It is unknown exactly when A Midsummer Night's Dream was written or first performed, but on the basis of topical references and an allusion to Edmund Spenser's Epithalamion, it is usually dated 1595 or early 1596. Some have theorised that the play might have been written for an aristocratic wedding (for example that of Elizabeth Carey, Lady Berkeley), while others suggest that it was written for the Queen to celebrate the feast day of St. John, but no evidence exists to support this theory. In any case, it would have been performed at The Theatre and, later, The Globe. Though it is not a translation or adaptation of an earlier work, various sources such as Ovid's Metamorphoses and Chaucer's "The Knight's Tale" served as inspiration. According to John Twyning, the play's plot of four lovers undergoing a trial in the woods was intended as a "riff" on Der Busant, a Middle High German poem. About the autor William Shakespeare was an English poet, playwright, and actor. He was born on 26 April 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon. His father was a successful local businessman and his mother was the daughter of a landowner. Shakespeare is widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist. He is often called England's national poet and nicknamed the Bard of Avon. He wrote about 38 plays, 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems, and a few other verses, of which the authorship of some is uncertain. At the age of 18, he married Anne Hathaway, with whom he had three children: Susanna and twins Hamnet and Judith. Sometime between 1585 and 1592, he began a successful career in London as an actor, writer, and part-owner of a playing company called the Lord Chamberlain's Men, later known as the King's Men. At age 49 (around 1613), he appears to have retired to Stratford, where he died three years later. Few records of Shakespeare's private life survive; this has stimulated considerable speculation about such matters as his physical appearance, his sexuality, his religious beliefs, and whether the works attributed to him were written by others. Shakespeare produced most of his known works between 1589 and 1613. His early plays were primarily comedies and histories and are regarded as some of the best work produced in these genres. Until about 1608, he wrote mainly tragedies, among them Hamlet, Othello, King Lear, and Macbeth, all considered to be among the finest works in the English language. In the last phase of his life, he wrote tragicomedies (also known as romances) and collaborated with other playwrights. Many of Shakespeare's plays were published in editions of varying quality and accuracy in his lifetime. However, in 1623, two fellow actors and friends of Shakespeare's, John Heminges and Henry Condell, published a more definitive text known as the First Folio, a posthumous collected edition of Shakespeare's dramatic works that included all but two of his plays. Duke Theseus, offer Hermia another solution to her dilemma, to live a life of chastity as a nun while worshipping the goddess Artemis. These four youngsters in love end in the part of the woods where Puck also known as Robin Goodfellow, a clever and mischievous elf who serves Oberon, the king of the fairy. Puck puts flower juice on Lysander, and then Demetrius eyes unintentionally causing both to love Helena. Meanwhile Oberon, who is having quarrel with his wife, Titania, uses the flower juice on her eyes. She falls in love with Bottom, who now, thanks to Puck, wears an ass's head. Titania engulf Bottom him with attention while she is in this state of devotion, Oberon having achieved his goals, Oberon releases Titania and orders Puck to take away the donkey's head from Bottom, and arranges everything so Helena, Hermia, Demetrius and Lysander will all be certain of they have been dreaming. Puck distracts Lysander and Demetrius from fighting each for Helena's love by imitating their voices and leading them apart. Finally, the four of them end separately falling asleep in the glade. Puck administers the love potion to Lysander restoring Lysander's love for Hermia again, now both Hernia and Helena are matched with the man they love, that way everything will be well in the morning. Duke Theseus and Queen Hippolyta arrive during the early morning hunt. They wake up the lovers and, since Demetrius no longer loves Hermia, Theseus overrules Egeus's demands and arranges a group wedding. The two couples join the royal couple in getting married, and Bottom rejoins his friends to perform the play and decides that he most have being dreaming and join his friends to perform the play.
