Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Origin of Finger-Printing The following pages have two objects: first, to place on record the genesis of the Finger-print method of personal identification, from its discovery in Bengal in 1858, till its public demonstration there in 1877 - 8 secondly, to examine the scanty suggestions of evidence that this use of our fingers had been foreshadowed in Europe more than a hundred years ago, and had indeed been general in ancient times, especially in China. In later years, and in energetic hands, the method has been developed into a system far more effective than anything I contemplated, and I do not go into that part of the story; but I believe these pages will suffice to show the originality of my study of its two essential features, the strict individuality and the stubborn persistence of the patterns on our fingers. Book excerpt: A poignant story of danger, love, and trust, Finger Prints is a cherished classic from New York Times bestselling author Barbara Delinsky Once upon a time she was Robyn Hart, a dogged journalist covering an arson case who saw too much and wasn't afraid to expose it. But that courage nearly cost Robyn her life. Now under the safety of the Witness Protection program, she has a new identity—Carly Quinn—with a new job in a new city. As she struggles to make the best of her new life in Boston, the terror of the past still lingers, and Carly lives in fear that her enemies will find her. Though she tries to wall herself off from the world, one determined man breaks through her defenses—successful attorney Ryan Cornell. Though Carly yearns to give him her heart, she doesn’t know if she can. While loving him offers a happiness she thought she'd lost forever, trusting him could cost her everything. Riveting, emotionally charged, and full of memorable characters, Finger Prints exemplifies the extraordinary storytelling that readers love from Delinsky.

Book Finger Prints Simplified

Download or read book Finger Prints Simplified written by James Holt and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-09 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Finger Prints Simplified: A Handbook of the Science of Finger Print Identification It must not be assumed that this book proposes to show that the science of finger prints is one of the simplest of subjects and the most easily understood. On the contrary, it is a somewhat difficult subject and one that requires conscien tious study and concentration for its mastery. Let it be remembered that this is a new science, the accomplishments and possibilities of which are only beginning to be recognized. Here it might be well to warn the student that a care less and perfunctory study will never make him an expert. And unless he is really expert in the various branches of the art, his work will be mediocre and unreliable. There are numbers, whole species indeed, of extinct jelly fishes the existence of which has never been known directly, but that there once were such beings in the world has been confidently deduced from the permanent impressions their soft and perishable bodies have left in the fine texture of certain rocks.
