Book From Movement to Government

Download or read book From Movement to Government written by Visalakshi Menon and published by Sage. This book was released on 2003 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For a long time the provincial autonomy phase of the Indian national movement was largely ignored by historians. However, it is now becoming increasingly evident that vital changes in power equations occurred during that period. Starting from this premise, Visalakshi Menon provides a detailed account of the Congress Ministry of 1937-39 in the United Provinces and explores the internal dynamics of an organization performing the dual function of a government in power and a movement spearheading the anti-imperialist struggle. She amply demonstrates that this period was not a dormant one as generally believed, and that it actually `pulsated with a new life and a new vision`.

Book The Provincial Deputation in Mexico

Download or read book The Provincial Deputation in Mexico written by Nettie Lee Benson and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2014-05-16 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mexico and the United States each have a constitution and a federal system of government. This fact has led many historians to assume that the Mexican system of government, established in the 1820s, is an imitation of the U.S. model. But it is not. In this interpretation of the independence movement, Nettie Lee Benson tells the true story of Mexico's transition from colonial status to a federal state. She traces the Mexican government's beginning to events in Spain in 1808–1810, when provincial juntas, or deputations, were established to oppose Napoleon's French rule and govern the country during the Spanish monarch's imprisonment. These provincial deputations proved so popular that ultimately they became the established form of government throughout the provinces of Spain and its New World dominions. It was the provincial deputation, not the United States federal system, that provided the model for the state legislative bodies that were eventually formed after Mexico won its independence from Spain in 1821. This finding—the result of years of painstaking archival research—strongly confirms the independence of Mexico's political development from U.S. influence. Its importance to a study of Mexican history cannot be overstated.

Book The Origins of Canadian and American Political Differences

Download or read book The Origins of Canadian and American Political Differences written by Jason Kaufman and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-02-16 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do the United States and Canada have such divergent political cultures when they share one of the closest economic and cultural relationships in the world? Canadians and Americans consistently disagree over issues such as the separation of church and state, the responsibility of government for the welfare of everyone, the relationship between federal and subnational government, and the right to marry a same-sex partner or to own an assault rifle. In this wide-ranging work, Jason Kaufman examines the North American political landscape to draw out the essential historical factors that underlie the countries’ differences. He discusses the earliest European colonies in North America and the Canadian reluctance to join the American Revolution. He compares land grants and colonial governance; territorial expansion and relations with native peoples; immigration and voting rights. But the key lies in the evolution and enforcement of jurisdictional law, which illuminates the way social relations and state power developed in the two countries. Written in an accessible and engaging style, this book will appeal to readers of sociology, politics, law, and history as well as to anyone interested in the relationship between the United States and Canada.

Book The Social Origins of the Welfare State

Download or read book The Social Origins of the Welfare State written by Dominique Marshall and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2011-04-07 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Social Origins of the Welfare State traces the evolution of the first universal laws for Québec families, passed during the Second World War. In this translation of her award-winning Aux origines sociales de l ́État-providence, Dominique Marshall examines the connections between political initiatives and Québécois families, in particular the way family allowances and compulsory schooling primarily benefited teenage boys who worked on family farms and girls who stayed home to help with domestic labour. She demonstrates that, while the promises of a minimum of welfare and education for all were by no means completely fulfilled, the laws helped to uncover the existence of deep family poverty. Further, by exposing the problem of unequal access of children of different classes to schooling, these programs paved the way for education and funding reforms of the next generation. Another consequence was that in their equal treatment of both genders, the laws fostered the more egalitarian language of the war, which faded from other sectors of society, possibly laying groundwork for feminist claims of future decades. The way in which the poorest families influenced the creation of public, educational, and welfare institutions is a dimension of the welfare state unexamined until this book. At a time when the very idea of a universal welfare state is questioned, The Social Origins of the Welfare State considers the fundamental reasons behind its creation and brings to light new perspectives on its future.
