Book The Old The Mad and the Wobbly

Download or read book The Old The Mad and the Wobbly written by Heather Cook and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2015-11-28 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A kitten is a kitten, but each mature cat is unique. Shaped by experience - good and bad - cats are survivors, whether they have wrestled with the dark forces of nature or nothing more demanding than securing the most comfortable billet on the sofa. Older cats are not afraid to be themselves – not that there’s ever any real danger of cats worrying what anybody thinks. Mature cats have had years to grow into their ears and even if their ears don’t hear too well, those cats still have plenty to say. Author Heather Cook spent 30 years as the homing officer for Woking Branch of Cats Protection and this has afforded her an endless supply of cats that could variously be described as “past their sell-by date”, “off-the-wall” or “damaged”. This book documents the special felines who have taken up residence at her home (Tresta Towers). “Some of these have presented me with significant challenges, but there is no such thing as a bad cat. I believe that animals react to outside stimuli, favourable or unfavourable, in order to survive,” says Heather. Madness happens: in cats as in people. It can take the form of harmless eccentricity, dementia or out and out psychosis. In cats it can be a rather attractive quality, only necessitating the wearing of protective clothing in extreme cases. Think of kittens racing round a room at head height, their tails like loo brushes and their ears like helicopter blades. They start off bonkers and it can only get worse. Some cats are born wobbly, some achieve wobbliness and some have wobbliness thrust upon them, by illness or accident. If you love cats, you will love this book. The cats featured are very special and have overcome any number of problems to survive. This is not a dreary book, however, as cats are by nature humorous creatures and there are many amusing incidents along the way. All the stories are true and all the cats are very real indeed.

Book No One Said It Would Be Easy

Download or read book No One Said It Would Be Easy written by Des Molloy and published by . This book was released on 2019-09-17 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An outrageous sortie on a pre-war BSA and two obscure, obsolete Yorkshire-made, single-cylinder Panther motorbikes. Poorly funded, with little planning, the ride depends on good luck, blind loyalty and terminal optimism. The struggle is managed with a youthful naivety. This is a recollection of a youth well-spent. Love and adventure are in the air with every chapter a precarious adventure. "I was parched and scarcely able to breathe but I pushed and shoved and swore, screamed, yelled and cried and somehow I got Penelope up that bloody hill and struggled on until I could see the brick outpost over a sand dune. In the last 20 yards I bogged down again, and so leaving Penelope upright in the sand I staggered in, to the amazement of the soldiers. I beg for water"

Book excerpt: Author, activist, and TED speaker Ashton Applewhite has written a rousing manifesto calling for an end to discrimination and prejudice on the basis of age. In our youth obsessed culture, we’re bombarded by media images and messages about the despairs and declines of our later years. Beauty and pharmaceutical companies work overtime to convince people to purchase products that will retain their youthful appearance and vitality. Wrinkles are embarrassing. Gray hair should be colored and bald heads covered with implants. Older minds and bodies are too frail to keep up with the pace of the modern working world and olders should just step aside for the new generation. Ashton Applewhite once held these beliefs too until she realized where this prejudice comes from and the damage it does. Lively, funny, and deeply researched, This Chair Rocks traces her journey from apprehensive boomer to pro-aging radical, and in the process debunks myth after myth about late life. Explaining the roots of ageism in history and how it divides and debases, Applewhite examines how ageist stereotypes cripple the way our brains and bodies function, looks at ageism in the workplace and the bedroom, exposes the cost of the all-American myth of independence, critiques the portrayal of elders as burdens to society, describes what an all-age-friendly world would look like, and offers a rousing call to action. It’s time to create a world of age equality by making discrimination on the basis of age as unacceptable as any other kind of bias. Whether you’re older or hoping to get there, this book will shake you by the shoulders, cheer you up, make you mad, and change the way you see the rest of your life. Age pride! “Wow. This book totally rocks. It arrived on a day when I was in deep confusion and sadness about my age. Everything about it, from my invisibility to my neck. Within four or five wise, passionate pages, I had found insight, illumination, and inspiration. I never use the word empower, but this book has empowered me.” —Anne Lamott, New York Times bestselling author

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although breakups—whether celebrity or everyday—are a constant source of fascination, surprisingly little attention has been given to women who are cut loose in their later years. This is a book about (mostly) long-term relationships that have come apart. Each woman involved, the majority of whom are over sixty, tells of her experience through journal entries, essays, poetry, or stories. Although in many senses they have been abandoned, they have also been set free, untethered, and, for some, liberated sexually, mentally, or emotionally. The book is divided into two major sections. The pieces in the first part are personal narratives. Among the varied voices, we hear from women in both heterosexual and same-sex relationships who have been left by their partners or who have decided to leave them. In the second section, the contributors look at being left and leaving from psychological, sociological, economic, sexual, medical, anthropological, and literary perspectives. Other essays explore the shared experiences of specific classes of women, such as single women, widows, or abandoned daughters.

Book Before All Hell Breaks Loose

Download or read book Before All Hell Breaks Loose written by Ken Hutcherson and published by Multnomah. This book was released on 2011-05-11 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pastor Ken Hutcherson is a candid commentator on the state of the modern church. He says we're living in the midst of the Seven Churches of Revelation right now. The real question for believers today is not, "What does the church think about Jesus?" but rather, "What does Jesus think about His Church?" What does He think about the passion, purity, and priorities of today's believers? Is He pleased? Grieved? Angry? Hutcherson shows how the message contained in Revelation, chapters two and three, is as up-to-date as today's headlines. This dynamic follow-up to Here Comes the Bride is the timely "wake-up call" every church -- and individual -- needs today.

Book The Discourse of Powerlessness and Repression

Download or read book The Discourse of Powerlessness and Repression written by Hans J. Ladegaard and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2016-10-26 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on a large corpus of narratives recorded at a church shelter for abused domestic helpers in Hong Kong, this monograph explores how the women discursively construct themselves in sharing sessions with other helpers. They see themselves as ‘helpers’ who have come to Hong Kong to help their families, to help the people in the city, and to serve God. A wide variety of competing identities are constructed in the narratives: submissive helper, sacrificial mother, daughter and wife, and powerless traumatised victim, but also resourceful indignant migrant women who, through sharing and peer support, become empowered to fight against abusive employers. This book provides a detailed discourse analysis of the women’s narratives, but it also explores larger issues such as global migration, exploitation, language and power, abuse and the psychology of evil, intergroup communication, and peer support and empowerment.
