Book The Geology of Scotland 4th edition

Download or read book The Geology of Scotland 4th edition written by N. H. Trewin and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2003-02-24 with total page 604 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 4th edition of The Geology of Scotland is greatly expanded from the previous edition with 34 authors contributing to 20 chapters. A new format has been adopted to provide a different perspective on the geology of Scotland. A brief introduction is followed by a chapter outlining some of the important historical aspects that in the 19th century placed Scottish geologists in the forefront of a new science. Scotland is constructed from a number of terranes that finally combined in roughly their present positions prior to about 410 million years ago. Thus the geology of each terrane is described up the time of amalgamation, providing chapters on the Southern Uplands, Midland Valley, Highlands, Grampian and Hebridean terranes. At the end of this section, a brief synthesis summarizes the events that resulted in the amalgamation of the various terranes into the present configuration. Traditional practice is followed in the description of the Old Red Sandstone, Carboniferous, Permo-Trias, Jurassic, Cretaceous, tertiary and Quaternary strata. A separate chapter covers Tertiary igneous rocks. An attempt is made to tell the story of the geological evolution of Scotland, rather than catalogue all areas and formations. Priority is given to the onshore geology, encouraging the reader to go into the field and visit some of the world-class geology on show in Scotland. The chapters are broadly-based, attempting to integrate the sedimentary and igneous histories, and summarize changes in palaeogeography and palaeoenvironments. Economic aspects are covered with chapters on Metalliferous Minerals, Bulk Resources, Coal and Hydrocarbons. A new departure is the chapter on aspects of Environmental Geology and sustainability. Additionally, this publication contains a colour section of 32 plates, illustrating aspects of Scottish Geology, as well as a coloured geological map of Scotland.

Book Lacustrine Facies Analysis

Download or read book Lacustrine Facies Analysis written by P. Anadon and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-04-03 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book considers the deposition of sediments in different types of lakes and shows how changes in the lake environment can be interpreted from the sediment facies at the lake floor. Lakes are particularly sensitive to climate change and thus their sediments are accurate indicators of environmental change and palaeoclimate. This volume examines both ancient and modern lake deposits which is particularly appropriate considering the current widespread interest in global climate change, with particular emphasis on global warming. The book is global in approach and contains fifteen papers from an internationally acclaimed authorship. The volume will be of particular interest to sedimentologists, petroleum geologists, economic geologists and geographers with a particular interest in global climate change

Download or read book Coastwise written by Peter Firstbrook and published by Fernhurst Books Limited. This book was released on 2021-11-02 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coastwise examines the coastline of the British Isles as a dynamic environment and offers you an understandable explanation of how the coastline functions as a single entity. It is supported by hundreds of stunning photos and illustrations. It begins by exploring how the forces of nature combine to create its physical features (and continue to do so). This is a multifaceted story that involves ancient geology and powerful ocean forces. It then turns to the living nature of the coast, covering the unique plants, animals and other organisms whose interdependence keeps the coast alive and healthy. These amazing creatures are described and displayed in full colour. The third part of the book looks at how humans have interacted with the coast, using it for defence, commerce and leisure. It explores these aspects from the earliest times to the present day. The final section shows, for each coastal region, where the features discussed in the book can be observed and enjoyed, giving you a practical way of exploring the elements described in the book. All aspects of the coast are covered, making it essential reading – or a wonderful gift – for all those who spend time on Britain's coast. As Countryfile presenter, Tom Heap, says in his Foreword: "These pages are a practical love letter to Britain's waterfront and no seaside holiday home should be without them."
