This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Origin, Causes and Object of the War IN response to many requests for publica tion in full of the lectures delivered under the title of The Origin, Causes and Object of the War, an attempt has been made to give the substance of many lectures in the form of one. Over twenty have been delivered in various parts of South Africa, and the blendings of so many reports is not easy. Many inter esting details and nearly all the illustra tive incidents have been omitted to keep the publication within reasonable limits. If there is some repetition of important matter it is merely because complete rewriting and recasting would have been necessary to avoid it. Book The Immediate Causes of the Great War Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Immediate Causes of the Great War Classic Reprint written by Oliver Perry Chitwood and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Immediate Causes of the Great War The object of this volume is to narrate briefly the direct causes of the European war as they are given in the published documents of the belligerents. These sources are abundantly adequate for determining the immediate responsibility of each nation and apportioning the guilt for this great crime. It may be thought that, inasmuch as each government in publishing its official correspondence has tried to convict its enemies and clear itself and its allies, the statements made are so biased as not to be accepted as evidence. This, however, is not the case. The documents corroborate each other sufficiently to show that statements of fact given in official despatches by ambassadors to foreign ministers and vice versa can usually be accepted at face value. The numerous cross-references in the published correspondence enable us sometimes to detect false claims based on the omission, misinterpretation, or even the distortion of facts. Some discrepancies, however, are irreducible, and where such occur, the evidence presented by both sides is given. Book Causes of International War Classic Reprint

Download or read book Causes of International War Classic Reprint written by G. Lowes Dickinson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Causes of International War The object of this series is twofold; to disseminate knowledge of the facts of international relations, and to inculcate the international rather than the nationalistic way of regarding them. This latter purpose implies no distortion of facts. It is hoped that the books will be found to maintain a high standard of accuracy and fairness. But their avowed object is not merely to record facts, but to present them in a certain light, and with a certain object. That light is Internationalism and that object the peace of the world. If the series is successful in its purpose it will contribute to what Wells has called the international mind. The object has been to produce the books at a price that shall not be prohibitive to people of small incomes. For the world cannot be saved by governments and governing classes. It can be saved only by the creation, among the peoples of the world, of such a public opinion as cannot be duped by misrepresentation nor misled by passion. The difficulties of that achievement can hardly be exaggerated, but ought not to daunt. And the editor ventures to hope for support for men of good will in this one attempt, among the many others, to enlighten the intelligence and direct the will. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The War in Europe: Its Causes and Results No excuse will be offered for the smallness of this book in comparison with the vastness of its subject. The author has felt a personal need of some knowledge of those conditions of Europe which bear upon the origin of the Great War of 1914. Thence it was a short road to the thought that other Americans might be interested in a brief but systematic statement of the resources, aims, and difficulties of the European powers; the manner in which they became involved in the war; and the probable results of the struggle to Amer ica and to the rest of the world. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The War: Its Causes and Consequences The age is revolutionary. The present is an epoch in the world's history of transition - a sort of moral exodus of the nations - which has lasted now some three centuries; and no stability in governments anywhere, much less here, can be looked for until the passage from the old regime to the new has been completed. To a close observer, the social ebullition in this coun try has long been of a threatening character. From the birth of our government, its elements have been in an uneasy state; and the bosom of society has more than once been agitated by the throes of coming convulsions. The time has arrived for these inevitable disturbances, so long concealed, to manifest their dangerous activity. An open rupture is at last reached; and however it may be allayed temporarily, will be again and again renewed until the foundations of society are broken up, or the principles which now lie at its base are extruded, or so modified by the introduction of others that their excesses will be entirely counteracted. Book The Origins of the World War Vol 1

Download or read book The Origins of the World War Vol 1 written by Sidney Bradshaw Fay and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-19 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Origins of the World War, Vol. 1: Before Sarajevo: Underlying Causes of the War When the World War suddenly set Europe afiame and American public opinion, soon under the influence of propa ganda and war prejudice, began to denounce Germany and the Kaiser as being guilty of causing it, the present writer refused to join in the chorus. His historical sense told him that in this present case, as in the past, no one country or no one man was solely, or probably even mainly, to blame. A little study of the documents in the Blue, Yellow and Orange Books which were early issued by the English, French and Russian Governments quickly convinced him that these documentary publications were by no means so complete and reliable (though more so than the White and Red Books, issued by Germany and Austria) that one could safely base sound and final conclusions upon them, as seemed to be believed by the millions of men and women who read such facile and superficial arguments as those of Mr. James M. Beck, and others who followed his cue. Therefore the present writer during the War re mained silent, except for his discussions of the subject in college class rooms. I have hoped to contribute something towards it by trying to eliminate worn-out dynastic traditions, old diplomatic formulae for so long accepted as international currency, the untruths and half truths of historical law, vague ideas about races and nationalities, inexact and deceptive catchwords, and to replace them by the solid conception, after the manner of Bentham, of a utilitarian policy. Book Causes That Led to the War Between the States Classic Reprint

Download or read book Causes That Led to the War Between the States Classic Reprint written by Jacob Owen McGehee and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-05 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Causes That Led to the War Between the States This paper, or series of papers, originated in a request, seconded by an ardent desire on the part of the writer, to place in the hands of the Daughters of the Confederacy in succinct and convenient form the imperishable truths and incontrovertible facts pertaining to the spirit and origin of the causes that led to the war between the States; thus enabling them more fully to grasp and disseminate those truths among their own membership and hand them down unalloyed and unperverted to future generations of our sons and daughters. The task, once undertaken, was found to be so wide in scope and so comprehensive in character, both as to time and events, that it was impracticable to handle it properly and satisfactorily within the prescribed limits of a single paper and, hence, the treatise has, perforce, grown and amplified into its present form and dimensions. No sadder and more humiliating spectacle presents itself to the men and women of "The Sixties" than to see and hear their children or children's children deprecating or apologizing for the heroic course of action followed by their parents and grandparents during the trying and eventful years of those glorious but terrible times. Book International War Its Causes and Its Cure Classic Reprint

Download or read book International War Its Causes and Its Cure Classic Reprint written by Oscar T. Crosby and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from International War Its Causes and Its Cure The views expressed in this volume first appeared in a pamphlet published in 1911. The general principles concerning the possibility of eliminating international war are deducible from the 8000 years of human history which was available to us before the fatal events of 1914. A student ad, dressing himself to the subject before that date might indeed fail to arrive at sound conclusions, but his failure would not be due to lack of material. It would have been possible, and perhaps from the point of view of current interest desirable, to illustrate the various doctrines presented by citing the incidents of the Great War. On the other hand, very recent happenings involving great passions are always the subject of hottest controversy, and, therefore, scarcely suitable for use in a work which strives, with whatever success, to urge its doctrines on grounds which may be accepted or rejected by readers independently of their nationality. The book was written before the entrance of the United States Government into the war. The delay in publication has been due to the advice of some whose opinions the author was bound to respect.
