Book Exquisite Materials

Download or read book Exquisite Materials written by Abigail Joseph and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2019-11-08 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exquisite Materials explores the connections between gay subjects, material objects, and the social and aesthetic landscapes in which they circulated. Each of the book's four chapters takes up as a case study a figure or set of figures whose life and work dramatize different aspects of the unique queer relationship to materiality and style. These diverse episodes converge around the contention that paying attention to the multitudinous objects of the Victorian world-and to the social practices surrounding them-reveals the boundaries and influences of queer forms of identity and aesthetic sensibility that emerged in the mid-nineteenth century and have remained recognizable up to our own moment. In the cases that author Abigail Joseph examines, objects become unexpected sites of queer community and desire.

Book excerpt: Ron Austin first wandered purposefully into Mexico more than fifty years ago, when he produced a documentary on Mexican history for American television. Over the next decades, as his acquaintance with Mexico deepened, so too did his appreciation for the rich and contradictory impulses of Mexican culture and for the beauty of its people and their expressions of faith. At once guidebook, history, memoir, and tribute, Austin s Peregrino engagingly explores the spiritual and cultural heart of Catholic Mexico. Though once merely a tourist peering in a stranger to this distinctive faith and culture Austin, now a devout Catholic and part-year resident of Mexico, writes with respect, affection, and deep understanding as he invites fellow pilgrims peregrinos to regard both Mexico and their own cultures of faith in a new light.

Book Clothing and Fashion 4 volumes

Download or read book Clothing and Fashion 4 volumes written by José Blanco F. and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2015-11-23 with total page 1679 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique four-volume encyclopedia examines the historical significance of fashion trends, revealing the social and cultural connections of clothing from the precolonial times to the present day. This sweeping overview of fashion and apparel covers several centuries of American history as seen through the lens of the clothes we wear—from the Native American moccasin to Manolo Blahnik's contribution to stiletto heels. Through four detailed volumes, this work delves into what people wore in various periods in our country's past and why—from hand-crafted family garments in the 1600s, to the rough clothing of slaves, to the sophisticated textile designs of the 21st century. More than 100 fashion experts and clothing historians pay tribute to the most notable garments, accessories, and people comprising design and fashion. The four volumes contain more than 800 alphabetical entries, with each volume representing a different era. Content includes fascinating information such as that beginning in 1619 through 1654, every man in Virginia was required to plant a number of mulberry trees to support the silk industry in England; what is known about the clothing of enslaved African Americans; and that there were regulations placed on clothing design during World War II. The set also includes color inserts that better communicate the visual impact of clothing and fashion across eras.

Book Economic Management and French Business

Download or read book Economic Management and French Business written by M. Maclean and published by Springer. This book was released on 2002-10-02 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How is it that the modest pace of change which typified the French economy a century ago gave way after 1945 to a new, revived capitalism and a superior economic performance? Maclean traces the development of French economic and business life in the context of the European and international economy over the past fifty years. She examines the main economic trends and events: from nationalization to privatization; from war with Germany to reconciliation and ever-greater union; from the franc to the euro; and from national champions to mega-mergers with foreign companies. Maclean argues that the new French capitalism of the twenty-first century is the product of an ideological struggle in which the forces of modernization triumphed over the old guard of French nationalism.
