Every year hundreds of anniversaries still attract media attention and government investment in ever greater degrees. Deploying an astonishing array of insights, Celebrations explores the causes and consequences of this major phenomenon of our time. As Johnston shows, anniversaries fulfill a number of needs. They provide the kind of experience of regularity across a lifetime that the weekly cycle supplies in daily life. The use of anniversaries for political ends emerged during the French Revolution and expanded to promote nationalism during the nineteenth century, although there are differences in how they are used. Europeans tend to celebrate cultural heroes, while Americans tend to celebrate events. Entire nations exploit anniversaries of founding events in order to promote national identity. This narrative is historically driven, but relies upon an interdisciplinary approach to draw on the insights of ecclesiology, theology, liturgiology, church development, and especially music. This study utilizes a chronological and systematic approach to the relationship between music and the Church of God in the United States during the first 125 years of the denomination's history, from 1886 to 2011. For over a century, music has been an often-neglected dialogue partner at the table of academic discussion and this research argues for recognition and a proper place in Pentecostal history. Along with primary and secondary sources, the important element of "living archives" is investigated in this work; these are interviews with people who participated in historical music events in the Church of God. Why have some been more successful than others? To address these questions, Yitzhak Brudny traces the Russian nationalist movement from its origins within the Russian intellectual elite of the 1950s to its institutionalization in electoral alliances, parliamentary factions, and political movements of the early 1990s. Brudny argues that the rise of the Russian nationalist movement was a combined result of the reinvention of Russian national identity by a group of intellectuals, and the Communist Party's active support of this reinvention in order to gain greater political legitimacy. The author meticulously reconstructs the development of the Russian nationalist thought from Khrushchev to Yeltsin, as well as the nature of the Communist Party response to Russian nationalist ideas. Through analysis of major Russian literary, political, and historical writings, the recently-published memoirs of the Russian nationalist intellectuals and Communist Party officials, and documents discovered in the Communist Party archives, Brudny sheds new light on social, intellectual, and political origins of Russian nationalism, and emphasizes the importance of ideas in explaining the fate of the Russian nationalist movement during late communist and early post-communist periods. But first it came to anchor off the island of Colonsay and took aboard 115 Gaelic speaking emigrants and their baggage. They were going to Prince Edward Island where Lord Selkirk had promised them land to be bought outright or on contract. The passengers were related in some way to two family heads named McNeill and McMillan. For example 20 year old James Munn had just married Elizabeth McMillan and their siblings James McMillan and Ann Munn would be married as soon as they reached PEI. Why these couples and their other family members wanted to leave Colonsay is the story told here. Events of Scottish history may have made it necessary to emigrate at that time and we speculate as to how it was financially possible. The McMillans and the Munns would fit with prior Selkirk Settlers by taking up property as neighbors in Belle River and Wood Islands where they would raise double cousin children, start a school, start a church and begin businesses and farms. Eventually, after two generations at Belle River, circumstances urged grandson James H. Munn to migrant to western Canada and on to the Washington Territory where homestead land was available to hardened pioneers. The story is only one many that track the western migration from Europe to the Americas.
