Book Orchestral Masterpieces Under the Microscope

Download or read book Orchestral Masterpieces Under the Microscope written by Jonathan Del Mar and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2023-03-07 with total page 735 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A must-have for any conductor, conducting student and orchestral librarian. How does a conductor know whether the score they use is what the composer wrote? How do orchestral players know that their parts are reliable and reflect the latest scholarship? As Jonathan Del Mar reminds us in this ground-breaking book, editions of the orchestral repertoire are beset by textual problems: simple misprints, mistakes in the score or player's part, or hopelessly outdated scores at odds with current scholarship. Driven by a fundamental respect for what the composer actually wrote, Jonathan Del Mar addresses these problems through textual reports on over 100 orchestral masterpieces of classical music. Each report is introduced with essential guidance and succinct commentary on the first performance and publication of the work. Critical editions are compared with commonly used editions, and in those cases where no Urtext Edition exists, this much-needed reference work functions as a replacement for an Urtext Edition. Orchestral Masterpieces under the Microscope will be an indispensable reference tool for all who care about performances honouring the correct text that composers have left us. It serves as an essential survival guide for conductors and musicians to make informed choices, and it offers much-needed clarity on the latest scholarship for musicologists and music librarians alike

Book The Anchor Guide to Orchestral Masterpieces

Download or read book The Anchor Guide to Orchestral Masterpieces written by Melvin Berger and published by Anchor. This book was released on 1995 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An accomplished violinist, Berger has played in orchestras under many famous conductors, supplied program notes for concerts and recordings, taught at the City University of New York, and lectured widely. Intent on providing a guide that would help others enjoy orchestral music to the fullest, Berger (Guide to Choral Masterpieces, LJ 10/1/93) chose the entries by studying the programs of orchestral concerts and music radio stations, perusing CD catalogs, and seeking the opinions of various eminent musicians, as well as drawing from his own background in music. Each entry begins with a short sketch detailing the circumstances surrounding the creation of a composition; a brief analysis of its form and occasionally a delightful anecdote are also included. An appendage of "75 more masterpieces" generally given a sentence each seems like a tease. Perhaps Berger should think of doing a supplement that would give proper treatment to those additional works. Essentially an endeavor of personal taste, this guide may inspire readers to investigate similarly well-done works, such as D. Kern Holoman's Evenings with the Orchestra (Norton, 1992). Recommended as a succinct guide for academic and public libraries. Kathleen Sparkman, Baylor Univ., Waco, Tex. -- Library Journal.

Book Rodney Trudgeon s Concert Notes

Download or read book Rodney Trudgeon s Concert Notes written by Rodney Trudgeon and published by Jonathan Ball Publishers. This book was released on 2020-01-20 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rodney Trudgeon's Concert Notes is a collection of essays on famous classical, orchestral compositions. The pieces in this collection – short reflections on well-known classical compositions – have appeared in concert programmes that have accompanied performances by the Cape Town and Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestras. The author is a well-known radio host and presenter on Fine Music Radio. He is an expert on the range of musical genres that broadly fall under the category 'classical music'. The text that comprises Rodney Trudgeon's Concert Notes is structured alphabetically according to composer and gives a broad overview of the development of classical music, starting with the Baroque period and ending with modern, atonal music. Each piece is dedicated to a particular musical composition, describing its highlights, its history, and what makes it unique. Broadly, the pieces are grouped together according to the following three broad categories: ouvertures, concertos, and symphonies, mimicking the structure of concert programmes. Each entry also includes a short biography of its composer. Trudgeon's style is easy to read and accessible to all readers: from those who listen to classical music regularly to those who are unfamiliar with it. Overall, this collection is a useful and informative musical guide, making a case for listening to orchestral music.

Book The Choral Orchestral Works of Ralph Vaughan Williams

Download or read book The Choral Orchestral Works of Ralph Vaughan Williams written by Stephen Town and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-12-06 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Choral-Orchestral Works of Ralph Vaughan Williams: Autographs, Context, Discourse combines contextual knowledge, a musical commentary, an inventory of the holograph manuscripts, and a critical assessment of the opus to create substantial and meticulous examinations of Ralph Vaughan Williams’s choral-orchestral works. The contents include an equitable choice of pieces from the various stages in the life of the composer and an analysis of pieces from the various stages of Williams’s life. The earliest are taken from the pre-World War I years, when Vaughan Williams was constructing his identity as an academic and musician—Vexilla Regis (1894), Mass (1899), and A Sea Symphony (1910). The middle group are chosen from the interwar period—Sancta Civitas (1925), Benedicite (1929), Magnificat (1932), Five Tudor Portraits (1935), Dona nobis pacem (1936)—written after Vaughan Williams had found his mature voice. The last cluster—Thanksgiving for Victory (1944), Fantasia (Quasi Variazione) on the ‘Old 104’ Psalm Tune(1949), Sons of Light (1950), Hodie (1954), The Bridal Day/Epithalamion (1938/1957)—typify the works finished or revisited during the final years of the composer’s life, near the end of the Second World War and immediately before or after his second marriage (1953).
