Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Original Secession Magazine for 1885-86, Vol. 17 Recognising this principle, the tendency of events, whatever it may have been during the past year, acquires great importance. The im mediate future to the discerning eye is revealed in it. The task of reviewing the history of the past year in the various parts of the earth or even in the narrow limits of our sea-girt home, is one of too huge dimensions, and of too difficult a nature, to be attempted here. But, as representing a branch of the Christian Church, exhibiting a public testimony for truth, we may cast a glance at the general tendencies which have manifested themselves in their bearing upon that cause for the maintenance of which we exist. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Original Secession Magazine for 1865-66, Vol. 7 The basis of all duty, on man's part, is laid in the announcement of the same principle Whether therefore ye eat or drink, or what soever ye do, do all to the glory of God. This is the motive principle of worship in earth and heaven. If the saints on earth rejoice, they rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. If they rely on the divine promises, they are all yea and amen in Christ Jesus, to the glory of God the Father. If they give thanks, it is that the thanksgiving of many may redound to the glory of God. If they confess Christ as Lord, it is to the glory of God the Father. And so, also, in heaven, whether itho Isaiah, or Daniel, or Stephen, or John, who, in vision, is permitted to look within the vail, the same glory is revealed - the same ascriptions of glory tendered. The new song - the Te Deum of the upper sanctuary, - is, Blessing, and honour, and glory, and power, he unto Him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb, for ever and ever. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Original Secession Magazine for 1877-78, Vol. 13 Doctrine - which would put asunder what God has joined together which would represent as standing in perpetual con ict, what God has linked together in perpetual harmony. Who that with any degree of care notes the spirit of the age, is not familiar with such expressions as these, Why insist so much on mere dogma, barren doctrine? Let there only be a consistent life. Let a man be sober, 'chaste, benevolent and upright in all his dealings, and it matters little what principles he holds. We are tired of theory. Give us practice. With all their declamation, however, against dogma and doctrine, they are in themselves, and in their conduct, the most complete specimens of the dogmatism they condemn. The only difference between them and those who both practically and theoreti cally base right action upon right principle is, that while the one insist upon their line of thought and conduct without a fixed law to guide them, the other do so in accordance with a clearly defined standard of truth and duty. The one may be represented by the ship traversing the trackless ocean, without a chart to guide, or rudder to steer, having no definite port in prospect, but allowed to drift hither and thither at the mercy of wind and tide; the other by the ship whose whole nautical arrangements are complete and in good condition, and sailing steadily and surely to the destined haven. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Civil War changed the United States in many ways—economic, political, and social. Of these changes, none was more important than Emancipation. Besides freeing nearly four million slaves, it brought agricultural wage labor to a reluctant South and gave a vote to black adult males in the former slave states. It also offered former slaves new opportunities in education, property ownership—and military service. From late 1862 to the spring of 1865, as the Civil War raged on, the federal government accepted more than 180,000 black men as soldiers, something it had never done before on such a scale. Known collectively as the United States Colored Troops and organized in segregated regiments led by white officers, some of these soldiers guarded army posts along major rivers; others fought Confederate raiders to protect Union supply trains, and still others took part in major operations like the Siege of Petersburg and the Battle of Nashville. After the war, many of the black regiments took up posts in the former Confederacy to enforce federal Reconstruction policy. Freedom by the Sword tells the story of these soldiers' recruitment, organization, and service. Thanks to its broad focus on every theater of the war and its concentration on what black soldiers actually contributed to Union victory, this volume stands alone among histories of the U.S. Colored Troops.
