Book The Return of the Dancing Master

Download or read book The Return of the Dancing Master written by Henning Mankell and published by New Press/ORIM. This book was released on 2004-03-25 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the New York Times–bestselling author of the Kurt Wallander novels: An “absorbing” and “chilling” historical mystery “dripping with evil atmosphere” (The Times, London). December 12, 1945. The Third Reich lies in ruins as a British warplane lands in Bückeburg, Germany. A man carrying a small black bag quickly disembarks and travels to Hamelin, where he disappears behind the prison gates. Early the next day, England’s most experienced hangman executes twelve war criminals. Fifty-four years later, retired policeman Herbert Molin is found brutally slaughtered on his remote farm in Härjedalen, Sweden. The police discover strange tracks in the blood on the floor . . . as if someone had been practicing the tango. Stefan Lindman is a young police officer who has just been diagnosed with cancer of the tongue. When he reads about the murder of his former colleague, he decides to travel north and find out what happened. Soon he is enmeshed in a puzzling investigation with no witnesses and no discernible motives. Terrified of the illness that could take his life, Lindman becomes more and more reckless as he uncovers the links between Molin’s death, World War II, and an underground neo-Nazi network. Mankell’s impeccably researched historical thriller is “a worthy successor to the Wallander whodunits” (The Sunday Telegraph). “[Mankell] never fails to find a deep vein of humanity within the perpetually furrowed brows of his troubled cops.” —Booklist

Book Modern Dancing and Dancers Classic Reprint

Download or read book Modern Dancing and Dancers Classic Reprint written by John Ernest Crawford Flitch and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-20 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Dancing and Dancers IT is not unlikely that when the art historian of the future comes to treat of the artistic activity of the first decade of the twentieth century, he will remark as one of its most notable accomplishments a renaissance of the art of the Dance. That this renaissance is an accomplished fact, is a matter of common knowledge. Within a relatively short period there have appeared several great dancers, who must necessarily have been preparing themselves for a considerable time previously to their appearance, yet as it were in secret, without cognisance of one another, with a common aim, but without a common plan. Con temporaries in time, they have been as far removed in space as the East is from the West. In all movements which touch the spirit, this circumstance of the simultaneous but independent manifesta tion of a common impulse is at once the most general and the most unaccountable. The still small voice whispers into space and those of a delicate hearing hear and respond. We content ourselves by repeating the explanation, which is no explanation, that the movement is in the air. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of the Dance When I decided to publish in book form the pictures of the dance which I had made during the last few years, my object was not to make a book of personalities. I merely wanted to show some of the phases of modern dance tendencies that could be recorded in a pictorially interesting manner. This, therefore, is meant to be just a picture book, permanently recording some, thing of the fugitive charm of rhythmic motion, significant gesz ture and brilliant color which the dance has once more brought into our lives. The pictures, arranged simply in groups, are even without titles. What they are intended to convey would not have been helped by labels. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dancing, Ancient and Modern All nature teaches rhythm, which manifests itself in the waves and tides, in the vibrations of light and sound, in the harmonious move ments Of the heavenly spheres and when man began to try to express his feelings by the rhythmic movements Of his body, he was merely taking his part in the everlasting Dance of the Universe. It is perhaps difficult to realise that dancing, as an outlet of emotion, is prior to music - that in fact, the first music was composed or ex temporised in order to accompany dancing yet the origin of many of our oldest musical terms shows that this is the case. For instance. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An important modern exponent of Asian dance, Pandit Chitresh Das brought kathak to the United States in 1970. The North Indian classical dance has since become an important art form within the greater Indian diaspora. Yet its adoption outside of India raises questions about what happens to artistic practices when we separate them from their broader cultural contexts. A Guru's Journey provides an ethnographic study of the dance form in the San Francisco Bay Area community formed by Das. Sarah Morelli, a kathak dancer and one of Das's former students, investigates issues in teaching, learning, and performance that developed around Das during his time in the United States. In modifying kathak's form and teaching for Western students, Das negotiates questions of Indianness and non-Indianness, gender, identity, and race. Morelli lays out these issues for readers with the goal of deepening their knowledge of kathak aesthetics, technique, and theory. She also shares the intricacies of footwork, facial expression in storytelling, and other aspects of kathak while tying them to the cultural issues that inform the dance.

Book Dancing as an Art and Pastime Classic Reprint

Download or read book Dancing as an Art and Pastime Classic Reprint written by Edward Scott and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-20 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dancing as an Art and Pastime The purpose and plan of the present volume are set forth in the introductory chapter 5 but it seems only right that I Should express my thanks to those pupils who have been 'kind enough to aid me in illustrating the various attitudes that may or may not properly be assumed in dancing. If the positions described as good appear in some cases to fall short of the ideal of perfection, it Should be remembered by those disposed to be hypercritical, that there is a great difference between assuming a difficult attitude momentarily in dancing, and remaining in one without movement, sufficiently long _for even a rapid photograph to be taken. It was found that in this case a really instantaneous process would be impracticable, and many good negatives of groups were spoilt through a Slight movement on the part of one of the subjects. Beyond this, the work of reproduction necessarily involves a Slight loss of detail. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Folk Dancing Classic Reprint

Download or read book Folk Dancing Classic Reprint written by Grace Imogene Fox and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-19 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Folk Dancing The first essential for a successful folk dancing experience lies in the teacher him self. He must -be enthusiastic and sympathetic. He must be tolerant and patient with those who are slow to learn, for occasionally an individual feels he has no sense of rhythm and is discouraged because he does not enjoy the dances. It is the teacher's task to develop, not a sense of rhythm - for every normal human being has that - but the mus cular coordination necessary to express the rhythm. Everyone responds to rhythm, though the response for some persons is only within. There are many ways to help the individual develop a muscular response to rhythm. He may dance with the teacher or with a student who dances well so that wrong patterns do not become fixed. He may be given special instruction, at which time steps may be taken Slowly until the patterns become learned, then gradually increased until the dance is done in the correct tempo. The teacher Should give as much individual instruction as possible at the beginning of the folk dance unit in order that Slow learners may keep up with the group and not become discouraged. Each teacher will develop his own individual technique for presenting a dance, for starting the musician and the dancers. One much used way to Start the dance is to say, Ready with the music - and. Simultaneously with the word and the accompanist and the dancers begin the dance. Inaccuracy in rhythmic response results if dancers are Slow in beginning the first Step because they wait to hear the first notes before starting the dance. Some music is arranged in such a way that there 13 an anacrusis, a pick up note. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
