Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Books of the Old Testament Nearly all Old Testament scholars in Germany, England, and America, who have been trained in the universities and are not adherents of the Roman Catholic faith, are agreed as to the main results which have been achieved by careful investigations carried on during the nineteenth century, though there are necessarily differences of opinion upon secondary details. It is important that the reader should realise the immense gulf which separates the modern physical conditions of book-making, since the discovery of printing, from the ancient conditions when all records were laboriously copied by hand upon such rough materials as skins or papyrus and were preserved in rolls. Book The Old Testament in the Life of Today Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Old Testament in the Life of Today Classic Reprint written by Rev John a Rice and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old Testament in the Life of Today The author is trying to do four things in this book First, to trace in broad outline the growth of the Old Testament, so that the untrained mind can think through its evolution. To many people this wonderful collection of booklets has little meaning as a whole. It is a confused and confusing mass of heterogeneous materials. Yet it came gradually out of the unfolding life of the Hebrews and the order of its coming is now well understood by those familiar with modern scholar ship. That order is suggested in the bird's-eye view given in the Table of Contents and exhibited in the pages that follow. Another end in view is the shifting of attention from texts and verses to men and books. We miss the power of this literature by minute dissection. Great truths are Often here set forth, whole situations summed up, in single sentences of concrete gripping epigrams, brilliant paragraphs drive home telling messages, but even these can be fully appreciated only by understanding their historic origin and larger context. The Old Testament is not a collection of texts but a series of books of life. In these rather than in detailed verses are to be found God's words to men. This book was released on 2018-03-08 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to the Study of the Old Testament However willingly I might have undertaken the labour of giving an entirely new form to this new edition of the Introduction to the Old Testament, ' my contemporaries have hitherto afforded me small occasion to exchange the results of my former researches against other convictions. I am obliged, therefore, to confine myself merely to remedy the defects of the former editions to the best of my judg ment and power, and bring the present one up to the level of the existing state of Biblical Literature. The proposed alterations, then, affect less the entire work. Than its details, and I h0pe to have omitted nothing essential from new works which may have appeared, either to its increase or improvement. May the public be only as well pleased with the present as with past editions! About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Abiding Value of the Old Testament Between the God of the Old Testament and the God of the New, extreme Views have prevailed among men as to whether the Old Testament is really an essential part of Christianity. Some are disposed to cut the New Tes tament aloof from the Hebrew Scrip tures altogether, because, as they claim, Christianity can live on quite as well without them. Others regard the Old Testament as the millstone about the neck of Christianity, a stumbling-block to Christians as much as the Cross is to the Jews. While others, who are not so explicitly antagonistic in their atti. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Outlines of an Introduction to the Old Testament Classic Reprint

Download or read book Outlines of an Introduction to the Old Testament Classic Reprint written by John Walter Beardslee and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of an Introduction to the Old Testament These Outlines are the outgrowth of fifteen years of study and teaching. They are designed simply to indicate the lines along which study is demanded if one is to understand the teachings of the Old Testa ment. NO effort has been made to present an exhaust ive review of the ideas which have been advanced by others in regard to these remarkable books, or to give completeness to the views of the author. Only such points as seem necessary to a correct understanding of the text are presented and these are stated in the briefest form, with such references as may guide the way to further study. If the position here taken seem conservative, it is not because the writer has ignored the later criticism or underestimates its value, but because the newer ideas do not seem to be sufficiently established to demand the abandonment of the older. Great gain has already come from the learned and laborious investigations of the new school of criticism and we hope for still richer fruitage in the future, but the results thus far secured are too vague to become a satisfactory basis for the interpretation of Scripture. This book was released on 2017-11-29 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Religious Ideas of the Old Testament Scripture is shown by its fundamental conception of religion as the personal fellowship of God and man. Prior to the New Testament, and judged simply from the stand point of comparative religion, the Old Testament offers the purest and noblest example of that conception. The proof of the reality of that fellowship is the moral emphasis which characterises the religion of Israel. The author of this book is much, indebted to Dr. G. Buchanan Gray and the Rev. David Stewart, m.a., who have read it in manuscript, and rendered valuable help by their numerous criticisms and suggestions. He has also to thank the Rev. H. O. Rowse, m.a., for assistance in the correction of the proofs. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Book of the Old and New Testament, Vol. 14 The second part of the Old Testament, the Apocrypha (see Section contains two classes of writings: 1. Those which were originally written in Greek; 2. Those which are Greek translations of Hebrew works. They formed an appendix to the Greek translation of the Hebrew Bible the additions to Esther and Daniel were introduced in the proper places in the Greek translation of those books. For when, after the foundation of Alexandria in Egypt, many Jews settled in that city for commercial purposes, they, by degrees, forgot their mother tongue. They learned to speak Greek. Hence arose the necessity for a translation into Greek, of the Old Testament, which they could no longer read in Hebrew. This translation was used in the synagogues. Thus arose the Greek translation of the Old Testament, bearing the name of Septuagint (septuaginta), which, beyond a doubt, is the most ancient version of the older Scriptures. To this translation were sub joined the apocryphal books, which thus gradually came into use. The time of the origin of these apocryphal works falls in the centuries that immediately preceded the advent of Christ. Some of them, however, for example, Judith, are later than the public ministry of our Lord. (more exact statements are given under the several books of the Apo crypha.) Among the books of the New Testament, the letters of Paul take precedence in point of time. His apostolical labours and the tounda tion and instruction of Christian communities by him, gave him first, among all apostles, occasion for the composition of his letters. Of these we possess thirteen. The time of their origin begins about the middle of the first century of our era, that is, about from eighteen to twenty years after the Saviour's death. Reference to lost letters of Paul is made in these passages, namely, 1 Cor. V. 9, and Coloss. Iv. 16. Paul was followed by Peter, James, Jude, and John, letters from whose pens have been preserved to the present time. Download or read book The Old Testament and the Critics Classic Reprint written by John Milton Williams and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-11 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old Testament and the Critics The object of the author in preparing this little volume and taking the liberty of in truding it upon the public. Is not the estab lishment Of the divine authority of the Old Testament. The awful claim of being a communication from God to our race, he believes should be acknowledged only up on evidence the most unimpeachable. Yet the author most fully accepts this claim. The evidence on which it rests seems to him so ample, so overwhelming and so limitless, the thought of adequately presenting it, were he able to do so, brings the feeling of weari ness and discouragement. For more than thirty centuries the Old Testament, like some sacred fountain, has been issuing streams of healing, of hope and gladness, and every year the evidence of its divine origin has been accumulating.
