It is a general rule, that corporations must take and grant by their corporate name. 2 Kent Com. 291. A corporation aggregate can have no predecessor, and in a writ of right can only count on its own seizin. A statute of 1772, in Massachusetts, provided that twelve persons should be chosen annually by the inhabitants of the town of Boston as over seers of the poor, and they were duly incorporated. In 1822 the town of Boston was changed to a city, the act providing for the election of a board of overseers for the city who shall have all the powers and be subject to all the duties now, by law, pertaining to the overseers of the poor for the town of Boston. It was decided, upon great consideration - Shaw, C. J., deliver ing the opinion - that this was a continuance, and not a dissolution or saspow oion, of the corporation of 1772; that the bodies were public corporations, aggregate and not sole, with perpetual succession; that a grant to them of real estate carried the fee, without being, to their successors, and that in a writ of right they can count only upon their own seizin within thirty years next before the commencement of the action. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Philadelphia, Vol. 1: A History of Municipal Development, 1681-1887 The purpose Of this work is to record the history Of the develop ment of the municipal institutions of Philadelphia to trace, with considerable detail, the many changes in the powers, duties, and posi tion Of the mayor; in the election, appointment, and powers Of the other executive Officers; in the position and relation Of the various departments; in the legislative and executive powers Of councils; in the frequently shifting distribution Of executive power between the mayor and councils; in the procedure Of councils, and in the financial system of the city. Such a history is of peculiar interest to students of municipal questions, because the development of the government Of Philadelphia begins with the most characteristic form of a mediaeval English borough corporation, and, after passing through almost every system and phase Of municipal institutions, ends with a charter em bracing the latest ideas Of municipal government. Book Municipal Ownership in Great Britain Classic Reprint

Download or read book Municipal Ownership in Great Britain Classic Reprint written by Hugo Richard Meyer and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Municipal Ownership in Great Britain This book is the second of a series of four books which will give the results of the authors examination of the actual working, in important instances, of the public regulation and the government ownership and operation of the so-called public service industries: the railway, the telegraph, the street railway, the electric light, the electric power plant, and the telephone. The investigations in question have been carried on since the fall of 1892, and they have covered the United States, Great Britain, Germany, and Australia. The books embodying the results of the investigations will follow each other in quick succession. But that does not mean that they are in any way hasty productions. It has been the authors policy to delay publication until he had covered the entire field, because he desired to put at the disposal of the public the means of comparing the experience of several countries in the various kinds of experiments, without long intervals between the successive books setting forth that experience. This book was released on 2017-11-02 with total page 870 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Treatise on the Law of Municipal Corporations We have popularized and made use of municipal institutions to such an extentas to constitute one of the most striking features of our government. It owes to them, indeed, in a great degree, its decentralized character. When the English Municipal Corporations Reform Act of 1835 was passed there were in England and Wales, excluding London, only two hundred and forty-six places exercising municipal functions; and their aggregate population did not exceed two millions -of people. In this country our municipal corporations are numbered by thousands, and the inhabitants subjected to their rule by millions. Book City Government in the United States

Download or read book City Government in the United States written by Alfred R. Conkling and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from City Government in the United States: With a Chapter on the Greater New York Charter I proposed to write a primer, as it were, of the science of city government. I wish to set citizens to thinking. Let them work out their own municipal destiny in the light of common sense and modem science. There is, so far as I know, not one popular book in the English language on municipal government. Maurice Block's Paris: Organisation Municipale is a very entertaining book, written in a dialogue form, which enables any French child to understand the government of the beautiful French capital. English and American writers have discussed in book form every phase of political science except popular municipal government. This omission does not wholly account for the faults of city government in the United States; but, if intelligent men had studied in text-books the science of city government as they learn the principles of political economy in high schools and colleges, it is not too much to say that our cities would be better ruled. It is said that "comparisons are odious," but every well-informed person must admit that in comparing American cities with those of the Old World we suffer by the comparison.
