Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Scholar Armed Against the Errors of the Time, Vol. 1 of 2: Or a Collection of Tracts on the Principles and Evidences of Christianity, the Constitution of the Church, and the Authority of Civil Government To enumerate the errors of the time in which we live, is not a pleasing task; it is like dwelling on the symptoms of an epidemical distemper: but to administer such a remedy as the case requires is a work in which every virtuous and benevolent mind will be glad to take a part; and this is the sole object of the present publication. The members of a Society for the Reformation of Principles have no private ends to serve; they arc of no sect, but the sect of the Nuzarenes; nor of any party, but that of the church of England. In pursuance of the plan they have laid down, they find.it their duty to recommend to the notice of young Students, such Tracts as will secur etheir principles, if they are good, or amend them, if they are bad; and bring men back, so far as it can he done, to the religion which prevailed in this church at the reformation. The man who has no good principles, has no reason for being good; and he that is possessed by such as are bad, will act irrationally, unless he acts wickedly. In the execution of this design, we arc obliged to consider what sort of preservatives the times are most in need of, and then to select such pieces as are most likely to answer the purpose. We do not apprehend it is required of us to furnish such writings as arc absolutely perfect, or that the Society will be thought to make itself responsible for every sentence or page of the works it recommends. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1976, Paul Johnson’s exceptional study of Christianity has been loved and widely hailed for its intensive research, writing, and magnitude—“a tour de force, one of the most ambitious surveys of the history of Christianity ever attempted and perhaps the most radical” (New York Review of Books). In a highly readable companion to books on faith and history, the scholar and author Johnson has illuminated the Christian world and its fascinating history in a way that no other has. Johnson takes off in the year AD 49 with his namesake the apostle Paul. Thus beginning an ambitious quest to paint the centuries since the founding of a little-known ‘Jesus Sect’, A History of Christianity explores to a great degree the evolution of the Western world. With an unbiased and overall optimistic tone, Johnson traces the fantastic scope of the consequent sects of Christianity and the people who followed them. Information drawn from extensive and varied sources from around the world makes this history as credible as it is reliable. Invaluable understanding of the framework of modern Christianity—and its trials and tribulations throughout history—has never before been contained in such a captivating work.

The book, there fore, as to its intrinsic merits, must speak for itself, so far as I am concerned; it will do so all the better for the brief analysis of its contents which Dr. Rainy has furnished. I may be allowed, however, to say that, whether exhaustively or suggestively, Dr. Bannerman seems to me to have mastered the entire field, not only in the way of a general survey, but in the way of insight also into all details. Book Gospel and Government the Development of the Christian State Classic Reprint

Download or read book Gospel and Government the Development of the Christian State Classic Reprint written by Wilson Lloyd Bevan and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gospel and Government, the Development of the Christian State The Gospel contains no prescriptions as to Government, therefore the title of this work might be considered misleading. It is not a mere paradox. All that it is intended to suggest is that the people who have accepted the Gospel have also developed a type of government which, because those who have created it adhere to the tenets of Christianity, may be called with at least historical justification a Christian government. The Christian world has adopted democracy and constitutional rule as the highest ideals of government. Why is it that under Islam, Buddism, and other great religions no advance was made in the conception or practice of government? To answer this query requires an explanation, and the most satisfactory explanation is given by history. Christian doctrines, theories and ethics might be taken as a starting point, and they could be shown to result in the kind of individual and social life that the world to-day is striving to obtain. A more convincing, and a more instructive method, is to abide by the witness of history, and show in historical events and movements the origins and the causes that have made the modern Christian State. Book The Government of the Church in the First Century

Download or read book The Government of the Church in the First Century written by William Moran and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-11 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Government of the Church in the First Century: An Essay on the Beginnings of the Christian Ministry The Catholic Church bases her authority to teach and govern on the apostolic succession of her hierarchy. Christ founded a Church, and gave the apostles whom he placed over it certain ecclesiastical powers to be transmitted by them to their successors to the end of time. The ecclesiastical superiors of to-day claim' to teach and rule, not by election or delegation of the faithful, but by a kind of spiritual descent instituted by Christ. In this age of political Liberalism and popular Sovereignty, it is not surprising to find the Church assailed for her oligarchical constitution. Advanced Protestants would have the people supreme in the Church as in the State while the. Modern rationalists would have us believe that our hierarchical jurisdiction is the effect of evolution and the growth of centuries, and that it was unknown and unheard of in the early Church. It is with a View to answering these difficulties that I propose to inquire into the govern ment of the primitive Church, and to Show that its constitution was, in principle, the same in the first century as it is in the twentieth. If one's ability to speak justly of another, is at all proportional to their degrees of mutual conformity in talents and virtues, there are not many persons among the acquaintance of your late pastor, of whatever experience and attainments, who ought to think themselves adequate to a complete description of him. An intimacy of nearly sixteen years, has made him who addresses you very conscious, that his inferiority in age, though a great disqualification, is probably the least considerable point in his unfitness to that undertaking. He was led, however, to hope, that he would receive so much assistance from the papers of his lamented friend, that he might almost make him his own biographer; but, to his great surprise, that peculiar man was found to have left not a sentence about himself, among all his manuscripts; nor have many particulars in his history been ascertained, besides such as are of extensive notoriety. Book Civil Government and Religion

Download or read book Civil Government and Religion written by Alonzo T. Jones and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-25 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Civil Government and Religion: Or Christianity and the American Constitution Tms little work is the outgrowth of several lectures upon the relationship between religion and the civil power, delivered in Minneapolis, Minn., in October, 1888. The interest man ifested in the subject, and numerous requests for the publi cation of the main points of the arguments presented, have led to the issuing of this pamphlet. It is not intended to be exhaust ive in its discussion of any point upon which it treats, but only suggestive in all. The subject is always interesting and im portant, and as there is now a persistent demand being niade for religious legislation, especially in relation to Sunday-keepirig, this subject has hecome worthy of more careful study than it has ever received in this country since the adoption of the national Constitution. The quotations and references pre sented, with connecting arguments, are designed simply to furnish the reader a ready reference, and directions to further study of the subject. It is hoped that the facts presented will awaken more interest in the study of the Constitution of the United States, and may lead to a better understanding of men's rights and liberties under it, than is commonly shown 5 and also to a closer study of the relation that should exist between civil government and religion, according to the words of Christ and the American Constitution.
