Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea that the self is inextricably intertwined with the rest of the world—the “oneness hypothesis”—can be found in many of the world’s philosophical and religious traditions. Oneness provides ways to imagine and achieve a more expansive conception of the self as fundamentally connected with other people, creatures, and things. Such views present profound challenges to Western hyperindividualism and its excessive concern with self-interest and tendency toward self-centered behavior. This anthology presents a wide-ranging, interdisciplinary exploration of the nature and implications of the oneness hypothesis. While fundamentally inspired by East and South Asian traditions, in which such a view is often critical to their philosophical approach, this collection also draws upon religious studies, psychology, and Western philosophy, as well as sociology, evolutionary theory, and cognitive neuroscience. Contributors trace the oneness hypothesis through the works of East Asian and Western schools, including Confucianism, Mohism, Daoism, Buddhism, and Platonism and such thinkers as Zhuangzi, Kant, James, and Dewey. They intervene in debates over ethics, cultural difference, identity, group solidarity, and the positive and negative implications of metaphors of organic unity. Challenging dominant views that presume that the proper scope of the mind stops at the boundaries of skin and skull, The Oneness Hypothesis shows that a more relational conception of the self is not only consistent with contemporary science but has the potential to lead to greater happiness and well-being for both individuals and the larger wholes of which they are parts.

Book excerpt: At the center of a constellation of key ideas in East Asian philosophical traditions, there lies a conception of oneness among human beings. Human beings are intricately and inextricably intertwined and share a common destiny with other people, creatures, and things. The ramifications of this idea are wide-reaching, and resonate with important debates and concerns in contemporary Western philosophy, but many at the forefront of their fields in the West are unaware of the fundamental shift in perspective that might be available to them. One of Ivanhoe's aims in this work is to challenge the dominant paradigm of hyper-individualism, which still enjoys a commanding position in a great deal of contemporary theory and practice in the humanities and social sciences, and to describe and advocate for an alternative conception and sense of self, world, and the relationship between them. In particular, Ivanhoe, who has an extensive background in and has published influential work on virtue ethics and Asian philosophy, investigates the implications of oneness for conceptions of the self, virtue, and human happiness. Through the lens of oneness, he explores topics such as conceptions of the self, selfishness and self-centeredness, virtues, spontaneity, and happiness, drawing support from wide-ranging, interdisciplinary sources. Rather than starting from the standpoint of Western philosophy and then reaching out to Asian philosophy from a distance, Ivanhoe advances a thesis drawn from East Asian sources and explicitly challenges the theoretical asymmetry that is characteristic of most comparative study, which often simply applies Western theories to non-Western material.

Book Law of Oneness

Book excerpt: Law of Oneness is the program the ancients have intended for us to use for millennia. It’s a way of looking at reality to the way things work in our universe, not how things are played out on our current delusion. The ancients have wanted us all to unlock our potential to grow in consciousness. The Law of Oneness tells us how reality works in all our perception to recognize and break free from all our own potentials and activate our bliss to the reality of oneness. The one reality that has the power to undermine all other realities. From behind bars to beyond the stars — that's how far Jessy Salamone had to go in his personal growth and spiritual awakening to make the true nature of reality understandable for us all. With "Law of Oneness," which he started writing while serving time for drug-related offenses, Jessy succeeds in turning a complicated topic into a narrative that is reader-friendly and engaging. As he explains it, the Law of Oneness is "a universal formula or equation that works in all things and is the ultimate master key to take us to Source." The components of that formula include transcending society-programmed thinking, overcoming insecurities that cause low self-esteem, freeing ourselves from the limits of ego, finding the courage to go forward despite fear or disapproval, identifying our purpose in life, and recognizing that love is the glue holding everything together. Of course, there's much, much more in "Law of Oneness" to experience and enjoy. I recommend you give it a read. Under its influence, your friends, your family, and ultimately your higher self will thank you. -- David L. Gaskill, editor/reviewer

Book excerpt: In his previous metaphysical book, Trying to Remember, Dr. Thomas Paul Hansen explored this question and statement: Are you a spiritual being having a physical experience or a physical being having an occasional spiritual experience? Which one you believe makes all the difference in the world. In his new book, Remembering Our Oneness, learn how to live as the spiritual being that you are, even while experiencing this illusion of a physical universe. Learn how to be in this world, but not of this world. Learn how to co-create a world of peace that will help all of us awaken to our true Godself nature. We can take concrete action for peace in the world and at the same time remember that our true spiritual nature is already inside each one of us. Did we actually make this physical universe ourselves, with our minds? Why would we have done so? Find out why the old seeing is believing concept should be changed to believing is seeing.

Book Plato s Parmenides

    Book Details:
  • Author : Samuel Scolnicov
  • Publisher : Univ of California Press
  • Release : 2003-07-08
  • ISBN : 0520925114
  • Pages : 207 pages

Download or read book Plato s Parmenides written by Samuel Scolnicov and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2003-07-08 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of all Plato’s dialogues, the Parmenides is notoriously the most difficult to interpret. Scholars of all periods have disagreed about its aims and subject matter. The interpretations have ranged from reading the dialogue as an introduction to the whole of Platonic metaphysics to seeing it as a collection of sophisticated tricks, or even as an elaborate joke. This work presents an illuminating new translation of the dialogue together with an extensive introduction and running commentary, giving a unified explanation of the Parmenides and integrating it firmly within the context of Plato's metaphysics and methodology. Scolnicov shows that in the Parmenides Plato addresses the most serious challenge to his own philosophy: the monism of Parmenides and the Eleatics. In addition to providing a serious rebuttal to Parmenides, Plato here re-formulates his own theory of forms and participation, arguments that are central to the whole of Platonic thought, and provides these concepts with a rigorous logical and philosophical foundation. In Scolnicov's analysis, the Parmenides emerges as an extension of ideas from Plato's middle dialogues and as an opening to the later dialogues. Scolnicov’s analysis is crisp and lucid, offering a persuasive approach to a complicated dialogue. This translation follows the Greek closely, and the commentary affords the Greekless reader a clear understanding of how Scolnicov’s interpretation emerges from the text. This volume will provide a valuable introduction and framework for understanding a dialogue that continues to generate lively discussion today.

Book The Probability of God

Download or read book The Probability of God written by Dr. Stephen D. Unwin and published by Forum Books. This book was released on 2004-10-26 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does God exist? This is probably the most debated question in the history of mankind. Scholars, scientists, and philosophers have spent their lifetimes trying to prove or disprove the existence of God, only to have their theories crucified by other scholars, scientists, and philosophers. Where the debate breaks down is in the ambiguities and colloquialisms of language. But, by using a universal, unambiguous language—namely, mathematics—can this question finally be answered definitively? That’s what Dr. Stephen Unwin attempts to do in this riveting, accessible, and witty book, The Probability of God. At its core, this groundbreaking book reveals how a math equation developed more than 200 years ago by noted European philosopher Thomas Bayes can be used to calculate the probability that God exists. The equation itself is much more complicated than a simple coin toss (heads, He’s up there running the show; tails, He’s not). Yet Dr. Unwin writes with a clarity that makes his mathematical proof easy for even the nonmathematician to understand and a verve that makes his book a delight to read. Leading you carefully through each step in his argument, he demonstrates in the end that God does indeed exist. Whether you’re a devout believer and agree with Dr. Unwin’s proof or are unsure about all things divine, you will find this provocative book enlightening and engaging. “One of the most innovative works [in the science and religion movement] is The Probability of God...An entertaining exercise in thinking.”—Michael Shermer, Scientific American “Unwin’s book [is] peppered with wry, self-deprecating humor that makes the scientific discussions more accessible...Spiritually inspiring.”--Chicago Sun Times “A pleasantly breezy account of some complicated matters well worth learning about.”--Philadelphia Inquirer “One of the best things about the book is its humor.”--Cleveland Plain Dealer “In a book that is surprisingly lighthearted and funny, Unwin manages to pack in a lot of facts about science and philosophy.”--Salt Lake Tribune

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE ONENESS BOOK The most profound moments in human experience are those in which we feel a sense of being at one with the world. At such times we can experience a vastly expanded sense of identity, as if boundaries have fallen away, or alternately a beneficial sense of loss, as if the tiny ego we commonly identify with in day-to-day existence has been undermined, revealed as lacking in any substantiality. In the new perspective this experience brings, things that may have been a source of great worry before can suddenly seem of relatively minor importance or even drop away entirely, being unmasked as groundless fears. A deep sense of the rightness of existence, of a profound meaningfulness, can prevail. We approach life in its wholeness with a sense of reverence and innocent wonder. We live acceptingly within the present moment, from a profound and quietly blissful stillness, and meet all that comes our way with a loving and compassionate openness. Mystics and commentators from a variety of religious traditions have been the ones who have attempted to map such experiences most closely, although they are open to anyone, whether they have a religious belief or not. Furthermore, there are practical paths that can be taken to deliberately encourage such experiences to appear, and to stabilize them and integrate them into our day-to-day lives. This life-enhancing journey to an inner liberation can be taken by all, no matter where their starting point may be and no matter what beliefs about the world they hold. This book presents, in as straightforward a language as possible, information relevant to this extremely valuable undertaking of self-realization. Written in the belief that old truths need to be continually made accessible in new words in order to reach the greatest number of people, it outlines a path to self-knowledge drawing on readily-available tools of meditation and mindful self-inquiry, combined in a holistic manner. About the author: James Donaldson is the pen name of a British-born writer with strong ties to Asia. He has been exploring meditation for well over four decades, and has now chosen to share insights about his practice with those who might be able to gain benefit from them.

Book Oneness

Book excerpt: In February 1998, Rasha began a profound dialogue with the universal Presence, Oneness"-the Divinity we all share. As Oneness guided her step-by-step through the agonies and the exultation of an experiential voyage to God-realization, Rasha painstakingly documented the principles that lay the foundation for a new level of understanding of the phenomenon we call life." These pages hold belief-shattering insights into the changes that are silently shaking the fiber of our lives and our world. Here we learn how reality is manifested vibrationally, and how our emotional responses set the stage for drawing life experiences to us. We learn to recognize the signs and symptoms of the ascension process-the shifting of our awareness to accelerating levels of reality-and how to harness its potential. Filled with astounding metaphysical concepts and catalysts for change, Oneness speaks in a voice that is non-technical, and in the same breath, indescribably loving and personal. This book takes us to the outer reaches of our own humanness and to the depths of the Divinity within. Reading it becomes a sacred, experiential journey that leaves the reader empowered with timeless tools for real transformation and a clear roadmap of the inner path to enlightenment.
