Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ophthalmic Record, Vol. 12: A Monthly Review of the Progress of Ophthalmology; January, 1903 The principle involved in the treatment, surgical or non-surgical, of any and all forms of heterophoria, is the elimination of x, which is the doing away with the necessity for any excitation of the basal, or involuntary, centers connected with the ocular muscles. In other words, the aim of all treatment is to so relate the muscles of any pair that the tonicity of the one shall equal the tonicity of the other. In such a state, since y always equals y, the formula, of necessity, would be a y b y, whatever may be the direction of the point of fixation. This book was released on 2019-02-13 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ophthalmic Record, Vol. 7: December, 1898 To see a thing you must get within seeing distance of it. A certain area cannot be perceived beyond a certain distance. The half-metre test types are very useful at the distance of a half metre or less, but they are of very little use at one metre, and quite worthless at two, four or six metres. In skiascopy there are movements of light and shadow in the pupil that can be seen at one-half metre, which are not to be seen at one metre or any greater distance and in many eyes it is these movements, and these alone, that truly indicate the refraction of the eye. This book was released on 2019-02-13 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ophthalmic Record, Vol. 4: December, 1894 When I came to Mexico first, twelve years ago, there were few Oculists, and I was, and am now, often called to adjoining cities and towns, where there are none; and as there' were a great many cataracts, especially among the poor, knowing it was the first, and probably the last opportunity many of these poor would have to receive sight, I operated and treated them as above described. I want to say that I make exceptions occasionally - in cases of feeble old people, when the patient is very nervous, afraid or unruly. And I want to say further, that I do not treat these people slightly. Fash ions, or what one Oculist does, may not be the best for another; and no one ought to venture, except those with experience, and then always remember so precious a thing as vision is at stake. Excuse me if I seem presumptuous when I say, in substantia tion of my preferred operation and treatment, that I am not a beginner, having operated upon eight cataracts in one day, and forty-seven in one month. This book was released on 2019-02-14 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ophthalmic Record, Vol. 12: A Monthly Review of the Progress of Ophthalmology; June, 1903 Burnett was the first to call attention to the peculiar and remark able appearance of the conjunctivae of the negro in this disease and so complete is his description that I cannot do better than to quote it verbatim: This consists in a brownish discoloration of the con junctiyal tissue, most intense at the scleral base of the mass, and gradually fading away toward the equator of the ball. This discolor ation. Which is undoubtedly situated in the conjunctival tissue itself, as well as in the epithelial layer, is not regular in its distribution but appears to consist of a collection of small deposits of brown pigment. These deposits are sometimes collected in rather large masses, particu larly near the base of the elevation, but towards the equator they appear as small, brownish Specks in the dull and succulent conjunctiva. In some instances this brownish discoloration extends but 3 mm. From the circum - corneal elevation, while in others it reaches almost to the canthus. It does not usually extend so far towards the equator of the globe in either superior or inferior direction. In one case I have seen the whole of the conjunctiva visible through the palpebral opening present this dirty, light-brown appearance in striking contrast to the brilliant, white aspect which the sclera usually presents in this race. In every case that I have seen in the negro I observed this condition. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2019-02-14 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ophthalmic Record, Vol. 2: December, 1892 Throughout the long controversy which has existed between the specialists and those in authority, the one question invariably put by the latter, has been, - point out cases which have been proved to be due to color blindness or defective sight? For a long time this question could not be answered, because sailors on colliding vessels are not required to have their eye-sight tested, but we fortunately can now point to three cases where color-blindness or defective-sight was the sole cause oi disaster.
