Book excerpt: What has happened to the family? The family was once the cornerstone of society and of life, and yet today we see this foundation eroding more and more. There are divisions between parents and children, and unrighteous values, beliefs, and principles have led families down the wrong path. Where can we turn to restore the family and bring families back together again? Knowledge from the Old looks to the one true source—the Bible—to offer Sound, Righteous advice for building families on the bedrock of faith, honor, respect, and love. By focusing on the biblical example of Isaac, Rebekah, and their two sons, Jacob and Esau, author Benoit Dorsette reveals an insightful model for how a family should work—even in today’s world. And with this model in mind, parents and children can know how to overcome all the modern-day challenges that confront us today, such as divorce and disrespectful conduct. The Bible is an instruction manual for husbands, wives, sons, and daughters, and it tells us all how we ought to act. Because the world is always changing and moving down the road of evil, we must rely on the unchanging, perfect Word of Yahweh to guide us along the path of righteousness-a path that leads to a better family life and eternity with our Father in heaven.

Book Secret Knowledge New and Expanded Edition

Download or read book Secret Knowledge New and Expanded Edition written by David Hockney and published by Avery. This book was released on 2006-10-05 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Secret Knowledge created an international sensation when it was first published. David Hockney's theory of how the great works of Western art were created with mirrors and lenses attracted major media attention around the world and generated intense debate in the fields of science and art history. Now, in this expanded edition, Hockney takes his thesis even further, revealing for the first time new findings." "In Secret Knowledge, Hockney explains how he uncovered piece after piece of scientific and visual evidence, each one yielding further revelations about the past. With the benefit of his painter's eye, he examines the major works of art history and reveals the truth of how artists such as Caravaggio, Velazquez, van Eyck, Holbein, da Vinci, and Ingres used mirrors and lenses to help them create their famous masterpieces. For this new edition, Hockney delves still deeper into art history, disclosing the evidence that Renaissance artists also used these methods to develop perspective and chiaroscuro - radically challenging our view of how these two foundations of Western art were established." "Hundreds of paintings and drawings are reproduced and accompanied by Hockney's descriptions. His own photographs and drawings illustrate the various methods used by past artists to capture accurate likenesses and present the results they would have achieved. In addition, extracts from the many historical and modern documents he uncovered offer further intriguing evidence, while correspondence between him and an array of international experts provides an account of the remarkable story as it happened." "Secret Knowledge is not just about the lost techniques of the Old Masters. It is also about now and the future. It is about how we see, treat, and make images today, in an age of computer manipulation."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Knowledge Literacy and Elementary Education in the Old Babylonian Period

Download or read book Knowledge Literacy and Elementary Education in the Old Babylonian Period written by Robert Middeke-Conlin and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-12-11 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines education as a means to explore knowledge and literacy in the Old Babylonian period. It further employs a new method to research these topics. Contrary to numerous existing studies on the subject, the author examines elementary education globally, that is, in pursuit of Old Babylonian education in its entirety. Typically, education is examined in a piecemeal fashion. It's as if education centered on lexicography alone or mathematics alone. This work encompasses a view about educational content and knowledge systems, as opposed to only specific aspects or branches of them. In doing so, a characterization of institution and society is made possible allowing the work to open new general perspectives on Mesopotamian knowledge, literacy, and education.

Download or read book Knowledge for Sale written by Lawrence Busch and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2017-02-10 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How free-market fundamentalists have shifted the focus of higher education to competition, metrics, consumer demand, and return on investment, and why we should change this. A new philosophy of higher education has taken hold in institutions around the world. Its supporters disavow the pursuit of knowledge for its own sake and argue that the only knowledge worth pursuing is that with more or less immediate market value. Every other kind of learning is downgraded, its budget cut. In Knowledge for Sale, Lawrence Busch challenges this market-driven approach. The rationale for the current thinking, Busch explains, comes from neoliberal economics, which calls for reorganizing society around the needs of the market. The market-influenced changes to higher education include shifting the cost of education from the state to the individual, turning education from a public good to a private good subject to consumer demand; redefining higher education as a search for the highest-paying job; and turning scholarly research into a competition based on metrics including number of citations and value of grants. Students, administrators, and scholars have begun to think of themselves as economic actors rather than seekers of knowledge. Arguing for active resistance to this takeover, Busch urges us to burst the neoliberal bubble, to imagine a future not dictated by the market, a future in which there is a more educated citizenry and in which the old dichotomies—market and state, nature and culture, and equality and liberty—break down. In this future, universities value learning and not training, scholarship grapples with society's most pressing problems rather than quick fixes for corporate interests, and democracy is enriched by its educated and engaged citizens.

Book excerpt: We're facing an information overload. With the quick tap of a finger we can access an endless stream of addictive information—sports scores, breaking news, political opinions, streaming TV, the latest Instagram posts, and much more. Accessing information has never been easier—but acquiring wisdom is increasingly difficult. In an effort to help us consume a more balanced, healthy diet of information, Brett McCracken has created the "Wisdom Pyramid." Inspired by the food pyramid model, the Wisdom Pyramid challenges us to increase our intake of enduring, trustworthy sources (like the Bible) while moderating our consumption of less reliable sources (like the Internet and social media). At a time when so much of our daily media diet is toxic and making us spiritually sick, The Wisdom Pyramid suggests that we become healthy and wise when we reorient our lives around God—the foundation of truth and the eternal source of wisdom.
