This distinctive and extroverted voice of an undisciplined showman is presented with an introduction and epilogue by his widow, Barbara. This up close and personal perspective of the band's early days and late nights--including an instance where he locks himself out of the studio in full drag while tripping on LSD--chronicles the glorious, glamorous era of high times, high drama, and low comedy that captures the music, the style, and the life of the all-too-brief existence of the New York Dolls.

Book Brown Beauty

  • Author : Laila Haidarali

Download or read book Brown Beauty written by Laila Haidarali and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2018-09-25 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examines how the media influenced ideas of race and beauty among African American women from the Harlem Renaissance to World War II. Between the Harlem Renaissance and the end of World War II, a complicated discourse emerged surrounding considerations of appearance of African American women and expressions of race, class, and status. Brown Beauty considers how the media created a beauty ideal for these women, emphasizing different representations and expressions of brown skin. Haidarali contends that the idea of brown as a “respectable shade” was carefully constructed through print and visual media in the interwar era. Throughout this period, brownness of skin came to be idealized as the real, representational, and respectable complexion of African American middle class women. Shades of brown became channels that facilitated discussions of race, class, and gender in a way that would develop lasting cultural effects for an ever-modernizing world. Building on an impressive range of visual and media sources—from newspapers, journals, magazines, and newsletters to commercial advertising—Haidarali locates a complex, and sometimes contradictory, set of cultural values at the core of representations of women, envisioned as “brown-skin.” She explores how brownness affected socially-mobile New Negro women in the urban environment during the interwar years, showing how the majority of messages on brownness were directed at an aspirant middle-class. By tracing brown’s changing meanings across this period, and showing how a visual language of brown grew into a dynamic racial shorthand used to denote modern African American womanhood, Brown Beauty demonstrates the myriad values and judgments, compromises and contradictions involved in the social evaluation of women. This book is an eye-opening account of the intense dynamics between racial identity and the influence mass media has on what, and who we consider beautiful. Her real mother and father are out there somewhere, and Ruby becomes determined to find them. Venturing into the forest with nothing but a suitcase and the company of her only true friend—the imaginary Shadow Boy—Ruby discovers a group of siblings who live alone in the woods. The children take her in, and while they offer the closest Ruby’s ever had to a family, Ruby begins to suspect that they might need her even more than she needs them. Told from shifting timelines, and the alternating perspectives of teenage Ruby; her mother, Anna; and even the Shadow Boy, The Doll Funeral is a dazzling follow-up to Kate Hamer’s breakout debut, The Girl in the Red Coat, and a gripping, exquisitely mysterious novel about the connections that remain after a family has been broken apart.

Download or read book No More Time For Sorrow written by Dr. Robert Beeman and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2010-05-14 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rogue nations with a nuclear punch might not be able to deliver their bombs here in the Homeland, but they will shop their wares to anyone who can! Terrorists will make their second great attack on the Homeland with nuclear weapons. The story tells who will do it, how it will be done, most likely where, and when. This is a war story about what happens when mommy and daddy take over defense of the Homeland, about a country run by people in such denial that only a second mass death of innocent Americans could jog them out of their ideological stupor. It's a story of courage and cowardice, the courage to stand head-up against power and the cowardice to sanction the murder of innocents for political gain. It's a love story about men who love God so much that they're willing to sacrifice anyone but themselves, including their own Believers — about Americans who love power so much that they're willing to sacrifice their countrymen as long as their policies remain unquestioned — and about real Americans who love their country so much that they offer to sacrifice themselves in her defense. It's a teaching story containing lessons about ideology trumping survival, political correctness trumping plain common sense, and agenda trumping truth, with a little character-building on the side. But above all else, it's a story of Duty holding apart then welding together some very, very good people in the defense of America. Some of the bad guys win; some of the good guys lose. Terrorists kill, bravery exalts, fuses ignite, and lovers find a way. And it's a story about simple, average Americans watching their country's descent into danger and wondering why in the world common sense doesn't prevail — Americans kind of like you and me.
