Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Prophet Daniel: A Key to the Visions and Prophecies of the Book of Daniel The Book of Daniel with its great prophecies, both fulfilled and unfulfilled, is one of the most interesting portions of God's Holy Word. Before we follow this blessed book in a series of studies a few general remarks on Prophecy and its importance may be in order. Prophecy is history prewritten. The center of all Prophecy and the goal as well is the Lord Jesus Christ. His sufferings and His Glory, His two Comings, as Man of Sorrows to suffer and to die, as King of Glory to reign were beheld and written in advance by the holy men of God through the power of God's Spirit. The entire history of the chosen people Israel is written in the prophetic Word. All their sufferings and wanderings, what has befallen them in the past; their present lot, scattered among all the nations of the earth; what is yet to come upon them in tribulation and judgment, as well as blessing and peace, are found prewritten in the Bible. Book The Prophecies of Daniel and the Revelations of St John

This book was released on 2017-11-19 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Prophecies of Daniel and the Revelations of St. John: Viewed in Their Mutual Relation, With an Exposition of the Principal Passages However, the converse holds equally true, and is of even greater importance. The answer we give to the question of criticism depends on our general views of prophecy and escha tology. The real source, from which the present mode of treating Daniel and the Apocalypse Springs, is, that the critic is not in possession of the key, which opens a deeper understanding of prophecy, and, consequently, he divests the sacred books of everything which, in divine sublimity, transcends his own horizon, of the fulness of its superhuman contents, in order to bring it within the narrow circle of traditional or self-invented conceptions and presuppositions. As soon as dogmatic shall attain a clearer insight into eschatology, criticism will view the apocalyptic books of both Testaments in a different light. At present, they are misunderstood and divested of their real meaning and majesty, but then they will be exalted and seen in the dignity which they possess, and in the unique place which they occupy in the Holy Scriptures as revelations given by God to be a guide and light to His faithful people. We do not, however, blame in this instance Rationalism exclu sively. At an early period the Church began to see only indi stinctly the view which the Bible gives of the kingdom, and she lost it in proportion as she conformed to the world. The Reformation brought indeed truths of Scripture to light, which, if followed out consistently, furnish us with the key to prophecy; but the Reformation period did not proceed to this logical deduction. Of a theology, moreover, which has its vital roots in the world (1 John iv. And is akin to it according to its distinctive peculiarity, we cannot expect it otherwise, but that it will be perfectly incompetent to enter into the depth, and height, and breadth, of the divine plan of the kingdom. Such a theology finds it necessary to assume the ungenuineness of Daniel but let it not be denied or ignored, this necessity is not a historical, but a dogmatic one. Once adopt - this supposition of criticism, and you must of necessity adopt an exegesis, dilut ing the text and divesting it of all strength and meaning; the arbitrary and untenable character of which we shall endeavour to Show in our remarks on the second, seventh, and ninth chap ters of our prophet. The manner in which modern critics have treated this book, furnishes us with a striking specimen and il lustration of that unevangelical relation in which these theolo gians stand to Holy Scripture, and which we may regard as the very central seat of the disease of our Protestant theology Next to this, and in connection with it, we place the funda mental views of our dogmatic, which are formed from the cur rent opinions of the day: Starting from such principles, the books of Holy Scripture are subjected to criticism, and thus the critic proceeds, and only at this stage, to the exegesis of the text, and, of course, cannot and dare not, find in the word of God anything beyond what the dogmatics of our schools and criticism have left and apportioned to it. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Prophecies of Daniel The book of Daniel bears considerable resem blance to the Apocalypse by reason of the abun dant use of symbolism in both books; but the symbolism of Daniel is really history under a thin disguise, whereas the symbolism of the Apocalypse is pure symbolic representations in regard to the church, many of which still look to the future for their fulfillment. There is a certain connection between the two books; for the Apocalypse IS descriptive of the formation and growth of the New Church, 'while Daniel describes the con summation and judgment of the present Christian Church, and the consequent beginning of the New Church. Book Daniel s Great Prophecy

Download or read book Daniel s Great Prophecy written by Nathaniel West and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-18 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Daniel's Great Prophecy: The Eastern Question, the Kingdom The Book of Daniel was written to prefigure, in outline, the course of history from the Babylonian exile to the second coming of Christ, and to reveal the age of millennial glory "underneath all heavens," following that event. It, therefore, exhibits the character of our own times, as part of the "Times of the Gentiles," which is really the title of the whole book. As in the prophet's day so in ours the kingdom of God is in conflict with the kingdoms of the world; and, as in our Lord's day, is assaulted by all the forces of evil, the assailants seeking to snatch it away by violence. A contemplation of both civil and ecclesiastical events, during the past five years - not to speak of the whole century - only confirms the truth that the same policies that governed the empires and religious establishments of the ancient world, in their official life, and continuously since the introduction of Christianity, exist in our own day, and demonstrates the fact, made clear in Daniel's pages as elsewhere in both Testaments, that the World-Power remains essentially unchanged, notwithstanding its nominal profession of Christianity, and will do so till overthrown by the coming of the Son of Man. It was a consideration of the events current in our own day, and viewed in the light of the "sure word of prophecy," that induced the writer, though in the midst of much mental and physical suffering, to gather up some results of his past labors, and with the impressions received from recent events present them in a series of articles, to the editors of "Our Hope," who generously allowed space for their publication in the Monthly, devoted to the movement in behalf of Israel, not alone in New York, but in both hemispheres. CHAPTER XII The End of the Prophecy. The Great Tribulation and Israel's Deliverance. The Epilogue How closely this chapter is connected with the events, which we have just left in the closing verses of chapter xi. is seen by the first words with which the final chapter in Daniel starts in. "And at that time." What time? The time when the willful King domineers over the Jews and commits his evil deeds in Jerusalem and when the King of the North has entered the glorious land. The Time of Trouble and Israel's Deliverance. This is the subject of the first two verses. And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book. And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever (verses 1-3). Important prophetic truths are here brought into view. As stated above it relates altogether to the time of the end, the last 2>y2 years. The information is now given that this time will be for Daniel's people " a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time." And this statement is repeated by our Lord in Matthew xxiv. in that part of His Olivet discourse, which relates to the Jewish people and contains His prophecy touching the seventieth week. Then our Lord saith "then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to...

Download or read book The Book of the Prophet Daniel written by Otto Zockler and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-19 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of the Prophet Daniel: Theologically and Homiletically Expounded The peculiar literary traits and theological contents of this book, especially in its second or pi'ophetical part, likewise find their explanation in its origin among the scenes of the cap tivity. The prophecies of Daniel, conveyed generally in the form of dreams and visions, and nowhere enforced by inspired addresses or exhortations, and concerning themselves chiefly, ii not exclusively. With the fate of the all - controlling worlcl-power, on the one hand, and, on the other, with the final triumph of the Messianic kingdom of God, are thus distinguished from the earlier prophetical writings by peculiarities which mark the book as the pattern for the so called apocalyptic prophecies. In ordinary prophecies the people of God had usually occupied the foreground of vision, while the world-powers by which they were threatened, were only noticed incidentally, and made the objects of burdens or threatening prophecies, as iso lated representatives of the spirit that opposes God. Daniel on the contrary, takes his posi tion in the heart of that world-power, which had overthrown and subjugated all the nations of the East, and among them the chosen race. From this point of vision he foretells the rise of a new world-kingdom, which shall destroy the present empire, to be followed, in turn, by another and still greater power, and so on to the end, when an eternal kingdom of truth and righteousness shall be established on their ruins, by the direct interference of the God of heaven. The result of all earthly development, and the succession of judgments visited on the enemies of God's people, closing with the Messianic or general judgment, form the subject of this pro phecy; and the grandeur of its field of vision, compassing all history and embracing the world, together with the visional clothing of its teaching and the profound symbolism of its eschatological descriptions, constitute the features which stamp it as an apocalypse, in distinc tion from all earlier prophecy. Within the Old Testament, this form of prophetical writing is approached by the closing chapters of Ezekiel (xl. But it is directly represented only in the former half of Zechariah (chap. I. Where the model found in Daniel was probably copied. In the New Testament it is found, if we except certain brief sections in the Gospels and Pauline epistles (the eschatological discourse in Matt. Xxiv., mm, and parallel pas sages, and 2 Thess. 1l), only in the Revelation of St. John, which is a direct copy and con tinuation of the prophecies of Daniel.
