Book The Old Testament Homer Dives In A Story Reader s Guide For Kids Of All Ages

Download or read book The Old Testament Homer Dives In A Story Reader s Guide For Kids Of All Ages written by Michelle Edwards & Barbara Boyd and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2014-10-28 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Meet Homer, a normal boy in every respect but one: he reads at an intergalactic speed. One morning in church, as a way to stay out of trouble, Homer began to read the Old Testament. As he raced past kings, battles and talking donkeys, Homer was reading and having a ball. The Old Testament, he learned, "is quite thrilling," and "all of its stories deserve top billing " Homer's story is paired with a Reader's Guide to more stories in the Old Testament. Those stories reveal God as the creator of the universe and as the author of an audacious plan for redemption and reconciliation. Arranged chronologically, the guide is swept along by the current of the Old Testament narrative, all the way to the advent of the Messiah. As that narrative flows into the New Testament, Old and New Testament connections are clearly presented. So grab your Bible and an imaginary camera, and join Homer as we dive into the Bible.

Book The Pleasures of Reading in an Age of Distraction

Download or read book The Pleasures of Reading in an Age of Distraction written by Alan Jacobs and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2011-05-26 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, cultural commentators have sounded the alarm about the dire state of reading in America. Americans are not reading enough, they say, or reading the right books, in the right way. In this book, Alan Jacobs argues that, contrary to the doomsayers, reading is alive and well in America. There are millions of devoted readers supporting hundreds of enormous bookstores and online booksellers. Oprah's Book Club is hugely influential, and a recent NEA survey reveals an actual uptick in the reading of literary fiction. Jacobs's interactions with his students and the readers of his own books, however, suggest that many readers lack confidence; they wonder whether they are reading well, with proper focus and attentiveness, with due discretion and discernment. Many have absorbed the puritanical message that reading is, first and foremost, good for you--the intellectual equivalent of eating your Brussels sprouts. For such people, indeed for all readers, Jacobs offers some simple, powerful, and much needed advice: read at whim, read what gives you delight, and do so without shame, whether it be Stephen King or the King James Version of the Bible. In contrast to the more methodical approach of Mortimer Adler's classic How to Read a Book (1940), Jacobs offers an insightful, accessible, and playfully irreverent guide for aspiring readers. Each chapter focuses on one aspect of approaching literary fiction, poetry, or nonfiction, and the book explores everything from the invention of silent reading, reading responsively, rereading, and reading on electronic devices. Invitingly written, with equal measures of wit and erudition, The Pleasures of Reading in an Age of Distraction will appeal to all readers, whether they be novices looking for direction or old hands seeking to recapture the pleasures of reading they first experienced as children.

Book Stories from the Old Testament Book 4

Download or read book Stories from the Old Testament Book 4 written by Fred Wurlitzter and published by . This book was released on 2020-12-12 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Judeo-Christianity is the largest religious group in the world. With over one-billion followers, the demand for children's books reflecting Judeo-Christianity is humongous. Yet, on Amazon, less than two dozen religious books for children with an orientation towards Judeo-Christianity are listed. None could be found with poetry, although there were possibly some historically. The poetry in this book is in the style of Ogden Nash. It is not great poetry. It is relatively simple in a manner suitable for a child or adults appreciating child-like thinking. Hopefully, some of the poetry will be interesting to a young child or a child of any age. I hope that in taking a reader away from biblical language that is sometimes stilted, and by using doggerel and cartoons, this comic book will be seen as being highly readable by children of all ages. I happen to believe sincerely in God. I trust that belief will not offend the reader. I hope that with illustrations and doggerel, children and adults thinking like children will be mesmerized.
