Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old Venetian Palaces and Old Venetian Folk If there is one experience more delightful than a first visit to Venice, it is a second; the urgent pre-occupation of the nuovo peregrin to pretermit nothing of importance amid the wealth of beauty and historic interest offered to his gaze, gives place to a calmer enjoyment; objects fall into their due perspective; ideal preconceptions are corrected, and the sojourner may turn to the study and appreciation of some particular phase of the manifold attractions of the city: to such returning lovers the ensuing pages are directed. This slight and necessarily imperfect sketch of the palaces of Venice has grown from a pilgrimage made about the mazy streets and intricate canals of the city for the purpose of identifying, and precisely indicating the position of the various remains of domestic architecture referred to and illustrated in the works of Ruskin, Street, and Fergusson; in those of "that blessed man called Cicognara," and his colleagues Diedo and Selva; in the admirable volumes of the later and no less important authority, Prof. Pietro Paoletti, and other writers on the subject. The chief existing examples of old palatial architecture are described, so far as possible, in the order of their erection, and grouped into the three main divisions - Byzantine, Gothic, and Renaissance - of their style. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Venice as Seen and Described by Famous Writers This book consists of a collection of impressions, essays and criticisms by sympathetic travellers, historians and artist, gathered together to give a general impression of the half-submerged "Queen of the Adriatic." We are prepared for the peculiar charm of the fantastic floating city of dreams by the peculiar charm of the fantastic floating city of dreams by Dickens's prose-poem which shows the spirit with which Venice should be visited and studied; for the Venice of to-day, with her fallen Campanile, her filled-up canals, and her picturesque and individuals phases of the city are presented. The historical articles by Grant Allen on the Origins of Venice and by Ruskin on Torcello, which open and close the book, emphasize the antiquity of the "City of the Lagoons" and her simple beginnings. The growth of the Republic is clearly set forth by Green, and her power and magnificence are described in the course of various essays, notably those on The Doge and The Arsenal. The first two historical articles prepare us for our trip through Venice, before taking which, Ruskin gives a general view of the ocean-city, "set like a golden clasp on the griddle of the earth," reflecting its marble palaces upon that "green pavement" which every breeze breaks "into new fantasies of rich tesselation," or standing at ebb-tide upon its flat plain of dark green seaweed.
