Book excerpt: The M1 Garand gave the US infantryman a marked edge during World War II. It shot faster and further than enemy infantry rifles and hit harder. No less an authority on killing the enemy than General George S. Patton called the Garand, “The greatest battle implement ever devised.” At a time when opposing forces were armed with bolt-action rifles, US troops had a highly reliable self-loader. The eight-round clips which were used to load the M1 Garand were, however, viewed with mixed emotions by the troops on the ground. Some Army and Marine Corps troops allegedly felt that the distinctive “twang” as the Garand's clip was ejected when empty alerted the enemy that the soldiers were reloading and resulted in an attack. But the Garand became the defining mankiller of the war, despite its weight and magazine problems, and many US combat veterans consider it one of the key reasons they survived the war.

Book Globalization and Armed Conflict

Download or read book Globalization and Armed Conflict written by Gerald Schneider and published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. This book was released on 2003-06-11 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Globalization and Armed Conflict addresses one of the most important and controversial issues of our time: Does global economic integration foster or suppress violent disputes within and between states? Here, cutting-edge research by leading figures in international relations shows that expanding commercial ties between states pacifies some, but not necessarily all, political relationships. The authors demonstrate that the pacific effect of economic integration hinges on democratic structures, the size of the global system, the nature of the trade goods, and a reduced influence of the military on political decisions. In sum, this book demonstrates how important the still fragile "capitalist peace" is.

Book excerpt: THE MUST-READ AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF ONE OF BRITAIN'S BEST-LOVED BOXERS; NOW HITTING THE RING ON DANCING ON ICE 2024 On 24 November 2012, four-time World Champion boxer Ricky Hatton dropped to his knees, felled by a sickening punch to the body in his first comeback fight in almost three years. Ricky Hatton: War and Peace is the story of one of British boxing’s true icons. From a Manchester council estate to the bright lights of Las Vegas, Ricky Hatton experienced incredible highs in his career, including one of the greatest ever wins by a British boxer, over the IBF Light Welterweight champion Kostya Tszyu. But heavy defeats to two legends of the ring, Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao, brought him quickly down to earth to face a new set of battles against depression, drink and drugs. Written with his trademark honesty and wit, this is the inspiring story of a charismatic, funny, straight-talking fighter who boxing fans have always taken to their hearts; a man who has survived a lifetime of wars both in and out of the ring, and who only now is finding something close to peace.

The author, a military observer under Admiral Mountbatten, offers here impartial judgements and an objective narrative. He analyses the initial British failures, the straining of Anglo-American relations, the overcoming of military difficulties and the final victory of the combined British, Indian, American and Chinese forces. The book gives a clear and comprehensive look at the Burma war, puts it into perspective, and does not shy away from controversy over the management of the Allied campaign.

Book Circling Round Yoga Science War Cats

Download or read book Circling Round Yoga Science War Cats written by Arlene Corwin and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-12-26 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Circling Round Yoga, Science, War & Cats is a book of four poetry collections, each intended to express the universal; a unity in variety. Ms. Corwin: In Circling Round Yoga, Ive circled around varieties of yoga by including such subjects as recipes, thoughts about cooking, meditative reflections and recommendations, direct, unsystematic and definitely incomplete; recommendations for getting rid of loneliness: ideas that circle around the diverse paths of yoga. In Circling Round Science it was hard to draw a line between the intuitive, the spiritual, the philosophic and the scientific. Sometimes I feel like a combination charlatan-cum-dilettante with nothing to use but limited knowledge and intuition. I loved words like ionized, fractal, little green men from Mars, unified theory, red shift, continuumthey were oases of inspiration; an overlap of poetic speculations and quasi-science. War Book is self-explanatory. Its anti-. It may moan a bit. A killing phenomenon unjustifiable, despicable, one is impelled to say something. And finally Cat Book, a collection based on lovingly unsentimental observations of the only cats Ive known: Sootis and Albert, who were and are more than a mice eliminating part of my life.

Book The Falklands War

    Book Details:
  • Author : Gordon Ramsey
  • Publisher : After the Battle
  • Release : 2009-03-30
  • ISBN : 1399076302
  • Pages : 1786 pages

Download or read book The Falklands War written by Gordon Ramsey and published by After the Battle. This book was released on 2009-03-30 with total page 1786 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1982, Argentina rashly gambled that a full-scale invasion of the Falkland Islands — ownership of which had been disputed with Great Britain for over a century — would put an end to years of political wrangling. However Britain’s response was to immediately dispatch a task force to recover the islands, by force if necessary. The ‘conflict’ which followed (a formal declaration of war was never given) lasted ten weeks from Argentine invasion to British liberation, the white heat of battle using 20th century technology contrasting with bitter hand-to-hand bayonet fighting in inhospitable conditions. Eyewitness accounts by the participants of both sides, and islanders, leave us in no doubt as to the ferocity of the combat on land, sea, and in the air. Comparison photography in color of all the battlefields, the crash sites of the aircraft shot down, the relics and the remains, together with portraits of those who lost their lives and the battlefield memorials, serve as a graphic testimony to their endeavors, 25 years after the battle. A Roll of Honour lists the casualties of both sides and, for the first time, the graves of all the British fallen — both on the islands and in the United Kingdom — have been visited and photographed as a lasting record of all those who made the supreme sacrifice.
