Book The Origin of All Religious Worship Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Origin of All Religious Worship Classic Reprint written by Dupuis Dupuis and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Origin of All Religious Worship Many persons having desired, that I should give to the public an abridgment of ray larger work on the origin of religious Worship, I have concluded not to delay any longer their expectations. I have therefore condensed the work in such a manner as to present the substance of the principles on which my theory is established, and to give an extract of its most important results, without dwelling much on particulars, which may always be found in the larger edition. This synopsis will be found useful even by those who should possess the first, because it will serve as a guide in the study of many volumes, which on account of the nature of the work, places the ordinary reader beyond the circle of learning usually required, in order to read with profit, and without great effort, a work of erudition. They will find there a succinct result of their studies and precisely that which is desirable to be retained in the mind of those who do not wish to give themselves up entirely to the profound study of antiquity, and yet still desire to become acquainted with its religious spirit. As for those who have not access to the larger edition, they will find in this abridgment an extract of the principles of the new system of explanations. and a sufficiently detailed account of the discoveries to which it has led, as also an idea of those more remote consequences which may result to those, who shall pursue still further the study of antiquity on this newly opened route. It will thus offer to both new ideas, which are not in the larger work. I have divested it, as much as the subject allowed, of that learned matter, which would involve an unusual erudition, in order to place it within the reach of the greatest number of readers possible, because the instruction and the happiness of my fellow men has been and shall always be the object of my labors. Book The Origin of all Religious Worship

Download or read book The Origin of all Religious Worship written by Charles François Dupuis and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2016-05-17 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a re-publication of the work of Charles-Francois Dupuis (1742 - 1809) who wrote this book in 1795 (French). It was translated into English in 1872. Dupuis argued that Christianity was an amalgamation of various ancient mythologies and that Jesus was a mythical character. He argued also that Jewish and Christian scriptures could be interpreted according to the solar pattern, e.g. the Fall of Man in Genesis being an allegory of the hardship caused by winter, and the resurrection of Jesus an allegory for the growth of the sun's strength in the sign of Aries at the spring equinox. He relates the various poems of Hercules and Bacchus to the position of the sun in the zodiac. Purpose od the republication is to contribute to the spiritual enlightenment of man and to keep its information alive."

Book Christian Worship Its Principles and Forms Classic Reprint

Download or read book Christian Worship Its Principles and Forms Classic Reprint written by James William Richard and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Worship, Its Principles and Forms IT is hoped that the present work will be found to supply a want in our theological literature. So far as is known to the authors, there is no work in English that covers the same ground. Yet the interest in liturgics at the present time seems to demand a work treating of the principles and forms of worship in different ages of the Church. Without this general survey of the field, there can hardly be a thoroughly intelligent discussion of liturgical questions. It is believed that the subject as treated in the present volume will be found not only of special interest but also of practical im portance. The work is so arranged as to make, in convenient, sum mary form, a history of worship. In German, so rich in every department of theological literature, the subject has been frequently and ably treated. With the leading German authorities in hand, to many of which reference is made in this work, there is embarrassment from the abundance of materials. While following in the main the general outline of German histories of worship, the present work differs from them in the omission of unimportant details, in the full ness with which a number of typical liturgies are given, and in the relative prominence assigned to worship in the Luth eran Church. The authors have been less anxious to bring forward their own opinions than to furnish the means by which others might be enabled to form independent and' trustworthy judgments. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Worship: Its Origin and Evolution, a Study of the Latin Liturgy P to the Time of Charlemagne This volume contains the description and explanation of the chief ceremonies of Catholic worship as they were performed in the Latin Churches of the West from the fourth to the ninth century. The title is somewhat ambitious, and is not exactly that which I would have chosen. But I did not feel justified in disregarding the suggestions of my publisher, and have had to relegate to the sub-title the description which I had in View. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Worship: Its Origin and Evolution: A Study of the Latin Liturgy Up to the Time of Charlemagne Martens, particularly in that which concerns the ritual of ordination and the dedication of churches. It is, however, specially to the Roman Liturgy that I have directed my researches. Its history is clearly more interesting to us than that of any other, since for centuries it has been the only liturgy of the West. Although I have not hesitated, when I found it pomible, to go back earlier than the fourth century, I have, however, for the most part, confined myself to a less remote chronological period. Attention might be called to very interesting liturgical facts in docu ments anterior to the time of Constantine, but they are isolated facts, and the documents are few, and rarelyand the ancient usages. Such explanations would be interminable. The same may be said of questions, having a direct or indirect theological import, arising from the consideration of certain rites, such, for instance, as the epiclesis of the Mass, the reconciliation of penitents, and ordination. These questions have been carefully discussed by specialists, but in large works commensurate with the importance of the subject and beyond the scope of the task I have undertaken. If at times, when lecturing to an audience previously well prepared, I have been able to offer some solutions of these questions, in furnish ing explanations of technicalities and in referring to other writers, these were episodes which I consider out of place in the present work, where it would be impossible to elaborate them in such a way as to make them clear to the ordinary reader. When once I had resolved to restrict myself solely to the domain of history, it appeared incumbent upon me to avoid a special theological terminology. Not that I ignore such terminology, or do not recognise its utility, but, having no other aim in describing very ancient usages than to represent them as they were practised from the fourth to the eighth century, it seemed best not to speak of them in more precise language than was in use at that date.
