Book The Olympic Winter Games Foundation and Evolution

Download or read book The Olympic Winter Games Foundation and Evolution written by Annette R. Hofmann and published by . This book was released on 2024 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1924 the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has held the Olympic Winter Games, which are smaller in size than the Summer Games. Usually around 3,000 athletes participate. With the exception of Sapporo in 1972 and Nagano in 1998 the Winter Olympics were predominantly organised in European countries and occasionally in North America. Only since the XXII Olympic Winter Games 2014, have Russia and Asian countries also provided host cities. Whereas at the first Olympic Winter Games five percent of the participating athletes were women, the number has risen over the decades to 45 percent at the last Winter Games in Beijing in 2022. It was a long and not always easy journey for female athletes to gain both entrance and acceptance, as will be shown in chosen cases. The article provides an overview on the foundation, development, changes and major challenges of the Olympic Winter Games as well as the addition of new disciplines. Baron Pierre de Coubertin`s initial resistance and the IOC`s biased position on their implementation are mentioned. Later IOC presidents as well were not always approbative. One reason was the amateur controversy. Since amateurism was one of the main Olympic ideals until the 1980s, the IOC considered it to be threatened, especially due to the commercialisation of skiing and of other winter sports. Each of the twenty-four Olympic Winter Games that have been held until today has its individual history, scandals and highlights in sport but also connected to a number of national and international issues that were not always related only to sports. It is not possible to go into detail of each of the Games; thus, in the following an overview on the Winter Olympics shall be given with chosen examples.

Book The Evolution of the Olympic Games

Download or read book The Evolution of the Olympic Games written by F. A. M. Webster and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evolution of the Olympic Games: 1829 B. C. 1914 A. D IT is only since our dismal failure at Stockholm in 1912 that the Modern Olympic Games have aroused any vital interest in the mind of the man in the street, and even then it has been a mere passing feeling of shame that we should fall so low as to be beaten by even the lesser European nations, who for generations past have been our pupils 1n all sporting pastimes. Moreover, the judgment of the public has been passed upon the Olympic Games without a real knowledge of the ancient festivals, their purpose and practice, or why they have been revived in modern times. Through the genius and tactful care of Baron Pierre de Coubertin, and after years of careful research, the Modern Olympic Games are at' last reaching a pitch of perfection which will still more nearly approach its consummation after the International Congress held in Paris this year to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the foundation of the Olympic movement. At the Congress it is hoped to arrive at an amateur definition which will be acceptable to all nations this should do much to clear away that which has been a source of some slight bitterness of feeling in the past. My desire, in offering this book to the public, is that abetter understanding of the Olympic movement may e acquired and a greater interest in athletics generated in the minds of the rising generation. Much misconception and many unfair hits have done much to retard a movement from which surely nothing but good can accrue, for the healthy cult of athletics is bound to raise the physical standard of the young manhood of the world, with all its attendant virtues of mind and body control engendered by the discipline of training. These great quadrennial meetings must also lead to a better under standing by the youths of the nations of each other's virtues, short comings, and limitations; and this in itself is good. For it must not be forgotten that these Games are not confined to one class, but are participated in by university students of all nations, who, in due course, will fill responsible posts in the councils and govern ments of their various countries. Surely the knowledge they have then gained of each other at the Olympic Games will enable them' to view each other's actions in international politics with tolerance, and with the understanding born of a clearer knowledge of the national peculiarities which have inspired the action. Book excerpt: On 6 July 2007 in Guatemala, the International Olympic Committee (IOC)'s members approved the proposal put forth by its then President, Jacques Rogge, to create what would be known as the Youth Olympic Games (YOG), in both a summer and winter format. Created to address the decline in physical activity and increased obesity that President Rogge had observed among young people, the YOG were to meet eight different objectives, be a multi-sport event of moderate size - scheduled over 12 days for the Summer YOG and 10 days for the Winter YOG - and have the young athletes stay for the whole period. The YOG editions would alternate every two years between the summer and winter editions, and young athletes aged 15 to 18 in the year the event was to be hosted would qualify to participate based on International Sports Federation qualifications. Moreover, a cultural and educational programme was created, in which the athletes would participate in addition to their sports competitions. Finally, the IOC's vision for the YOG was to see the young athletes become Young Olympians and promote the Olympic values and Olympism once they returned to their communities. This chapter examines the YOG's initial concept and evolution, and presents the event's key outcomes, impacts, and legacies. Throughout, the chapter highlights the sporting, learning, and operational innovations seen in the YOG, which have become a testing ground for the Olympic Summer and Winter Games. For instance, though still focused on young athletes aged 15 to 18, the YOG now see the young athletes stay in two waves. The IOC has refined its vision for the event and reduced the objectives to four. Finally, the YOG concept has evolved to "Compete, Learn & Share."

Book The Youth Olympic Games

Download or read book The Youth Olympic Games written by Dag Vidar Hanstad and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-05 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first summer Youth Olympic Games (YOG) were held in Singapore in 2010 and the first winter Youth Olympic Games in Innsbruck in 2012. The IOC hopes that the YOG will encourage young people to be more active and that they will bring the Olympic movement closer to its original founding values. This is the first book to be published on the Youth Olympic Games. It critically examines the origins of the Games and the motives of the Games organisers, as well as the organisation and management of the Games and their wider impact and significance. The first part of the book discusses the relationship between the YOG and the ideology of Olympism, in the context of broader developments in youth sport competitions. The second part investigates a wide range of managerial aspects including the bidding process, finance, the prominent role of young people on the organising committees and as volunteers, the role of media and sponsors, and the distinctive competition structure. The final part of the book assesses the current and likely future impact of the YOG on the host cities and countries, the IOC and on national youth sport policies. The Youth Olympic Games is essential reading for any researcher, advanced student or policy maker with an interest in Olympic Studies, sports development, sport policy, youth sport or event management.

Book Recent Evolutions and Perspectives in Olympic Winter Sports Performance to PyeongChang and Beyond

This book was released on 2019-07-19 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An evidence-based scientific understanding of factors determining Olympic winter sports performance, recent changes, the evolution in training content and methods, the improvement in technology as well as the occurrence of injury and illness is required. On one hand, this would provide the opportunity to translate research to practice. On the other hand, to guide the practice of Olympic winter sports with the ultimate goal of improving the performance. Certainly, the continued evolution of Olympic winter sports has contributed to an enormous accumulation of knowledge, evidence, and relevant training technologies. Sports sciences, including physiology, conditioning, nutrition, biomechanics, coaching, psychology, as well as sport technology, history and social sciences, have much to contribute to the preparation of the athletes in the Olympic winter sports. Consequently, this Research Topic sought to provide a platform of contributions to set out a comprehensive framework of the components that should be addressed when developing training plans leading to elite Olympic winter sports performance. Overall, the papers were all directed toward a better understanding of physiological, biomechanical, and training factors related to different Olympic winter sports disciplines: cross-country skiing, alpine skiing, biathlon, Nordic combined, speed skating, snowboarding, and ski-cross.

Book From Olympic Administration to Olympic Governance

Download or read book From Olympic Administration to Olympic Governance written by Emmanuel Bayle and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-02 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lausanne, the Swiss city IOC (International Olympic Committee) President Juan Antonio Samaranch honored with the title "Olympic capital" in 1994, is now the administrative capital of world sport. The past century has presented Olympism with many challenges and that continues to be the case today; the issues may have changed, but they are no less numerous. Controversies over phony amateurism, the two Chinas and the creation of a modern Olympia have been resolved, only to be replaced by questions of governance, compliance, strategy, responsible management, the size of the Games, the scarcity of bids and new forms of doping and corruption. All these themes are examined in the articles that make up this book published about 100 years after the establishment of the IOC’s headquarters in Lausanne. This book was originally published as a special edition of Sport in Society.

Book Twenty two Olympic Winters

Download or read book Twenty two Olympic Winters written by Pirkko Markula and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This chapter focuses on the mediatization processes of the Olympic Winter Games by considering first, the historical development in "making" the Games through the integration and evolution of television production techniques and second, by following the trends of representing the Olympic Winter Games in broadcast productions. Through these major themes, it discusses the intertwined impact of the social processes of commercialization, globalization, urbanization, and mediatization on the Games. The framework of mediatization illustrates how the media have become inter-twined with and influence social institutions such as sport. Continually evolving through contradictory circumstances, incidents, and needs, mediatization intertwines the history of television broadcasting and the development of the Winter Olympic Games. The era of digitalization is characterized by the invention of social media through which individual users are free to post information on the World Wide Web. The digital technology has been deeper integrated within everyday lives to further enhance the individualized spectator experience.
