Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'They found the fifth girl right after the snow melted . . . the place where he left her was winter water, crazed with ice-feathers and dusted with snow. The traces from her body were gone, the ones that said his name, but she had an extra skin of ice that protected her and she looked perfect, like Snow White.' Ruby and her older sister, Jinn, are on their own, just about making ends meet. Jinn is beautiful, with glittering blonde hair, and makes it her business to look after Ruby. They are horrified by, but try to ignore, the local newspaper stories of prostitutes who are murdered, their bodies eventually discovered underwater. Then the no-good Nathan Baird turns up on the scene - again - and Jinn starts to change and no longer has time to look after Ruby. And it seems to Ruby that Jinn herself needs looking after. Her beautiful glittering hair starts to lose its shine. And then Jinn disappears. A deeply moving, chilling, and incredibly powerful thriller that celebrates the love two sisters have for each other and mourns the events beyond their control that will conspire to drive them apart.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In this highly readable and entertaining book, Jeanine Basinger shows how the "woman's film" of the 30s, 40s, and 50s sent a potent mixed message to millions of female moviegoers. At the same time that such films exhorted women to stick to their "proper" realm of men, marriage, and motherhood, they portrayed -- usually with relish -- strong women playing out liberating fantasies of power, romance, sexuality, luxury, even wickedness...Basinger examines dozens of films -- whether melodrama, screwball comedy, musical, film noir, western, or biopic to make a persuasive case that the woman's film was a rich, complicated, and subversive genre that recognized and addressed, if covertly, the problems of women." With carefully enunciated words that whipped across the room, his father spoke, the almost-a-whisper voice louder than any shout could have been. 'You're killing me, Aaron. You're killing me. I do my best for you. Mom does her best for you. And right now, I'm ashamed to say you're my son. You might as well put a bullet in my head, 'cause that's what you're doing.' The room was as silent as a morgue as John stormed out, leaving the door open. ... Hours later, Aaron stood there, staring at the computer screen. He stood there, staring at the floor. He stood there, staring at the gun. And it was all so clear. It was clear but white at the same time, as if in a sharp, brilliantly white haze. His father was dead.' His sudden death causes everyone he has known to question their role in this tragedy, none more so than his family, who know the secrets of his heart. Or do they? The family soon receives an intimate glimpse into the depths of a soul hidden from everyone. What will the Family Portraits reveal? Book Swifterbant S4 the Netherlands

Download or read book Swifterbant S4 the Netherlands written by D.C.M. Raemaekers and published by Barkhuis. This book was released on 2020-03-17 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication presents the results of the 2005-2007 excavations at Swifterbant S4, carried out by the Groningen Institute of Archaeology. S4 is a well-preserved Neolithic wetland site (c. 4300-4000 cal. BC) located within the Swifterbant river system in the Netherlands. We present the landscape setting, the various finds categories and the spatial patterns with three research themes in mind. Theme 1 concerns the environmental setting, subsistence and site function. We conclude that the Swifterbant hunter-gatherer-farmers exploited a mosaic-type landscape. Theme 2 deals with developments in site function during the occupation and exploitation history of the site. This analysis leads to the observation that episodes of cultivation and settlement alternated at S4. Theme 3, the use of space, was difficult to study due to the fragmented nature of the excavation plan. This site monograph makes Swifterbant S4 the most comprehensively published site of the Swifterbant river system.
