Book Civilization Before Greece and Rome

Download or read book Civilization Before Greece and Rome written by H. W. F. Saggs and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many centuries it was accepted that civilization began with the Greeks and Romans. During the last two hundred years, however, archaeological discoveries in Egypt, Mesopotamia, Crete, Syria, Anatolia, Iran, and the Indus Valley have revealed that rich cultures existed in these regions some two thousand years before the Greco-Roman era. In this fascinating work, H.W.F Saggs presents a wide-ranging survey of the more notable achievements of these societies, showing how much the ancient peoples of the Near and Middle East have influenced the patterns of our daily lives. Saggs discussesthe the invention of writing, tracing it from the earliest pictograms (designed for account-keeping) to the Phoenician alphabet, the source of the Greek and all European alphabets. He investigates teh curricula, teaching methods, and values of the schools from which scribes graduated. Analyzing the provisions of some of the law codes, he illustrates the operation of international law and the international trade that it made possible. Saggs highlights the creative ways that these ancient peoples used their natural resources, describing the vast works in stone created by the Egyptians, the development of technology in bronze and iron, and the introduction of useful plants into regions outside their natural habitat. In chapters on mathematics, astronomy, and medicine, he offers interesting explanations about how modern calculations of time derive from the ancient world, how the Egyptians practiced scientific surgery, and how the Babylonians used algebra. The book concludes with a discussion of ancient religion, showing its evolution from the most primitive forms toward monotheism.

Book The Oldest Civilization of Greece Studies of the Mycenaean Age

Download or read book The Oldest Civilization of Greece Studies of the Mycenaean Age written by H. R. Hall and published by . This book was released on 2015-11-26 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: H.R. Hall was an early 20th century historian who wrote at length about ancient Greece in a number of highly regarded histories, including this one. From the preface: "The series of "Studies of the Mycenan Age" which are comprised in this volume contain the notes made during the course of some years' study of the "Mycenan Question," expanded and thrown into a connected form. The chief problems of "Mycenan" archology are dealt with separately, but at the same time are also, as far as possible, connected in order to form a homogeneous study of the Mycenan Question as it stands to-day. Here and there it has been found impossible, when discussing some one problem, to steer clear of trenching upon the domain of another; repetition of argument has, however, been as far as possible avoided, and it is hoped that these chapters will be of use both to the scientific archological student and to the layman who interests himself in the most fascinating search which ever yet allured the seeker after forgotten history-the search for the origins of Greek civilization.

Book Roots of Ancient Greek Civilization

Download or read book Roots of Ancient Greek Civilization written by Harald Haarmann and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-09-04 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contrary to a prevalent belief of the Western world, that democracy, agriculture, theater and the arts were the attainments of Classical Greek civilization, these were actually a Bronze Age fusion of earlier European concepts and Hellenic ingenuity. This work considers both the multicultural wellspring from which these ideas flowed and their ready assimilation by the Greeks, who embraced these hallmarks of civilization, and refined them to the level of sophistication that defines classical antiquity.

Book excerpt: From Archaic times to the reign of Alexander the Great, Greek unity was tenuous, yet Ancient Greece was a place where culture flourished and intellectual achievement knew no bounds. Ancient Greek ideas on philosophy, politics, science, and the arts anticipate many of our own, and in some ways, remain unparalleled today. This book recounts the events that were instrumental to the development of this storied civilization and the indelible legacies it has left behind. A detailed appendix supplements the narrative with in-depth discussion on the Pre-Greek societies that fueled the imagination and gave birth to an enduring body of Greek mythology.

This book was released on 2014-06-16 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Wonderful…a thoughtful discussion of what made [the Greeks] so important, in their own time and in ours." —Natalie Haynes, Independent The ancient Greeks invented democracy, theater, rational science, and philosophy. They built the Parthenon and the Library of Alexandria. Yet this accomplished people never formed a single unified social or political identity. In Introducing the Ancient Greeks, acclaimed classics scholar Edith Hall offers a bold synthesis of the full 2,000 years of Hellenic history to show how the ancient Greeks were the right people, at the right time, to take up the baton of human progress. Hall portrays a uniquely rebellious, inquisitive, individualistic people whose ideas and creations continue to enthrall thinkers centuries after the Greek world was conquered by Rome. These are the Greeks as you’ve never seen them before.
