Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Testament Life and Literature So far as space has permitted, all those contacts, national and international, that influenced the He brews, have been presented as the background of the literature. It was in the midst of national travail, with its frequent tragedy and occasional triumph, that the great Old Testament leaders ever ministered, directly to their fellow men, in the realm of morals and religion. Book The Old Testament in the Life of Today Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Old Testament in the Life of Today Classic Reprint written by Rev John a Rice and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old Testament in the Life of Today The author is trying to do four things in this book First, to trace in broad outline the growth of the Old Testament, so that the untrained mind can think through its evolution. To many people this wonderful collection of booklets has little meaning as a whole. It is a confused and confusing mass of heterogeneous materials. Yet it came gradually out of the unfolding life of the Hebrews and the order of its coming is now well understood by those familiar with modern scholar ship. That order is suggested in the bird's-eye view given in the Table of Contents and exhibited in the pages that follow. Another end in view is the shifting of attention from texts and verses to men and books. We miss the power of this literature by minute dissection. Great truths are Often here set forth, whole situations summed up, in single sentences of concrete gripping epigrams, brilliant paragraphs drive home telling messages, but even these can be fully appreciated only by understanding their historic origin and larger context. The Old Testament is not a collection of texts but a series of books of life. In these rather than in detailed verses are to be found God's words to men. Download or read book The New Testament in Life and Literature Classic Reprint written by Jane T. Stoddart and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Testament in Life and Literature The very kind reception given by reviewers and by the public to "The Old Testament in Life and Literature" has been my chief encouragement in completing the present volume for the press. I am especially grateful for the interesting letters I have received from ministerial and other readers in every part of the country, and for the many assurances conveyed to me that the work has proved helpful to preachers well as to private students of the Holy Scriptures. The plan of the earlier book having been generally approved, I have adopted it in illustrating the New Testament. The material has been gathered in my private reading, spread over a number of years, and nothing whatever has been borrowed from anthologies or homiletic sources. Foreign literature has again been largely used, and with a few exceptions mentioned in the footnotes, all translations have been made at first hand. I have once more enjoyed the great advantage of counsel and guidance from Sir W.Robertson Nicoll, and my heartiest thanks are due to him for sympathetic aid during the entire progress of the work. I thank my publishers, and especially Mr. J. E. Hodder Williams, for the very kind personal interest they have shown in both volumes, and Mr. G.L. Thomson of the Aberdeen University Press for the care and accuracy of the setting. On the last point let me add that in a work of this kind it is almost impossible wholly to avoid verbal errors, and I shall gratefully receive and acknowledge any corrections. Download or read book Everyday Life in Old Testament Times Classic Reprint written by E. W. Heaton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Everyday Life in Old Testament Times I have tried to write for all who are interested in the Old Testament (except, of course, the learned), but I have had particularly in mind boys and girls in the upper forms of secondary and public schools, students in training colleges, freshmen at universities, teachers, and, not least, that admirable kind of general reader who wishes to read the Bible and who knows from experience that it is wise to consult a guide-book before Venturing abroad. To open the pages of the Old Testament is, indeed, to enter a' foreign territory and its exploration is bound to be fruitless and frustrating, unless we discover by a little preliminary study what to expect, what to look for, and what kind of people' we are likely to meet. We shall lose our bearings, if we read our Western civilization into the Old Testament and assume that the Israelites were exactly like ourselves except for their Arab type clothes. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Books of the Old Testament Nearly all Old Testament scholars in Germany, England, and America, who have been trained in the universities and are not adherents of the Roman Catholic faith, are agreed as to the main results which have been achieved by careful investigations carried on during the nineteenth century, though there are necessarily differences of opinion upon secondary details. It is important that the reader should realise the immense gulf which separates the modern physical conditions of book-making, since the discovery of printing, from the ancient conditions when all records were laboriously copied by hand upon such rough materials as skins or papyrus and were preserved in rolls. This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Origin and Permanent Value of the Old Testament During the past generation the Old Testament has commanded equally with the New the enthusiastic and devoted study of the great body of biblical scholars throughout the world. Two out of every three graduate students in our universities who specialize in the general field of biblical literature choose the Old as the special centre of their work. At the same time the tendency of the rank and file of the Christian church within the past decade has undoubtedly been to neglect the older Testament. Preachers as a rule select less than a fourth of their texts from it; the prevailing courses of Bible study devote proportionately less time to it; and teachers and scholars in the great majority of cases turn to the Old Testament with much less enthusiasm than they do to the New. Why are these two great currents setting in opposite directions, and what are the causes of the present popular neglect of the Old Testament? Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Eagle Life: And Other Studies in the Old Testament The Divine Spirit would brood over the dancing, frolicsome waters of our joys. And it is the miracle of grace that when the Lord countenances a joy it is strangely enhanced. He adds sunshine to daylight. He trans mutes happiness into blessedness. He eh dows our delights with heavenly Virtue. The joy Of the Lord becomes our strength. N 0 one has ever tasted really superlative joy until there has brooded over his gladness the transforming and beautifying Spirit Of God. And He will brood over our labour when we are doing our daily business in great waters. He delights to glorify the common lot and common toil. It is His purpose to hallow the commonplace, the vast world of the ordinary in which we earn our daily bread. In The Angelus, in which Millet pictures two peasants, man and woman, standing with bowed heads as the bells Of evening send across the fields the call to prayer, the painter has thrown a softening light not only upon the humble worshippers. Book The Christian View of the Old Testament Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Christian View of the Old Testament Classic Reprint written by Frederick Carl Eiselen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-29 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian View of the Old Testament During the past half century the attitude of many men toward the Bible has undergone a decided change. The old confidence seems to be gone; a feeling of uncertainty and of unrest has taken its place. This small volume is intended to set forth the Christian View of the Old Testa ment, and to furnish answers to some of the questions men are asking concerning the Sacred Scriptures of the Hebrews, which the early Chris tians included in the canon of Christian sacred writings. The old foundations are not shaken. The Old Testament has stood the tests of the past, which have been severe and often merciless; and there is to-day stronger ground than ever for believing that in its pages men spake from God, being moved by the Holy Spirit. Book Stories From the Old Testament Classic Reprint

Download or read book Stories From the Old Testament Classic Reprint written by Mrs. Henry C. Parker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-25 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories From the Old Testament The stories in this book are those which were told and retold by the Hebrew people a long time ago, and are found in that part Of the Bible called the Old Testament. It is good for us to know what they in that far-oe time thought about the things which we still think about and won der over, - the earth, the people and creatures upon it, and the God who made it. We must keep in mind the fact that we are not reading histories, but stories which give us thoughts about things instead of facts about them. We are not to think that all they tell us is true, but read the stories for the truth that is in them. In them God walks on the earth, and talks with men as if He were Himself a man. Sometimes He sends angels to speak for Him and to do what He wants to have done. This was the Old-time way of thinking and speaking; but we may be lieve that God spoke in the past as He speaks to-day, - that is, in the thought and conscience of those who love Him. Who ever brings to us a word Of truth and life is His angel, or mes senger. Sometimes He and His servants do impossible things and things which do not seem to us right or good. This is be cause the stories come to us from a time when people did not have schools and churches and the same thoughts of what is good and true that we have today. But in each story there is a lesson that is as good for us as it was for them of olden time. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
