Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old Testament Student, Vol. 8: With New Testament Supplement; September, 1888 June, 1889 With the present volume a new feature begins, viz., the New Testament studies contained in the Supplement. In undertaking this new department, the student does not in any sense lose sight of its original purpose. The simple fact is that the advocacy of the inductive method Of Bible-study is as much a part of the work Of the student as is the advocacy of the study of the Old Testament. In furtherance, therefore, of this kind Of Bible-study, the New Testament lessons are furnished. The interest already manifested in them is sufficient ground for the feeling that no mistake has been made in this new departure. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old Testament Student, Vol. 3 The supposition that the pronoun lzz'm originally did not relate to the speaker, but to the meat is quite unnecessary. The Lord compares himself to a heavehly meat and as such he is, as he says, sealed by the Father. Really it is conceivable that he, saying so, has in mind the custom of bakers which is expressed by their name, or of which their name is certainly a reminder. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old Testament Student, Vol. 7 Shall the study of the Bible have a place in the college curriculum? This question those engaged in college education must ask and must answer. Tc be sure, it is not a new question. There have always been individuals who have pressed it. There have always been institutions in which such study has been provided for. But as never before the question now comes to us; and it comes with force capable of overcoming all ordinary obstacles. The opportune moment has arrived for a movement which shall aim to place in the curriculum of every American college at least an elective course in the study of the English Bible. Let the friends of this movement unite and act. To how great an extent has the Bible already been assigned a place in the curriculum of our colleges? The brief statements contained in this number of a dozen or more leading college presidents, will in part answer this question. Quite a number of institutions offer something. But is it really bona fide work that is provided for? Is it not in most cases so managed as to become either an unpopular and unprofitable task, or a popular and unprofitable "snap"? Docs the Bible-department, in those colleges in which it exists, have the dignity possessed by other departments? Is it, after all, regarded as a department of the college, and not rather as a sort of Sunday-school appendage? The truth is this: Only a few, at best, of our institutions, recognize such work as worth doing; and in these few, with some exceptions of course, such study is so conducted as practically to be a farce. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old Testament Student, Vol. 4: September, 1884-June, 1885 The new theory was everywhere discussed, and almost everywhere condemned. Assyriologists and non-assyriologists joined hands in assailing it. Only a few voices were heard in its favor, and those less in the way of careful defense, than in allusions and expressions Of personal Opinion.+ In spite, however, Of the strong Objections brought against his theory, Professor Delitzsch is understood to maintain his ground, and this adds a further zest to the examination upon which we are about to enter. But before beginning it, it is important to distinguish three possible forms Of fundamental inquiry (i). Where was the Garden of Eden, as a matter of fact and of history? Where did the author Of Gen. 8 - 14 think it was? What has been the history of belief in regard to it, among ancient peoples It is not meant that these questions do not have an intimate connection, and a direct bearing upon each other, but only that for purposes of scientific study a distinction must be made be tween them. In the present case it is the second form of the inquiry which is adopted, - that form which underlies Professor Delitzsch's work, in spite of his title, which points rather to (i) - and any light upon (i) or (3) which may be gained will be incidental and unde signed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old Testament Student, Vol. 5: September, 1885 June, 1886 There is first a prelude, where we have an angel or priestly chorus praising God. Give unto Jehovah, O ye sons of God, Give unto Jehovah glory and strength. Give unto Jehovah the glory due his name. Worship Jehovah in holy vestments. Then follow three strophes describing the storm. The first gives us its beginning, the low faint muttering thunder in the heavens. Book Old Testament History Classic Reprint

Download or read book Old Testament History Classic Reprint written by Ismar J. Peritz and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-25 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Testament History The present treatment of Old Testament history aims to conform to the object of the series as handbooks to Bible study. The Bible itself is, accordingly, the main primary source. In each Section the biblical text, as indicated in the margin, is the basis Of the discussion, and requires the first attention of the student. Where the biblical material is most abundant the history is consequently the fullest. But it has become increasingly evident that the material of the Bible is not chronologically arranged, but that accounts centuries apart in their origin and point of view are Often found side by Side or interwoven with each other. The recognition of this fact is the result of the historical and scientific method of the Bible study of our day. It will account for the order and method here adopted. If the reason for the procedure is not always fully stated, it is due to the design of the series not to deal SO much with the process as with the results achieved. Only where Silence would leave the biblical situation obscure was it deemed necessary to enter into the discussion of critical questions, and then only in the briefest way possible. The logical movement of Old Testament history which is the outcome of the critical use of the biblical material proves ultimately its strongest justification. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Testament Studies: An Outline of Old Testament Theology The bible is a many-sided book, and it should be read and studied from many points of view. The truths which were conveyed through the centuries to God's ancient people, and which through them were intended to be conveyed to us, must be thoroughly and rightly grasped before they can be safely applied. This book is the brief development of a plan of Old Testament study which I have pursued for several years, and with great profit to myself. If any Bible student who has not already done so, should develop for himself this or some similar topical plan, neither could he fail to find it very beneficial, especially if it should be done in that spirit which should always characterize our study of the Word of God. Book Knowing About the Old Testament

Download or read book Knowing About the Old Testament written by Miriam A. Robinson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-03 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Knowing About the Old Testament: A Study Notebook on the Old Testament for Students in High School The Bible was not written at the same time. The time of writing covers about 1000 years. There is a great difference in the circumstances under which each person wrote. Some of the books were written in quiet and peaceful circumstances. Some were written in prison. Some books were written when the author was in great sorrow. There are other books which were written to show joy and others were written to help answer a problem in living. The first book of the Bible is Genesis. It was probably written about years before Jesus lived. The last book of the Bible is The Revelation of John. It was written about one hundred years after Jesus lived. In between those times men were writ ing as they were moved by the Holy Spirit to write the words of God. Download or read book The Heart of the Old Testament written by John R. Sampey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-18 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Heart of the Old Testament: A Manual for Christian Students Where can I find an Old Testament manual written by a modern scholar who believes thoroughly in the supernatural in both Testaments? You hold the answer in your hands. It is not an Old Testament History, though it follows the thread Of the story from beginning to end; it is not a book on Old Testament Literature, though it opens up the poetical and prophetical books to the student; it is not a treatise on Old Testament The ology, though it calls attention to the rise and develop ment of the great doctrines of the Hebrew Scriptures. The author has not limited himself to biography and his tory, nor to literary analysis and appreciation, nor to the growth of Bible doctrines; but he has freely drawn from these and other departments Of Old Testament study whatever seemed of most value to young people in Chris tian homes and schools in the twentieth century. His aim is to call attention to what is most worth while. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Brief Biblical History: Old Testament Religious education is one of the many problems of our day, and nowhere is the difficulty more acute than in the case of the Old Testament. Under no circumstances is it an easy task to arrange the different component parts of a volume so varied in such a manner as to give a young student a clear idea of its meaning and purpose. Isolated stories may arouse interest, but their connexion with the rest is not very obvious. Here and there a psalm or prophecy may touch the heart; but it stands as a thing apart, without anything to account for its origin. Not unfrequently, moreover, in the course of instruction in a particular book we meet with narratives apparently unedifying, or sentiments which are certainly not in accord with the highest views today. There is the further difficulty of answering questions like Is such an account true? Is this or that statement in accordance with what we are taught in a lesson on science or geography? Do people really believe this? For youth is a season of credulous scepticism. A child will accept much on authority, and at the same time is ready with questions going to the Very root of a matter. He also possesses an instinctive power of detecting that the teacher is himself doubtful as to the facts on which he is insisting. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Books of the Old Testament Nearly all Old Testament scholars in Germany, England, and America, who have been trained in the universities and are not adherents of the Roman Catholic faith, are agreed as to the main results which have been achieved by careful investigations carried on during the nineteenth century, though there are necessarily differences of opinion upon secondary details. It is important that the reader should realise the immense gulf which separates the modern physical conditions of book-making, since the discovery of printing, from the ancient conditions when all records were laboriously copied by hand upon such rough materials as skins or papyrus and were preserved in rolls. Book The Student Old Testament Logically and Chronologically and Prayers Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Student Old Testament Logically and Chronologically and Prayers Classic Reprint written by Charles Foster Kent and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-09 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Student Old Testament, Logically and Chronologically, and Prayers During the critical period of Bible study that is just passing, the Hebrew lyrics, and especially the great psalms of the Old Testament Psalter, have been to a certain extent neglected. The present generation, however, is beginning to experience the joy of rediscovering them. Like the Gospels in the New Testament, they are the real heart of the;old Testament. In them the innermost soul of the Jewish race is laid bare. In such psalms as the eighth, the twenty-third, the fifty-first, the ninetieth, the ninety first, the one hundred and third, and the one hundred and thirty-ninth Israel's faith finds its noblest expression. These immortal hymns of praise and adoration are also the link that binds the Old to the New Testament. In their atmosphere Jesus was born, bred, and lived, Faith, hope, joy, love, loyalty, and service are the six virtues pre-eminently emphasized. A dauntless faith in God and in man; an invincible hope that the future holds in store only what is essentially good; a serene joy even in the presence of disaster and distress; a passionate love of nature, of nature's God, and of all his creatures; a devoted loyalty to the law, to the institutions and ideals of the race, and to the divine Father who inspired them; and, to crown all, a burning zeal to help the needy, the ignorant and erring, and to carry the knowledge of God and the blessings of true religion to the ends of the earth - these are the supreme contributions of the psalms to the present age. Here Israel's greatest prophets, priests, and sages speak out of the depths and richness of their own personal experience directly to the heart of modern man.
