Book excerpt: Felix Lorenz traces the development of the doctrine of Laodiceanism in the Seventh-day Adventist Church through the writings of Ellen G. White and other historical documents. He shows how the church has risen or faltered spiritually according to whether it has accepted or ignored the Laodicean teaching and the concept of righteousness by faith. But even more, he brings the reader to the realization that each one of us must apply the implications of these teachings to his own personal life if the church is to accomplish its divine goal. Pastor H.M.S. Richards calls it "the most hopeful and stirring appeal for the reception and proclamation of the Lord's message to Laodicea that I have ever read or heard." Lorenz writes from many decades of research and teaching on this subject. He has served as a conference official and as a college and academy teacher.

Book Hallelujah Anyway

Download or read book Hallelujah Anyway written by Anne Lamott and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2017-04-04 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Anne Lamott is my Oprah.” —Chicago Tribune The New York Times bestseller from the author of Dusk, Night, Dawn, Almost Everything and Bird by Bird, a powerful exploration of mercy and how we can embrace it. "Mercy is radical kindness," Anne Lamott writes in her enthralling and heartening book, Hallelujah Anyway. It's the permission you give others—and yourself—to forgive a debt, to absolve the unabsolvable, to let go of the judgment and pain that make life so difficult. In Hallelujah Anyway: Rediscovering Mercy Lamott ventures to explore where to find meaning in life. We should begin, she suggests, by "facing a great big mess, especially the great big mess of ourselves." It's up to each of us to recognize the presence and importance of mercy everywhere—"within us and outside us, all around us"—and to use it to forge a deeper understanding of ourselves and more honest connections with each other. While that can be difficult to do, Lamott argues that it's crucial, as "kindness towards others, beginning with myself, buys us a shot at a warm and generous heart, the greatest prize of all." Full of Lamott’s trademark honesty, humor and forthrightness, Hallelujah Anyway is profound and caring, funny and wise—a hopeful book of hands-on spirituality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I met Miriam Kabliski Cohen quite by accident, and for me it was a life-changing event. My ninety-four-year-old widowed mother had recently moved into an assisted living facility in Venice, Florida, after my step-father died in 2009, and Miriam was her next-door neighbor. One day when I was visiting my mother, Miriam or Mira - as her friends and family called her - stopped by to visit. My first impression of her was of a small, white-haired lady, who walked with a slight stoop and had a foreign accent that I couldn't quite place. She appeared to be in her late seventies, and what surprised me the most as we started talking, was that she was quite computer literate. She had her own active Facebook page, Twitter account and kept in touch with her large family through e-mails. After Mira had left the apartment, I asked my mother to tell me more about her. She told me that Mira was Polish and had been sent to Auschwitz during WWII, but that's all she knew. Since I was quite interested in WWII history, especially The Holocaust, I asked my mother to call me the next time Mira stopped by, and I would like to hear more about her life. A couple of weeks later, my mother arranged a meeting in her apartment. I didn't know what to expect as I wasn't sure if Mira wanted to talk about her childhood experiences. Our meeting started out pleasantly, but soon it became apparent that whatever had happened many years ago was something that she didn't want to talk about. I changed the subject because I certainly didn't want to make her uncomfortable by asking her questions about her past. She asked me where I worked, and I told her I was an author and that I had written several books, including one about WWII. The more we talked, the more she opened up, until she told me that she wanted to go back to her apartment and get something to share with me. Within minutes, she returned with a well-worn leather satchel. Opening it, she started pulling out scraps of paper until there was quite a large pile on my mother's coffee table. When I asked her what were on the scraps of paper, she replied, "My story." As I picked them up and examined them, I noticed they were obviously written in a young person's handwriting, and were in a foreign language; Polish I correctly assumed. As I was going through the scraps, she reached into the satchel, pulled out a well-worn rag doll, and handed it to me. "Meet Alinka," she said. Alinka's clothes were tattered and dirty, her bisque head was crackled and chipped, and one of her arms was badly repaired. But, when Mira reached over, took her back, and hugged her tightly to her chest, I got a brief glimpse of an eight-year-old Polish girl sitting across from me. _____ Holocaust, Jewish, WWII, Polish, Auschwitz

Book Israel s Only Hope

  • Publisher : Carpenters Son Publishing
  • Release : 2015-04-01

Download or read book Israel s Only Hope written by John B. Metzger and published by Carpenters Son Publishing. This book was released on 2015-04-01 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are you looking for solid Bible Studies to add to your Messianic Jewish shelf or display in your Christian bookstore? Pastors and everyday Christians are looking to you for help in reaching out to their Jewish friends, family and acquaintances, and that s what they ll find in John B. Metzger s latest book in his series on Jewish Evangelism. This book is addressed mainly to believers who are concerned about their Jewish loved ones. Metzger brings up a good point: How does the New Covenant bring salvation? While indeed glorious, the Mosaic Law has never been able to save, regenerate, or fill mankind with God s Holy Spirit, yet God s plan to do so is interwoven throughout the Old and New Testament Scriptures. So how is God reaching out to Jewish people as well as all mankind? As Christians, we know that Jesus (Yeshua) initiated the New Covenant at the time of His death. Yet God first promised the New Covenant blessing to Israel in Jeremiah 31:31-34. He is still on track to fulfill His promise to Israel, as the Bible makes clear. God has promised to gloriously restore Israel as a nation with a new heart, but Israel has tied itself to a millstone called the Mosaic Law and banks everything on Law-keeping and the Abrahamic Covenant, which do not promise salvation. Israel s Only Hope lies entirely in Jeremiah s New Covenant. In this thoroughly researched study, John Metzger covers the following: (1) what the New Covenant is, and what it is not, as developed by the Prophets, (2) how the New Covenant is tied to Jewish people and Messiah s return, and (3) how the overflowing spiritual blessings of the New Covenant are available for whosoever believes in the sacrificial blood of Yeshua (Jesus) in the current Age of Grace. Detailed appendices include in-demand topics regarding the events of the end times based on Scripture and solid theology."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do some people find and sustain hope during difficult circumstances, while others do not? What can we learn from those who do, and how is their example applicable to our own lives? The Anatomy of Hope is a journey of inspiring discovery, spanning some thirty years of Dr. Jerome Groopman’s practice, during which he encountered many extraordinary people and sought to answer these questions. This profound exploration begins when Groopman was a medical student, ignorant of the vital role of hope in patients’ lives–and it culminates in his remarkable quest to delineate a biology of hope. With appreciation for the human elements and the science, Groopman explains how to distinguish true hope from false hope–and how to gain an honest understanding of the reach and limits of this essential emotion.
