Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Origin and Influence of the Thoroughbred Horse It only remains for me to express my gratitude to the many kind friends who have aided me in various ways: Dr James Cossar Ewart, Regius Professor Of Natural History in the University of Edinburgh, has given me much of his time and has read through all my proofs, and twice through those Of the first two chapters; whilst Mr R. I. Pocock, F the Superintendent of the Zoological Society's Garden, Regent's Park, has given me valuable aid by reading the proofs Of the chapter on the Living Equidae. Mr A. E. Shipley, Fellow Of Christ's College, and University Lecturer in In vertebrate Zoology, and editor Of the Cambridge Biological Series, has also read the proofs and has aided me with various suggestions. Had it not been for their criticism and advice the shortcomings Of this book, of which no one can be more sensible than the writer, would have been still more numerous; but for the many that remain I alone am responsible. TO Dr W. L. H. Duckworth, Fellow Of Jesus College, University Lecturer in Physical Anthropology, I am indebted for various important references, and above all for having called my attention to a hitherto unpublished head and neck of a quagga in the Elgin Museum, which I figure and describe (pp. 438 Mr A. W. Howitt, Hon. D.sc., the well-known Australian ethno logist, Of Metung, Victoria, has supplied me with the valuable account Of the feral horses Of Eastern Victoria, which I have embodied; Dr R. S. Conway, Professor Of Latin in Manchester University, and late Fellow Of Gonville and Caius College. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Thoroughbred Horse: His Origin, How to Breed and How Select Him; With the Horse Breeders' Guide Tun author in writing this book and compiling the tabulated pedigrees of the sires to be found in it, has been induced to do so in the hope of their proving useful to those engaged in breeding for the turf, or who are seeking to foster this most popular national amusement. Very many of our largest breeders ignore the lessons taught in the Stud Book and Racing Calendar. I earnestly commend to all the necessity of observing what sources and what course of breeding have produced the best results in England, which may be most properly called the home of the thoroughbred horse. I have given my own views as to the best mode to successfully breed the race-horse, the best mode to select a stallion and breed mare, and the treatment of the same both in the stud and on the farm. I do not expect that all will agree with me, but the ideas expressed and plans suggested will do away with many of the chances incident to breeding. There is much uncertainty, and always will be, attending the best and most careful mode.0f breeding, and this opinion is strongly exemplified in the frequent occurrence of one horse being of very high form and an excellent race-horse, and a full brother or sister being only ordi naryg yet I differ from a. Great many in the opinion that breeding depends entirely upon chance. Accidents and other unforeseen causes, some of them so unim portant and abstruse' as to escape our attention or come within our knowledge, may prevent the best bred and most promising animal from arriving at its natural size and true shape, and a little difference in conformation, symmetry and constitution may make a decided difference in goodness and speed. The foal may be weak and have a delicate constitution, owing to the dam being starved and exposed to hardships while carrying it, or it may have been im properly reared. This proves that great care and knowledge are necessary in rearing horses for the turf, as well as judgment and attention in selecting mares and stallions from which to breed. The chief points are pure blood, confor mation, constitution, racing lineage and hereditary soundness. The nearer we get to true shape with the other points combined, the more certainly we will arrive at excellence. \ve often find a large horse of good shape and racing synnnetrv: but where there is one good large one there are a dozen small or medium sized ones. The greater the size, when combined with the good qual ities. The greater the excellence and the powers, for a good little horse cannot cope with a great good one. Hence size. With constitution, soundness and svmmetrv constitute the height of perfection. While I advocate and commend pnre blood, I am convinced that very often pedigree is the only point at which Some breeders look, ignoring altogether shape and action; hence failures. The. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Thoroughbred Hence mv only endeavors have been to bring this book down to date and modern ize its contents so far as practicable. The great world is in a great hurry just now, and has but little time 'to devote to the perusal of ancient history. So I deal with horses of the last sixty years as much as possible, referring the reader to the works of Col. Bruce for the old days in Virginia; and to Mr. Osborne's work for the ancient occurrences on the turf in England and Ireland. They were both better writers than 1_ am and had ihore extensive libraries upon which to draw for information. Hence 1 make no claim for any great amount of originality in this book, but I can claim truth fully that its construction is more orderly and methodical than that of any book that has yet been published on this subject, either in America or in Europe. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Origin and History of the Horse The subject of the origin and history of the horse is not a simple one. It is a very complex one, because every scientific problem, like every financial problem, has its method of attack - from a number of different points of view. The first of the points to consider is that of the horse as the most perfect animal machine among the quadrupeds. Second, we shall see how this ma chine by purely natural processes evolved from comparatively small and simple beginnings. So we shall follow the evolution of a number of structures which make up this machine, and of the horse as a whole. Third, we shall look at the races, the wild breeds of the family of horses, as they are found in Asia and Africa today, because it is possible that some of these breeds throw some considerable light upon the most interesting of questions, the origin and history of this ani mal. Fourth, we come to the point where the history of the horse touches the history of man, and that was a turning point in the history of civilization, be cause, if you will reflect a moment, when man discovered the use of the horse, he discovered a mechanism which he could turn to his service in the same way as we use steam and electricity today. The horse became a means of civilization, of exploration and intercommunication. So, the history of the horse as a use ful animal to man comes in as the third or fourth topic. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Thoroughbred: His Breeding and Rearing In the Derby blind justice is personified in the winning post. The trial is severe, and there is neither fashion nor fancy in the result. This it is that gives to the English thoroughbred horse a value for racing pur poses unequalled - and looked for in vain - among auv other species of animal in creation, and I venture to hope that the racing authorities in Australia will fol low the example of England and make the Derby the greatest and most valuable race in Australia.
