Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old Testament and the Critics The object of the author in preparing this little volume and taking the liberty of in truding it upon the public. Is not the estab lishment Of the divine authority of the Old Testament. The awful claim of being a communication from God to our race, he believes should be acknowledged only up on evidence the most unimpeachable. Yet the author most fully accepts this claim. The evidence on which it rests seems to him so ample, so overwhelming and so limitless, the thought of adequately presenting it, were he able to do so, brings the feeling of weari ness and discouragement. For more than thirty centuries the Old Testament, like some sacred fountain, has been issuing streams of healing, of hope and gladness, and every year the evidence of its divine origin has been accumulating. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Old Testament Criticism AM asked to tell to a large body Of thoughtful readers what has been the story of the criti cal cr literary handling Of the Old Testament throughout the ages, as scientific study of that literature is at present showing what the story has been. I am told, with admirable frankness, that the only condition laid upon me is that my tale be the true one; I am kindly given to under stand that the Directorate Of the publication have full confidence in my spirit and method, as these have been shown in my various works. For this confidence I am bound to utter my heartfelt and deep gratitude, in the belief that such a trust will inspire me to leave no jot or tittle of due exposition unrecorded. Under a sense of spiritual compulsion upon me to set forth the beautiful record to every ear that will hear, I set out on the task, feeling most deeply my feebleness, but knowing also that strength is always sufficient as one goes forward in the course of duty. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Letter to Old Testament Critics I do not challenge the results to which Old Testament critics have attained, but I desire to call attention to certain neglected quantities which must very greatly modify the solution of the problem at which we all aim. The Priest-code, which according to custom I denote by P, forms the backbone of Genesis. Its formal and numerical character has often been noted, but the reason for this, and the extent to which P in Genesis is constructed upon the number ten, has not been noticed. P in Genesis consists of ten "Generations" which are introduced by the formula "These are the Generations of &c." Book Old Testament Criticism and the Christian Church Classic Reprint

Download or read book Old Testament Criticism and the Christian Church Classic Reprint written by John Edgar McFadyen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-10 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Testament Criticism and the Christian Church Bible first began to make its appeal to me; and I write with the tenderest regard for all who feel as I then felt. The times of transition are hard. It would be a grief to me if any word of mine should wound the sensitiveness Of any who love the Lord or the sacred Scriptures. It has been my earnest desire to help all who have been troubled. Of ridicule, abuse, and provocation there has already been more than enough. Not only by familiarizing myself with the literature which represents the opposition to the critical move ment, but also by numerous discussions and conversa tions with laymen, students, and ministers, on both Sides of the Atlantic, I have sought to understand sympathetically the spirit and methods Of the opposi tion, to discover the secret Of its almost vehement earnestness, and the interests which it believes to be imperilled by the advance Of criticism. I have the profoundest sympathy for those who share the views from which this volume is, in part, an implicit dissent; for I know the pang of parting with them. But in parting with the things that can be shaken, one may be confirmed all the more in the things that abide. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Criticism and the Old Testament We do not even differ as to the use of terms, for we, too, prefer to avoid the word myth.' Further, the reviewer seems to think that we do not admit the historicity Of the Patriarchs, from the time Of Abraham. This is quite contrary to our clearly expressed Opinion. But if popular legend developed that history in its own peculiar way, as Herr Vetter grants it did, are not such stories as that of the wife of Lot, and the origin of Moab and Ammon, typical instances of the process? Book The Old Testament in the Jewish Church

Download or read book The Old Testament in the Jewish Church written by W. Robertson Smith and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old Testament in the Jewish Church: A Course of Lectures on Biblical Criticism In republishing these Lectures, eleven years after their first appearance, I have had to consider what to emend, what to omit, and what to add. First, then, a careful revision of the whole volume has enabled me to correct a certain number of errors, and to make many statements more precise. In the second place, I have pruned away some redundancies more proper to oral delivery than to a printed book; and I have also removed from the "Notes and Illustrations" some things which seemed to be superfluous. As I was resolved to make no change on the general plan of the book, I at first hoped that these omissions would give me space for all necessary additions; for though much good work has been done within the last decade on special problems of Old Testament Criticism, there are not many points where these special researches affect the general arguments and broad results which I desired to set forth. But on mature consideration I came to see that in one direction the book might be profitably enlarged without a fundamental change of plan; it was desirable to give a fuller account of what the critics have to say about the narrative of the Old Testament Books. I have, therefore, made large additions to the part of Lecture V. that treats of the historical books, and, in consequence, have thrown the whole discussion of the Canon into Lecture VI. Book Criticism and the Old Testament

Download or read book Criticism and the Old Testament written by H. Theodore Knight and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Criticism and the Old Testament: A Popular Introduction 'The critical study of the Bible by competent scholars is essential to the maintenance in the Church of a healthy faith. That faith is already in serious danger which refuses to face questions that may be raised either on the authority or the genuineness of any part of the Scriptures that have come down to us. Such refusal creates a painful suspicion in the minds of many whom we have to teach, and will weaken the strength of our own conviction of the truth that God has revealed to us. A faith which is always or often attended by a secret fear that we dare not inquire, lest inquiry should lead us to results inconsistent with what we believe, is already infected with a disease which may soon destroy it.' Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Problem of the Old Testament: Considered With Reference to Recent Criticism The thanks of the author are due, in the first place, to the Trustees of Lake Forest College, and to the ad judicators acting on their behalf, who, in their generosity, have awarded to this book the munificent prize at their dis posal from the Bross Fund. It is right, however, to say, that, although the present volume has been so fortunate as to obtain the Bross Prize, it was not for the Bross Prize, or with thought or knowledge of the same, that the book was written. But for a long-standing promise to the English publishers, it is doubtful if it ever would have been written at all. The book was sent to press in the beginning of this year, and the delay in its publication has been due principally to the afterthought of submitting it in proof to the judgment of the Bross Prize arbiters. The author is deeply sensible of the courtesy of the publishers in so readily meeting his Wishes in this matter at inconvenience to themselves. Book The Battle of the Standpoints

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Battle of the Standpoints: The Old Testament and the Higher Criticism Porary Review requested me to reply to articles on Old Testament Criticism by Canons Cheyne and Driver, I instantly availed myself of the precious Opportunity, and stated, in the April number of the Review, the grounds of belief in the Mosaic Authorship of the Five Books of the Law. Thereupon I received many requests, some from prominent members of the Church of England, to republish the article for popular distribution. But, from its assuming prior knowledge of the positions of the Development Critics, my article seemed to me unsuitable for popular use. On an invitation, how ever, to read a paper on the Higher Criticism of the Old Testament before the Evangelical Alliance at its meeting at Manchester, I kept the aim of subse quent publication distinctly in view. The following pages are an expansion of the paper read. And I trust that, by studied avoidance of all technical and scholastic matters, these pages may be fitted to give not unimportant information to all readers interested in the momentous question treated. Book Biblical Criticism and Modern Thought

Download or read book Biblical Criticism and Modern Thought written by W. G. Jordan and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biblical Criticism and Modern Thought: Or the Place of the Old Testament Documents in the Life of to-Day The author of the present volume was appointed to the Chancellor's Lectureship of Queen's University in 1906 and 1907, and delivered to the Theological Alumni Association the nine lectures which form the substance of the book. Chapter I., which now serves as an Introduction, appeared in 1901 as an article in The Biblical World (Chicago), and is reproduced by permission; Chapter XI. was read before The Philosophical Society of Queen's University in the autumn of 1906; the remaining three chapters, X., XIII., and XIV., were added to round out a little more the programme that the author had in mind. So much as to the origin of the book, now as to its plan and purpose. The title, though perhaps somewhat too general, indicates the spirit in which the work was undertaken. Considering the audience to which, in the first place, the lectures were to be addressed, it was thought advisable to attempt a general review of the Old Testament Problem. Book Founders of Old Testament Criticism

Download or read book Founders of Old Testament Criticism written by Thomas Kelly Cheyne and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Founders of Old Testament Criticism: Biographical, Descriptive, and Critical Studies The present volume contains a series of pictures of eminent Old Testament critics from the beginning of the critical movement to the present day, with an attempt in each case to estimate the services of the subject of the picture. It is hoped that it may be not only interesting but instructive, and may-tend to remove some current mistakes and misconceptions. Let me mention a few of these. Criticism, it is said by some, is a recent invention; it is arrogant to pretend that it has reached any final or even approximate results. Criticism, say others, is of purely German origin; it is foolish to import what has no roots in our own mental history. Criticism, says yet another school of writers, is purely rationalistic; it has no interest in, and can be of no considerable service to, positive theological truth. Criticism, say a few other respected but isolated observers, is narrow in its methods; it goes on grinding for ever at the same mill, and needs an almost complete reconstruction.
