Book excerpt: "But then, equally of course, every man who takes up wrestling seriously will only do so because he is fond of it, because he prefers wrestling to most, if not all, other sports and pastimes. Every wrestler who ever trod the mat is a potential champion. He may not have been endowed with the wrestling instinct, but he will be able to cultivate a high degree of wrestling science, even quickness, if not absolute lightning rapidity of movement, which, if combined with the necessary strength and stamina, may enable him to compete with all but the greatest champions on equal terms. Skill, that is to say, the science of wrestling, can only be cultivated by practice, and the man who takes up wrestling seriously must get as much practice as he can with the most skilful wrestlers. The better his opponents are, the faster will be his progress in knowledge of the art, as also in the power of its application. He can learn a good deal also in another way, and that is by closely watching serious bouts between skilled wrestlers, and by carefully practising such moves as attract his notice." - George Hackenschmidt This is an original version, restored and re-formatted edition of Hackenschmidt's 1909 classic. Book excerpt: Albrecht Dürer is probably the most famous German artist of the Renaissance, if not of all time. His works are world-famous and he was a master in numerous artistic disciplines such as woodcut, copperplate engraving, drawing and painting. What is less well known is that he was interested in weapons and fencing throughout his life. He produced several woodcuts for a tournament book by Emperor Maximilian I, but he devoted himself much more thoroughly to the subject of duels in his own extensive fencing manuscript. Dürer’s fight book stands out from the mass of illustrated fencing manuscripts because of its outstanding quality. In well over 100 elaborate drawings, the master uniquely depicts dynamic pairs of fighters practising contemporary combat techniques, such as wrestling or sword and dagger fighting. Since its creation more than 500 years ago, the fight book has never been published in its entirety. This edition offers the complete contents of the manuscript for the very first time: All illustrations are reproduced in color and the complete text is presented in a letter-perfect transcription as well as a translation into modern English. Albrecht Dürer's fight book offers a unique, new look at Dürer the artist and Dürer the fighter.

Book Feminist Rhetorical Resilience

Download or read book Feminist Rhetorical Resilience written by Elizabeth A Flynn and published by University Press of Colorado. This book was released on 2012-06-16 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although it is well known in other fields, the concept of “resilience” has not been addressed explicitly by feminist rhetoricians. This collection develops it in readings of rhetorical situations across a range of social contexts and national cultures. Contributors demonstrate that resilience offers an important new conceptual frame for feminist rhetoric, with emphasis on agency, change, and hope in the daily lives of individuals or groups of individuals disempowered by social or material forces. Collectively, these chapters create a robust conception of resilience as a complex rhetorical process, redeeming it from its popular association with individual heroism through an important focus on relationality, community, and an ethics of connection. Resilience, in this volume, is a specifically rhetorical response to complicated forces in individual lives. Through it, Feminist Rhetorical Resilience widens the interpretive space within which rhetoricians can work.

Book Bothner s Handbook of Wrestling

Download or read book Bothner s Handbook of Wrestling written by George Bothner and published by . This book was released on 2023-02-16 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This "scientific" wrestling text was well received with for its step by step analysis of various holds, counters and escaped, as practiced in "catch-as-catch-can" wrestling. Published by Fox Publications in 1905 under its original title Scientific Wrestling, it was richly illustrated with photography. However, because of the limitations both of photography and press printing of that period, all images had to be reworked, recolored and reimagined for this edition. The original cover from 1905 is included in the introduction, and can be considered indicative of the original state of all the images. In updating the pictures, we had as our goal a clarification of the various positions, while also showcasing the gracefulness and intricacies of the action. What results is a performance that looks almost like a flip book of kinetic wrestling sequences. We strived to convey the sensual appeal that wrestling held and most likely still holds for its practitioners in a culture that discourages any physical contact of males outside of antagonistic relationships. Please enjoy the visual aspects as much as you appreciate the wrestling science presented by the great George Bothner. The book is now in the public domain, and is being repurposed by Ferrandina Press under the guidance of Dominic Ambrose, with his extensive re-elaboration of it's 90 illustrations. The book includes the 66 plates of wrestling, plus an extensive forward section compiled by the Fox Publishers explaining the state of wrestling of the time, including the rules for various wrestling styles. It is an invaluable resource for those interested in the evolution of wrestling over the 20th century. There are also many portraits of wrestlers included in this section, meticulously reworked by Ferrandina Press for your enjoyment. And finally, a visual catalog of fifteen Fox Publishers books.
