Book excerpt: The Kalevala is the great Finnish epic, which like the Iliad and the Odyssey, grew out of a rich oral tradition with prehistoric roots. During the first millennium of our era, speakers of Uralic languages (those outside the Indo-European group) who had settled in the Baltic region of Karelia, that straddles the border of eastern Finland and north-west Russia, developed an oral poetry that was to last into the nineteenth century. This poetry provided the basis of the Kalevala. It was assembled in the 1840s by the Finnish scholar Elias Lönnrot, who took `dictation' from the performance of a folk singer, in much the same way as our great collections from the past, from Homeric poems to medieval songs and epics, have probably been set down. Published in 1849, it played a central role in the march towards Finnish independence and inspired some of Sibelius's greatest works.

It is regarded as the national epic of Karelia and Finland and is one of the most significant works of Finnish literature. The compilation was first published in 1849 and consists of 22,795 verses, divided into fifty songs (runes). It was translated into English by J.M. Crawford and published in 1888. | "In the Kalevala, the national epic of Finland, we find many traces of the Archaic philosophy [Secret Doctrine], some clear and luminous, others more veiled and hidden. This epic cannot be less than 3,000 years old; probably it is much older. Though but recently reduced to writing, it has been preserved orally for ages . . . As ably pointed out in the Preface, 'the deeper and more esoteric meaning of the Kalevala points to a contest between Light and Darkness, Good and Evil; the Finns representing the Light and the Good, and the Lapps the Darkness and the Evil.' Compare with this the wars of Ormuzd and Ahriman; of the Aryas and the Rakshasas; of the Pandus and Kurus. . . . The Runes of "the Origin of Iron," the "Finding of the Lost-word," the "Origin of the Serpent," and the "Restoration of the Sun and Moon," are also full of Occultism."-H. P. Blavatsky

Elias Lonnrot (1802–1884) was a Finnish physician, philologist and collector of traditional Finnish oral poetry. It is regarded as the national epic of Finland and is one of the most significant works of Finnish literature. Book excerpt: This book is a reproduction of the first complete English translation of the Kalevala, the epic poem of Finland, which was originally published in 1888 by John Martin Crawford. Crawford-who kept to the original meter, the "archaic trochaic tetrameter" or Kalevala-meter, unlike some later translators-based his translation on Franz Anton Schiefner's earlier (1852) German edition, which was in turn based on Elias Lönnrot's. Lönnrot, who originally compiled the Kalevala, significantly edited the work to form a coherent whole. His publication, "The Kalevala, or old Karelian poems about ancient times of the Finnish people" (also called the Old Kalevala), was published in two volumes in 1835-36.This volume is complete and unabridged.

Book excerpt: The Kalevala: The Epic Poem of Finland is a book and epic poem which the Finn Elias Lonnrot compiled from Finnish and Karelian folklore in the 19th century. It is held to be the national epic of Finland and is traditionally thought of as one of the most significant works of Finnish language literature. Karelians in the Republic of Karelia and other Balto-Finnic speakers also value the work. The Kalevala is credited with some of the inspiration for the national awakening that ultimately led to Finland's independence from Russia in 1917. The name can be interpreted as the "lands of Kaleva." The epic consists of 22,795 verses, divided into fifty cantos or "chapters." Finnish folk poetry was first written down in the 1670s, followed by a few collectors during the next centuries. The poetry was usually sung to tunes built on a pentachord, sometimes assisted by the kantele (a kind of five-string zither). The rhythm could vary but the tunes were arranged in either two or four lines consisting of five beats each. Sometimes the poems were performed antiphonally, sometimes they were a part of a "singing-match" between knowers of the tradition.
