influence of its transfiguring power. Splendid visions burst upon us from unexpected quarters, and we find that they are included in that view of god the world and man which lies in the fact of the Incarnation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pleroma: An Essay on the Origin of Christianity His little book is a mere sketch. With concise brevity it treats a great theme - the origin Of Christianity which deserves the attention of the thoughtful. The author concentrates his presentation of the case upon the main features, treating them and them only, with a considerable attention to detail; but he hopes by this limitation to the most salient points to bring clearness into a subject which has never been fully understood on account of the many bewildering side issues that surround and often obscure the main problem. The solution here offered contains some new points of view which the author has gradually gained through his study Of detached portions Of this large subject, yet in all his several inquiries the results have led to the same conclusion which is here summarized. Christianity is not the result Of accident, but of necessity. There are definite causes and definite effects. Its doctrines, its ceremonies, its ethics are the product Of given conditions and the result could not be different. Download or read book The Evolution of Religion Classic Reprint written by William A. Hinckle and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-25 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evolution of Religion The demand for a second edition of this little book within a year is most gratifying, for it would seem to indicate that, in a measure at least, it has fulfilled the purpose for which it was written, namely, to show briefly and in such a way as to appeal to the man of the street that religion is a natural and necessary product of human evolution and not a supernatural revela tion; to show that true religion is ethics, not theology. If these pages help to attain this end the effort was well worth while, for to do this is to have a part in the evolution of the Religion of the Future, Which will mould the people of the future even as religions of the past have moulded the people of the past. While nothing has here been presented that is 'hew to scholars, for the convenience of those who may wish to verify the truths herein set forth or who may wish for further information on these great subjects, the following literature is especially recommended.
