  • Author : Madhavi Kale
  • Publisher : University of Pennsylvania Press

Download or read book Fragments of Empire written by Madhavi Kale and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2010-11-24 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Great Britain abolished slavery in 1833, sugar planters in the Caribbean found themselves facing the prospect of paying working wages to their former slaves. Cheaper labor existed elsewhere in the empire, however, and plantation owners, along with the home and colonial governments, quickly began importing the first of what would eventually be hundreds of thousands of indentured laborers from India. Madhavi Kale draws extensively on the archival materials from the period and argues that imperial administrators sanctioned and authorized distinctly biased accounts of postemancipation labor conditions and participated in devaluing and excluding alternative accounts of slavery. As she does this she highlights the ways in which historians, by relying on these biased sources, have perpetuated the acceptance of a privileged perspective on imperial British history.

Book Caribbean History

  • Author : Toni Martin
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2016-09-13
  • ISBN : 1315510111
  • Pages : 713 pages

Download or read book Caribbean History written by Toni Martin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-09-13 with total page 713 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More centrally focused on the Caribbean than any other survey of the region, Caribbean History examines a wide range of topics to give students a thorough understanding of the region's history. The text favors a traditional, largely chronological approach to the study of Caribbean history, however, because it is impossible to be entirely chronological in the complex agglomeration of often disparate historical experiences, some thematic chapters occupy the broadly chronological framework. The author creates a readable narrative for undergraduates that contains the most recent scholarship and pays particular attention to the U.S.-Caribbean connection to more fully relate to students.

  • Publisher : Rowman & Littlefield
  • Release : 2021-04-19
  • ISBN : 1793628424

Download or read book Resistance written by Shane Moran and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-04-19 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Resistance: Sol Plaatje and South Africa, Shane Moran studies Sol Plaatje, the founding secretary of what was to become the African National Congress (ANC), and his work within the context of colonial politics and resistance. Arguing for a return to the study of one of the founders of anti-racism, Moran explores issues of land reform, human rights, and the legacy of colonialism. Through an in-depth analysis of Plaatje’s resistance to racial domination, Moran examines the nature of the struggles that continue within and beyond South Africa today. In particular, Moran analyzes events from the beginning of the previous century that shaped post-1994 South Africa, such as the resolution of the ANC to expropriate land without compensation.

Book Ideology and Class Conflict in Jamaica

Download or read book Ideology and Class Conflict in Jamaica written by Abigail Bess Bakan and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1990 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abigail Bakan argues that there has been a recurrent ideological tradition of resistance to oppression among the black labouring classes in Jamaica. She reveals this pattern through analysis of three periods of mass resistance: the 1831 rebellion led by slaves, the revolt of 1865 in which former slaves demanded greater control over and entitlement to agricultural land, and the 1938 rebellion provoked by the Jamaican working class.
