Book The Old Printer and the Modern Press Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Old Printer and the Modern Press Classic Reprint written by Charles Knight and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old Printer and the Modern Press In 1844 I wrote, and published in my series of 'The Weekly Volume' William Caxton, a Biography. That little work sold as largely as any of the collection. It will not be reprinted, as I have cancelled the stereotype plates. In the present work I have remodelled that biography; rendering it a more compact narrative of the state of knowledge before the invention of printing, of the personal history of the man who brought the invention to England, and of the nature of his efforts to diffuse information amongst his countrymen. This account forms the First Part of this volume. The Second Part embraces a very broad view of the Progress of the Press to our own day, especially in relation to the important subject of Cheap Popular Literature. In treating of the remarkable revolution of our times in the prices of books, I cannot avoid incidentally noticing some of my own labours in that direction. I have done so as slightly as possible; and, I trust, in the impartial spirit of an honest chronicler. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Old Printer and the Modern Press Illustrated Edition

Download or read book The Old Printer and the Modern Press Illustrated Edition written by Charles Knight and published by . This book was released on 2019-11-28 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Knight (1791-1873) was an English publisher, editor and author who published and contributed to works such as The Penny Magazine, The Penny Cyclopaedia and The English Cyclopaedia, and he established the Local Government Chronicle. He was the son of a bookseller and printer to whom he was apprenticed, and on completion of his indentures he took up journalism and had an interest in several newspaper speculations. In 1823, together with friends he had made as publisher of The Etonian (1820-21), he started Knight's Quarterly Magazine which lasted for only six issues but made his name as a publisher and author, beginning a career covering over 40 years. As a publisher he brought out many illustrated editions of standard works, including The Pictorial Shakespeare which appeared in parts from 1838-41, and also undertook the series known as Weekly Volumes in which many famous books appeared for the first time, himself contributing a biography of William Caxton to the series. He was the author of several books including an autobiography, and continued to write to the end of his life. This work was first published in 1854 and includes 14 illustrations.

Book Print and Power in Early Modern Europe 1500 1800

Download or read book Print and Power in Early Modern Europe 1500 1800 written by Nina Lamal and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-06-08 with total page 461 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Print, in the early modern period, could make or break power. This volume addresses one of the most urgent and topical questions in early modern history: how did European authorities use a new medium with such tremendous potential? The eighteen contributors develop new perspectives on the relationship between the rise of print and the changing relationships between subjects and rulers by analysing print’s role in early modern bureaucracy, the techniques of printed propaganda, genres, and strategies of state communication. While print is often still thought of as an emancipating and disruptive force of change in early modern societies, the resulting picture shows how instrumental print was in strengthening existing power structures. Contributors: Renaud Adam, Martin Christ, Jamie Cumby, Arthur der Weduwen, Nora Epstein, Andreas Golob, Helmer Helmers, Jan Hillgärtner, Rindert Jagersma, Justyna Kiliańczyk-Zięba, Nina Lamal, Margaret Meserve, Rachel Midura, Gautier Mingous, Ernesto E. Oyarbide Magaña, Caren Reimann, Chelsea Reutchke, Celyn David Richards, Paolo Sachet, Forrest Strickland, and Ramon Voges.

Book The Printer as Author in Early Modern English Book History

Download or read book The Printer as Author in Early Modern English Book History written by William E. Engel and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-04-26 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to demonstrate how mnemotechnic cultural commonplaces can be used to account for the look, style, and authorized content of some of the most influential books produced in early modern Britain. In his hybrid role as stationer, publisher, entrepreneur, and author, John Day, master printer of England’s Reformation, produced the premier navigation handbook, state-approved catechism and metrical psalms, Book of Martyrs, England’s first printed emblem book, and Queen Elizabeth’s Prayer Book. By virtue of finely honed book trade skills, dogged commitment to evangelical nation-building, and astute business acumen (including going after those who infringed his privileges), Day mobilized the typographical imaginary to establish what amounts to—and still remains—a potent and viable Protestant Memory Art.

Book The British Publishing Industry in the Nineteenth Century

Download or read book The British Publishing Industry in the Nineteenth Century written by David Finkelstein and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-03-14 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume documents how the nineteenth-century British publishing industry responded to and helped shape changes in readership and reading markets in the period. Focusing on broad social, economic and cultural changes, it traces the impact of improvements in transport and communication networks, which dramatically affected the production, distribution and retail of books and periodicals, and the implementation of the Education Acts of 1870 and 1871 which forced publishers to direct their attention to new markets and adopt cheaper publishing formats. The growth of circulating libraries, the revolution in serial and part publication, and the spread of railway bookstalls are among the many topics addressed in this volume which concludes with a section that documents the new pressures of censorship that arose as educational reforms provoked anxieties over the spread of cheap ‘pernicious’ literature.
