Download or read book The Civil War Seige of Jackson Mississippi written by Jim Woodrick and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2013-08-20 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even after a grueling forty-seven-day siege at Vicksburg, Ulysses S. Grant could not rest on his laurels. Just fifty miles away in Jackson, Confederate general Joseph E. Johnston and the "Army of Relief" still posed a threat to Grant's hard-won victory. General William Tecumseh Sherman countered by marching Union troops to Jackson. After a weeklong siege under a hot Mississippi sun, Johnston's army abandoned the city, leaving the fate of Jackson in the hands of Sherman's troops. Historian Jim Woodrick recounts the Civil War devastation and rebirth of Mississippi's capital.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Siege of Vicksburg: Climax of the Campaign to Open the Mississippi River, May 23–July 4, 1863, noted Civil War scholar Timothy B. Smith offers the first comprehensive account of the siege that split the Confederacy in two. While the siege is often given a chapter or two in larger campaign studies and portrayed as a foregone conclusion, The Siege of Vicksburg offers a new perspective and thus a fuller understanding of the larger Vicksburg Campaign. Smith takes full advantage of all the resources, both Union and Confederate—from official reports to soldiers’ diaries and letters to newspaper accounts—to offer in vivid detail a compelling narrative of the operations. The siege was unlike anything Grant’s Army of the Tennessee had attempted to this point and Smith helps the reader understand the complexity of the strategy and tactics, the brilliance of the engineers’ work, the grueling nature of the day-by-day participation, and the effect on all involved, from townspeople to the soldiers manning the fortifications. The Siege of Vicksburg portrays a high-stakes moment in the course of the Civil War because both sides understood what was at stake: the fate of the Mississippi River, the trans-Mississippi region, and perhaps the Confederacy itself. Smith’s detailed command-level analysis extends from army to corps, brigades, and regiments and offers fresh insights on where each side held an advantage. One key advantage was that the Federals had vast confidence in their commander while the Confederates showed no such assurance, whether it was Pemberton inside Vicksburg or Johnston outside. Smith offers an equally appealing and richly drawn look at the combat experiences of the soldiers in the trenches. He also tackles the many controversies surrounding the siege, including detailed accounts and analyses of Johnston’s efforts to lift the siege, and answers the questions of why Vicksburg fell and what were the ultimate consequences of Grant’s victory.

Download or read book Open Friendship in a Closed Society written by Peter Slade and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2009-10-09 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peter Slade examines Mission Mississippi's model of racial reconciliation (which stresses one-on-one, individual friendships among religious people of different races) and considers whether it can effectively address the issue of social justice. Slade argues that Mission Mississippi's goal of "changing Mississippi one relationship at a time" is both a pragmatic strategy and a theological statement of hope for social and economic change in Mississippi.

This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vicksburg and the Opening of the Mississippi River, 1862-63 These batteries were passed for the first time on June 28, when two sloops of war and six gunboats fought their way upriver. On that day, in an attempt to reduce the city by naval attack, Farragut blasted Vicksburg and its defenses with broadsides from his ships and a devastating fire from Cmdr. David D. Porter's mortar schooners. The attempt failed, mak ing it clear that a powerful land force would be required to capture Fortress Vicksburg. Only infantry had accompanied the expedition, and they were put to work with pick and shovel to dig a cutoff, southwest of the city, which might permit river traffic to bypass the Vicksburg guns. Book The Opening of the Mississippi a Struggle for Supremacy in the American Interior Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Opening of the Mississippi a Struggle for Supremacy in the American Interior Classic Reprint written by Frederic Austin Ogg and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 696 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Opening of the Mississippi a Struggle for Supremacy in the American Interior This book is intended primarily to be a history of the discovery, exploration, and contested rights of navigation of the Mississippi River prior to the final securing of American supremacy by the closing events of the War of 1812. As such, however, it inevitably appears here and there to have been broadened into an attempted history of the entire Mississippi Valley. The author disclaims any purpose to deal with so large a subject, except in so far as has seemed necessary in order to give his more restricted narrative its true setting. In writing the earlier history of the Mississippi an effort has been made to place due emphasis on two most important aspects of - it the diplomatic and what may perhaps be called the physiographic. Not until after the second American war for independence did the ownership and control of the Mississippi cease to be the subject of almost perennial diplomatic negotiation. The purchase of Louisiana, whose centenary is about being celebrated, was but an incident - a most important one, to be sure - of that prolonged negotiation. Four nations - Spain, France, England, and the United States - were from time to time involved in it, and no account of the development of the great Middle West is complete without a careful survey of its devious courses.
