Disease discussion is accompanied by approaches for treatment strategies, with disease areas discussed including cancer, neurodegenerative, age-related, mtDNA depletion, deletion, and point mutation diseases. Nucleosides supplementation, mitoTALENs, and mitoZNF nucleases are among the therapeutic approaches examined in-depth. With increasing funding for mtDNA studies, many clinicians and clinician scientists are turning their attention to mtDNA disease association. This book provides the tools and background knowledge required to perform new, impactful research in this exciting space, from distinguishing a haplogroup-defining variant or disease-related mutation to exploring emerging therapeutic pathways. Fully examines recent advances and technological innovations in the field, enabling new mtDNA studies, variant and mutation identification, pathogenic assessment, and therapies Disease discussion accompanied by diagnostic and therapeutic strategies currently implemented clinically Outlines and discusses essential research protocols and perspectives for young scientists to pick up Features an international team of authoritative contributors from basic biologists to clinician-scientists

Book Molecular Systematics of Plants

Download or read book Molecular Systematics of Plants written by Pamela S. Soltis and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The application of molecular techniques is rapidly transforming the study of plant systematics. The precision they offer enables researchers to classify plants that have not been subject to rigorous classification before and thus allows them to obtain a clearer picture of evolutionary relationships. Plant Molecular Systematics is arranged both conceptually and phylogenetically to accommodate the interests not only of general systematists, but also those of people interested in a particular plant family. The first part discusses molecular sequencing; the second reviews restriction site analysis and the sequencing of mitochondrial DNA. A third section details the analysis of ribosomal DNA and chloroplast DNA. The following section introduces model studies involving well-studied families such as the Onagraceae, Compositae and Leguminosae. The book concludes with a section addressing theoretical topics such as data analysis and the question of morphological vs. molecular data.

Book Organization and Expression of the Mitochondrial Genome in Cytoplasmic Revertants Ofcms S Maize

Download or read book Organization and Expression of the Mitochondrial Genome in Cytoplasmic Revertants Ofcms S Maize written by Carol Ann Leja and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The loss of $sigmaspprime$ and $psispprime$ termini of linear molecules was found to be a general characteristic of cytoplasmic reversion for all the nuclear-cytoplasmic genomic backgrounds examined in cms-S maize. Those cytoplasmic revertants that lose S1 and S2 lose $sigmaspprime$ and $psispprime$ termini by recombination with $sigma$ and $psi$ regions of the main mitochondrial genome to generate internal junction sequences of $sigma$-$sigmaspprime$, $psi$-$sigmaspprime$, $sigma$-$psispprime$, and $psi$-$psispprime$, thereby circularizing the mitochondrial genome. However, which internal junction sequences are generated appear to be influenced by the nuclear genotype. Cytoplasmic revertants that retain S1 and S2, namely those in the WF9 nuclear background, differ in the organization of their mitochondrial genome from those cytoplasmic revertants that lose S1 and S2. Although some data provide evidence for the loss of $sigmaspprime$ and $psispprime$ termini by recombination with $psi$ in these revertants, the continued presence of termini of linear molecules having $sigma$/$psi$ adjacent to a terminal S1/S2 and the presence of altered $sigmaspprime$/$psispprime$ termini suggest that circularization of the mitochondrial genome does not accompany cytoplasmic reversion in the WF9 nuclear background. Since S1 and S2 continue to be present after cytoplasmic reversion in the WF9 nuclear background, loss or mutation of $sigmaspprime$ and $psispprime$ termini and of $sigma$-R and $psi$-R junctions may be a way to stabilize the organization of the mitochondrial genome as linear molecules. The 2 kb sequence common to $sigmaspprime$ and $psispprime$ appears to result in the production of sterile-specific transcripts.

Book Genomics of Chloroplasts and Mitochondria

Download or read book Genomics of Chloroplasts and Mitochondria written by Ralph Bock and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-06-05 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past decade has witnessed an explosion of our knowledge on the structure, coding capacity and evolution of the genomes of the two DNA-containing cell organelles in plants: chloroplasts (plastids) and mitochondria. Comparative genomics analyses have provided new insights into the origin of organelles by endosymbioses and uncovered an enormous evolutionary dynamics of organellar genomes. In addition, they have greatly helped to clarify phylogenetic relationships, especially in algae and early land plants with limited morphological and anatomical diversity. This book, written by leading experts, summarizes our current knowledge about plastid and mitochondrial genomes in all major groups of algae and land plants. It also includes chapters on endosymbioses, plastid and mitochondrial mutants, gene expression profiling and methods for organelle transformation. The book is designed for students and researchers in plant molecular biology, taxonomy, biotechnology and evolutionary biology.
