Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A work of fantasy, I Who Have Never Known Men is the haunting and unforgettable account of a near future on a barren earth where women are kept in underground cages guarded by uniformed groups of men. It is narrated by the youngest of the women, the only one with no memory of what the world was like before the cages, who must teach herself, without books or sexual contact, the essential human emotions of longing, loving, learning, companionship, and dying. Part thriller, part mystery, I Who Have Never Known Men shows us the power of one person without memories to reinvent herself piece by piece, emotion by emotion, in the process teaching us much about what it means to be human.
Download or read book I Never Had It Made written by Jackie Robinson and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2013-03-19 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New York Times–bestselling autobiography of Jackie Robinson, barrier-breaking Brooklyn Dodger and civil rights legend: “An American classic.” —Entertainment Weekly Before Barry Bonds, before Reggie Jackson, before Hank Aaron, baseball's stars had one undeniable trait in common: they were all white. In 1947, Jackie Robinson broke that barrier, striking a crucial blow for racial equality and changing the world of sports forever. I Never Had It Made is Robinson's own candid, hard-hitting account of what it took to become the first black man in history to play in the major leagues. I Never Had It Made recalls Robinson’s early years and influences: his time at UCLA, where he became the school’s first four-letter athlete; his army stint during World War II, when he challenged Jim Crow laws and narrowly escaped court martial; his years of frustration, on and off the field, with the Negro Leagues; and finally that fateful day when Branch Rickey of the Brooklyn Dodgers proposed what became known as the “Noble Experiment”—Robinson would step up to bat to integrate and revolutionize baseball. More than a sports story, I Never Had It Made also reveals the highs and lows of Robinson’s life after baseball. He recounts his political aspirations and civil rights activism; his friendships with Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X, William Buckley, Jr., and Nelson Rockefeller; and his troubled relationship with his son, Jackie, Jr. It endures as an inspiring story of a man whose heroism extended well beyond the playing field. “Affecting and candid . . . I Never Had It Made offers compelling testimony about the realities of being Black in America from an author who long ago became more a monument than a man, and his memoir is an illuminating meditation on racism not only in the national pastime but in the nation itself.” —The New York Times “A disturbing and enlightening self-portrait by one of America’s genuine heroes.” —Publishers Weekly “An important book that should be widely read.” —The New York Times Book Review

Download or read book Everything About the Bible That You Never Had Time to Look Up written by W. Milton Timmons and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2003-02 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Visit the author's website at www.miltontimmons.com. Heretofore it has required years of study, access to many rare books, and superhuman effort to cut through the nearly impenetrable prose of these ancient books. Now all the hard work has been done for you in this easy to read summary. The project began during the course of collecting background material for a novel about the origins of Christianity when it soon became apparent that reliable information was very scarce. Perhaps half the books that shaped Western concepts of religion have ceased to exist. Many were destroyed as heretical after the early ecumenical councils closed the biblical canon in the fourth century; others have simply turned to dust. The oldest biblical manuscripts in existence are the Dead Sea Scrolls, which go back to approximately 100 B.C.E. And the oldest Christian manuscripts are those found in the Gnostic library of Nag Hammadi, in Egypt written in the fourth century C.E. But they don't contain any of the canonical books. All other information comes to us via copies of copies. Before invention of the printing press in 1450, all replication was by hand which allowed countless variations to creep into texts. Especially after translation into multiple languages, many stories evolved into a wide spectrum of versions. Which is the "true" version? It is impossible to say. The aim of this volume is to be concise rather than exhaustive thus making available to general readers the main sources of Judeo-Christian thought, without the distraction of scholarly disputes. For the benefit of those who may question the interpretation of certain documents, or who wish more information about original sources, a selected bibliography is included. It should be remembered that the books in this volume were written by very primitive people who were trying to make sense of the world with the only information they had. But even in those days, most of these authors were not considered educated by their Greek and Roman contemporaries. Moreover, the Jewish and Christian leaders who created the biblical canon rejected the majority of these documents as products of overheated imagination. So there are times when descriptions necessarily become a bit whimsical. Always, however, the goal has been to cover the author's main points while eliminating only the extraneous. Even though many of these books did not end up in any authorized Bible, they have nevertheless been extremely influential in the evolution of religious traditions. To this day, sermons, theological doctrines, and Sunday school lessons are still based on these extra-canonical sources: Where did medieval artists get the idea for all those paintings about the "Assumption of the Virgin"? There's nothing in the Bible about any such event. How do Catholics justify their doctrine that Mary remained a virgin all her life even though the Bible says Jesus had several brothers and sisters? Where did Dante Alighieri get his concepts about the levels of hell? Where did John Milton get the plot for his story about Lucifer the fallen angel? The documents contained in this book are where those ideas, and a myriad others, all came from.

Download or read book Never Had the Like Occurred written by John Tait and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-09-16 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Never Had the Like Occurred" examines Ancient Egypt's own multifaceted encounters with its past. As Egyptian culture constantly changed and evolved, this book follows a chronological arrangement, from early Egypt to the attitudes of the Coptic population in the Byzantine Period. Within this framework, it asks what access the Egyptians had to information about the past, whether deliberately or accidentally acquired; what use was made of the past; what were the Egyptians attitudes to the past; what sense of past time did the Egyptians have; and what kinds of reverence for the past did they entertain? This is the first book dedicated to the whole range of these themes. It provides an explanatory context for the numerous previous studies that have dealt with particular sets of evidence, particular periods, or particular issues. It provides a case study of how civilizations may view and utilize their past.

Download or read book What If the Bible Had Never Been Written written by D. James Kennedy and published by HarperChristian + ORM. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: But the Bible, more than any other book, is also the most maligned on the market. Many of the cities of our culture dismiss the Word of God. In What If the Bible Had Never Been Written?, D. James Kennedy and Jerry Newcombe show that this collection of books was indeed the inspiration for almost all of the great explorers, scientists, writers, artists, politicians, and educators the world has ever known. That such a book, which has influenced so many and stood the test of time for so long, is dismissed as folklore or myth, just goes to show what extremes nonbelievers will go to rationalize their behavior. From the Ten Commandments, which many of our laws and government are based upon, to the Golden Rule, a verse taken straight out of the New Testament, to many of today's most common phrases and expressions...there is no doubt as to the influence the Bible has on everyone, in some degree, every day. What If the Bible Had Never Been Written? provides a well-documented and in-depth look at the impact the Book of Books has had on humanity, pointing to specific areas in today's society that would not be as they are now, if it were not for the Bible.
