Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The acclaimed novel of growing up in Chicago’s Jewish ghetto in the shadow of WWI: “A landmark in the development of the realistic novel” (Harold Strauss, The New York Times). Chicago reporter and author of Compulsion, Meyer Levin won critical acclaim with this debut novel based on his own coming of age in the west side of Chicago. It follows the lives of nineteen teenagers—eleven boys and eight girls—who grow up together in the same working class Jewish Chicago neighborhood. The children of immigrants, these young people strive to forge their own paths in the aftermath of World War I and the struggles of the Great Depression. With compassion, intimacy, and photographic detail, Levin captures not only the lives of this unique “bunch,” but also the life of a generation from the Roaring Twenties through the New Deal and the Chicago World’s Fair. First published in 1937, The Old Bunch “brilliantly succeeds in taking the reader on a memorable tour of the world in which the old bunch lived” (The New York Times). “Written in good hard-driving colloquial prose, full of sharp characterizations . . . A very fine novel.” —New Republic

Book excerpt: Meyer Levin was a Chicago-born Jewish author. His best-known book is"Compulsion", which is a novelization of the notorious Loeb and Leopoldmurder case of 1924. Levin was in a special position to tell the story, because he was personally acquainted with the perpetrators. Levin isalso famous for bringing Anne Frank's diary to light. But "The OldBunch" may be his greatest work. "The Old Bunch" was written in the mid-1930's, and it tells the talesof the kids of a Chicago Jewish ghetto coming of age and stepping outinto the world. It's presumably something of a fantasy autobiography, echoing Levin's own adventures -- Levin was born in 1905,and the events in this book take place beginning in the year 1921 (whenthe "bunch" is graduating from school), and running through to 1934. The book is compelling for its individual stories and for its livingwindow into times past. Because it was written prior to the horrors ofWWII, it's a very pure view of the pre-war era. (Anything written laterwill necessarily be done with hindsight, and will likely de-emphasize"unimportant" details in favor of those that connect to major warevents.) But the history is merely a fascinating byproduct of the vividhuman stories that fill the pages. "The Old Bunch" is surprisingly unknown today, which is a shame. Thisreally is one of the great novels, in a class with Tolstoy andSteinbeck. It conveys the entirety of the era: The people, the culture, the economics, Chicago politics (very dirty!), with a global perspectiveas well (some characters travel to Europe and Palestine). It covers theRoaring Twenties, Prohibition, the Great Depression, and the New Deal.To read the book is to live and breathe in these bygone days. Most importantly, Meyer Levin depicts events without agenda orjudgment. Characters may be Democrats or Republicans or workers orbosses or religionists or atheists or many other things, but all areportrayed with depth, and none are simple heroes or villains or symbols. These are, in the end, tales about the very personal and individualtransitions to adulthood, and the elusive quest for wisdom. It is thesame challenge that every generation must face. "The Old Bunch" was critically acclaimed and went through numerousprint editions, but it eventually passed into the public domain and wastemporarily forgotten. A Wall Street Journal article in 2012 ("Destiny'sChildren", by Joseph Epstein) sparked a revival of interest, and RanchoLazarus Publications is proud to present a new edition, accurately rendered andtrue to the original text, and with the addition of occasional footnotesto clarify details of historical accuracy that the modern reader may nothave on tap. With almost 700 pages of text (the original hardback bookran to almost 1000 pages), this is an epic novel. But far from beingoverlong, it's the sort of reading that leaves you wishing there wasmore. "Written in good hard-driving colloquial prose, full of sharpcharacterizations. . . A very fine novel." -- New Republic "A landmark -- vivid and exciting reading. It brilliantly succeeds intaking the reader on a memorable tour of the world in which the oldbunch lived." -- The New York Times

Book excerpt: From a prize-winning poet, a new collection that chronicles a weekend in the life of a group of friends coming of age in East Harlem at the dawn of the hip-hop era Willie Perdomo, a native of East Harlem, has won praise as a hip, playful, historically engaged poet whose restlessly lyrical language mixes "city life with a sense of the transcendent" (NPR.org). In his fourth collection, The Crazy Bunch, Perdomo returns to his beloved neighborhood to create a vivid, kaleidoscopic portrait of a "crew" coming of age in East Harlem at the beginning of the 1990s. In poems written in couplets, vignettes, sketches, riffs, and dialogue, Perdomo recreates a weekend where surviving members of the crew recall a series of tragic events: "That was the summer we all tried to fly. All but one of us succeeded."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the fiftieth anniversary of the film, W.K. Stratton's definitive history of the making of The Wild Bunch, named one of the greatest Westerns of all time by the American Film Institute. Sam Peckinpah's film The Wild Bunch is the story of a gang of outlaws who are one big steal from retirement. When their attempted train robbery goes awry, the gang flees to Mexico and falls in with a brutal general of the Mexican Revolution, who offers them the job of a lifetime. Conceived by a stuntman, directed by a blacklisted director, and shot in the sand and heat of the Mexican desert, the movie seemed doomed. Instead, it became an instant classic with a dark, violent take on the Western movie tradition. In The Wild Bunch, W.K. Stratton tells the fascinating history of the making of the movie and documents for the first time the extraordinary contribution of Mexican and Mexican-American actors and crew members to the movie's success. Shaped by infamous director Sam Peckinpah, and starring such visionary actors as William Holden, Ernest Borgnine, Edmond O'Brien, and Robert Ryan, the movie was also the product of an industry and a nation in transition. By 1968, when the movie was filmed, the studio system that had perpetuated the myth of the valiant cowboy in movies like The Searchers had collapsed, and America was riled by Vietnam, race riots, and assassinations. The Wild Bunch spoke to America in its moment, when war and senseless violence seemed to define both domestic and international life. The Wild Bunch is an authoritative history of the making of a movie and the era behind it.

Book excerpt: A collection of chilling and prescient stories about ecological apocalypse and the merging of human and machine. Welcome to Moderan, world of the future. Here perpetual war is waged by furious masters fighting from Strongholds well stocked with “arsenals of fear” and everyone is enamored with hate. The devastated earth is coated by vast sheets of gray plastic, while humans vie to replace more and more of their own “soft parts” with steel. What need is there for nature when trees and flowers can be pushed up through holes in the plastic? Who requires human companionship when new-metal mistresses are waiting? But even a Stronghold master can doubt the catechism of Moderan. Wanderers, poets, and his own children pay visits, proving that another world is possible. “As if Whitman and Nietzsche had collaborated,” wrote Brian Aldiss of David R. Bunch’s work. Originally published in science-fiction magazines in the 1960s and ’70s, these mordant stories, though passionately sought by collectors, have been unavailable in a single volume for close to half a century. Like Anthony Burgess in A Clockwork Orange, Bunch coined a mind-bending new vocabulary. He sought not to divert readers from the horror of modernity but to make us face it squarely. This volume includes eleven previously uncollected Moderan stories.
