Book Conflicted Power in Malawian Christianity

Download or read book Conflicted Power in Malawian Christianity written by Klaus Fiedler and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2015-12-01 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume constitutes Klaus Fiedlers crowning contribution to scholarship. Essays in the first half of the book focus on Malawian Christianity and how contrasting Powers, Gospel and Secular, engage each other, creating social, political and cultural conflict in the process. In the second half, Fiedler examines general missiological themes. These essays provide a broader missiological background, offering a theoretical framework necessary for appreciating the essays in the first half. He concludes with a chapter that reviews selected seminal books on themes under study. Throughout the volume Fiedler applies the restorationist revival theory he constructed in The Story of Faith Missions, an earlier 1994 work putting emphasis on non classical missions and churches, not systematically covered in earlier scholarship. This volume, the first of its kind on Malawian Christianity, will long remain an indispensable text for those interested in Missiology and Malawian Christianity.

Book God People and Power in Malawi

Download or read book God People and Power in Malawi written by Ross, Andrew C. and published by Luviri Press. This book was released on 2018-06-28 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1992 and 1994 Malawi underwent a remarkable transition from dictatorship to democracy. Truly a transformation of power! Yet this period of profound change raised many issues of power and accountability. In this book some of the key questions are explained and addressed from a theological perspective. The work originated as a case study on the World Council of Churches “Theology of Life” programme. It was then presented as a Kachere Monograph in the belief that it will not only contribute to the reconstruction of politic in Malawi but also be an important resource for all those concerned with the formation of a viable theology of power for today’s world. It is now presented here again as a Luviri Reprint. The contributors are all drawn from the University of Malawi Department of Theology and Religious Studies. Kenneth Ross has written on “The Transformation of Power in Malawi 1992-94: the Role of the Christian Churches” and “A Practical Theology of Power for the New Malawi”; Felix Chingota on “The Use of the Bible in Social Transformation”; Isabel Apawo Phiri on “Marching, Suspended and Stoned: Christian Women in Malawi 1995”; James Tengatenga on “Young People: Participation or Alienation? An Anglican Case”; J.C. Chankanza and Hilary Mijoga on “Muslim Perspectives on Power”; Hilary Mijoga on “Christian Experience in Malawi Prisons”; and Klaus Fiedler on “Power at the Receiving End: the Jehova’s Witnesses’ Experience in One-Party Malawi” and “Even in the Church the Exercise of Power is Accountable to God”.

Book excerpt: This is a historical excursus that describes female ministries in the early Church. It analyzes the disputed traces of women in the presbyteral ministry, diaconal ministry, and the differences in ordination rite and functions for deaconesses and deacons of the Byzantine Church. Information is included on the gender balance of today's identical ordination rite and functions of deaconesses and deacons. The study also examines: the hypothetical possibility of female presbyteral ordination; belief in female subordination; the spousal symbol; Mary; woman and person; reciprocity; the incarnation of the Word; the impossibility of female presbyteral vocation; the value of doctrines; and the sacramental sign and substance of a sacrament. In conclusion, a prayer for female presbyteral ordination is proposed. Download or read book Without Precedent written by Geoffrey Kirk and published by Wipf & Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though the ordination of women has been hotly debated in a number of churches (and in particular in the world-wide Anglican Communion) there has been a strange silence on the subject from academic theologians. ""They have left the debate,"" says the author of this book, ""for the most part, to the also-rans."" Without Precedent seeks to examine the arguments that, in the absence of serious academic contributions, have been advanced. In particular it looks at claims of ancient precedent for modern practice. What did Jesus think about women? Was Paul a misogynist or a feminist, a reactionary or a revolutionary? Does the role of Mary of Magdela, in scripture and tradition, offer any guidance (as many have claimed)? Were there female priests, and even bishops, in early Christianity? Extravagant claims have been made and repeated in all of these areas, and have crucially influenced decisions taken. This book provides, in the words of former Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams: ""a lucid and helpful survey, which quite rightly punctures some awful historical nonsense."" ""I read it with appreciation for its clarity and comprehensiveness. It is undoubtedly a lucid and helpful survey, which quite rightly punctures some awful historical nonsense."" --Rowan Williams, Master of Magdalen College Cambridge; former Archbishop of Canterbury ""This elegant survey will no doubt cause quite a stir, and rightly so."" --Aidan Nichols, OP, Lecturer in Theology, Blackfriars, Cambridge; author The Panther and the Hind ""Disagree though I may with Geoffrey Kirk's final position, I must strongly recommend this sparkling volume on women's ordination to the priesthood. Dr. Kirk skillfully engages the pertinent Scriptural texts and historical record, and witheringly exposes the largely flabby arguments still making the rounds in church debate. Along the way, he uncovers logical missteps and conceptual failures that have littered the discussion. This is a book that will make reflection wiser and more honest, and finally, one hopes, more faithful to the integrity of our Christian common life."" --Ephraim Radner, Professor of Historical Theology, Wycliffe College, Toronto Geoffrey Kirk read English Literature and theology at Oxford and was for many years National Secretary of Forward in Faith, a campaigning group in the Church of England opposed to the ordination of women. He was an Anglican parish priest and in 2004 entered the Catholic Church.

Book 55 Years of Struggle for Women s Ordination in the Catholic Church

Download or read book 55 Years of Struggle for Women s Ordination in the Catholic Church written by Ida Raming and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 55 years of struggle for women's ordination in the Roman Catholic Church - this lifelong effort by the theologian Ida Raming - together with her pioneering compatriots, some of whom have passed away - are described in this documentation. She is deeply convinced that a fundamental renewal of the church can only be achieved together with women who are no longer subject to discrimination - and not without them. Beginning with the Vatican Council (1962 - 1965), this endeavor has stretched across several phases of church history all the way into the present. Numerous documents bearing witness to internal church developments, conflicts and international movements are related in a vivid, gripping manner from the perspective of the author. The international Women Priests Movement (RCWP/ARCWP), its inception and development, is also described in this context. This documentation offers an excellent aid in studying the epoch of church history dating from 1962.

Book The Ordained Women Deacons of the Church s First Millennium

Download or read book The Ordained Women Deacons of the Church s First Millennium written by John Wijngaards and published by Hymns Ancient and Modern Ltd. This book was released on 2012-01-31 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A recent theological statement from the Roman Catholic Church has increased hopes that while women may not be ordained as priests, their ordination as deacons may soon become reality. This is a new, enlarged edition of a groundbreaking book that gathered historical evidence from ancient liturgies, literature, art and inscriptions on graves to show that the practice of ordaining women as deacons in the first ten centuries of the Church was normative. Women carried out sacramental rites alongside priests and had responsibilities for the care of the Christian community. Recent research has identified over 120 known female deacons - a figure that has tripled since this book's first appearance, under the title No Women in Holy Orders? in 2002. This offers a positive, theological and historical contribution to a debate that is fast gaining momentum in the Catholic Church worldwide. John Wijngaards is one of the most influential figures in the Roman Catholic church. He founded Housetop, which promotes the spirituality of John Main and has written many books on prayer and Bible study. Formerly Vicar General of the Mill Hill Fathers, he leads the movement for the ordination of women in the Catholic Church and runs the website: www.womenpriests.org
