Book Maneuver Warfare Handbook

Download or read book Maneuver Warfare Handbook written by William S Lind and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-30 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maneuver warfare, often controversial and requiring operational and tactical innovation, poses perhaps the most important doctrinal questions currently facing the conventional military forces of the U.S. Its purpose is to defeat the enemy by disrupting the opponent's ability to react, rather than by physical destruction of forces. This book develops and explains the theory of maneuver warfare and offers specific tactical, operational, and organizational recommendations for improving ground combat forces. The authors translate concepts too often vaguely stated by manuever warfare advocates into concrete doctrine. Although the book uses the Marine Corps as a model, the concepts, tactics, and doctrine discussed apply to any ground combat force.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication is about winning in combat. Winning requires many things: excellence in techniques, an appreciation of the enemy, exemplary leadership, battlefield judgment, and focused combat power. Yet these factors by themselves do not ensure success in battle. Many armies, both winners and losers, have possessed many or all of these attributes. When we examine closely the differences between victor and vanquished, we draw one conclusion. Success went to the armies whose leaders, senior and junior, could best focus their efforts-their skills and their resources-toward a decisive end. Their success arose not merely from excellence in techniques, procedures, and material but from their leaders' abilities to uniquely and effectively combine them. Winning in combat depends upon tactical leaders who can think creatively and act decisively.

Book The Official Us Marine Corps Operations Handbook

Download or read book The Official Us Marine Corps Operations Handbook written by Us Marine Corps and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2017-07-22 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: KNOW HOW THE WORLD'S MOST EFFECTIVE EXPEDITIONARY FORCE REALLY WORKS, FIGHTS AND WINS! FULL-SIZE FORMAT - biggest edition on Amazon: giant 8.5" x 11" size - clear, detailed print, large margins for notes. Current 2017 edition, Complete & Unabridged. "Batteries last hours, books last decades. Get the print edition!" Operations provides a complete insight into how the U.S. Marines' warfighting philosophy translates into real action, describing how Marine Air Ground Task Force (MAGTF) elements are employed in a wide range of global crisis-response missions. Created by the USMC's finest strategic minds, tried and tested by real-world battle, Operations is also an incredibly valuable text for anyone who wishes to learn how to plan, deploy assets, run operations, and achieve success through the exercise of superior organizational ability, expedient decision-making, and the selective application of force. This current edition supersedes the pre-2011 version. OPERATIONS CONTAINS: THE MARINE CORPS IN NATIONAL DEFENSE MARINE CORPS FORCES AND EXPEDITIONARY OPERATIONS CONDUCTING EXPEDITIONARY OPERATIONS MILITARY ENGAGEMENT, SECURITY COOPERATION AND DETERRENCE CRISIS RESPONSE AND LIMITED CONTINGENCY OPERATIONS MAJOR OPERATIONS AND CAMPAIGNS COUNTERINSURGENCY OPERATIONS DEFENSIVE OPERATIONS OFFENSIVE OPERATIONS OTHER TACTICAL OPERATIONS RECONNAISSANCE AND SECURITY OPERATIONS STABILITY OPERATIONS SUSTAINMENT OPERATIONS APPENDICES GLOSSARY REFERENCES FROM THE FOREWORD: Developed just prior to the momentous events of 11 September 2001, the original edition reflected the language and operational constructs prevalent within joint doctrine at that time. Key among them were the notions of "war" versus "military operations other than war," as well as the unstated, but imbedded, belief that the ability to defeat a conventional adversary granted the ability to succeed against "lesser" foes. Since then, Marines have successfully conducted a wide variety of expeditionary missions, including the projection of a landing force from amphibious ships in the Indian Ocean more than 400 miles inland into Afghanistan; a mechanized attack from Kuwait to Baghdad, followed by prolonged counterinsurgency operations to pacify major portions of Iraq; and numerous crisis response operations worldwide. The diversity of operations, the expanded application of Marine Corps capabilities, and the changing lexicon all illustrate how our collective American understanding of the security era, our national strategy, our organizations, and our employment of military power have evolved during nearly ten years of conflict. Accordingly, this new edition reflects that evolution. Marine Corps commanders and staffs at all levels should read, study, and be thoroughly conversant with this book. The notion that "words matter," is embedded throughout this publication, which defines key terms to ensure Marines speak a common operational language. Yet these factors by themselves do not ensure success in battle. Many armies, both winners and losers, have possessed many or all of these attributes. Winning in combat depends upon tactical leaders who can think creatively and act decisively. This book pertains equally to all Marine leaders, whether their duties entail combat service support, combat support, or combat arms. It applies to the Marine air-ground task force commander as well as the squadron commander and the fire team leader. All Marines face tactical decisions in battle regardless of their roles. Tactical leaders must develop and hone their warfighting skills through study and practice. This publication serves as a guide for that professional development. It addresses the theory of tactics and its application in a chaotic and uncertain environment. The concepts and ideas within this publication are battle-tested. Throughout our history, one of the most important reasons for the success of the United States Marine Corps has been the military skill of our leaders at every level of command. Through their tactical skill and battlefield judgment, our commanders achieved tactical and operational advantage at the decisive time and place.

Book The Official Us Marine Corps Campaigning Handbook

Download or read book The Official Us Marine Corps Campaigning Handbook written by Us Marine Corps and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2017-08-08 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: RISE ABOVE THE FOG OF WAR TO ACHIEVE YOUR OBJECTIVE FULL-SIZE FORMAT - **biggest edition available anywhere** giant 8.5" x 11" size means clear, detailed print. Current 2017 edition, Complete & Unabridged "Batteries last hours, books last decades. Get the print edition!" "No plan of battle survives contact with the enemy," wrote German strategist Helmuth von Moltke. Thus, the operational level is where lofty strategic goals hit the dirt of the real world, and where where wars are won or lost on their fighters' ability to conceive, focus upon and exploit a variety of tactical actions to achieve a strategic aim, all the while bearing changing realities in mind. It is essential for each Marine of every rank to think operationally. Campaigning addresses this operational level, providing the doctrinal basis for military campaigning in the Marine Corps, particularly as it pertains to a Marine commander or warfighter within a Marine Air-Ground Task Force (MAGTF) participating in the campaign. Campaigning also promises a rewardingly valuable experience for readers of all backgrounds who wish to discover and apply these hard-won lessons of proven battlefield success to their own lives. FROM THE FOREWORD: Tactical success in combat does not of itself guarantee victory in war. What matters ultimately in war is STRATEGIC SUCCESS: attainment of our political aims and the protection of our national interests. The operational level of war provides the linkage between tactics and strategy. With that thought as our point of departure, this publication discusses the intermediate, operational level of war and the military campaign which is the vehicle for organizing tactical actions to achieve strategic objectives. This publication makes frequent use of historical examples. These examples are intended to illustrate teachings that have universal relevance and enduring applicability. No matter what the scope and nature of the next mission-general war or military operations other than war-the concepts and the thought processes described in this publication will apply. This publication is designed primarily for Marine Air-Ground Task Force commanders and their staffs and for officers serving on joint and combined staffs. However, commanders at all levels of any military organization require a broad perspective, an understanding of the interrelationships among the levels of war, and knowledge of the methods for devising and executing progressive series of actions in pursuit of a distant objective in the face of hostile resistance. Marine officers of any grade and specialty can easily find themselves working-either directly or indirectly-for senior leaders with strategic or operational responsibilities. Those leaders need subordinates who understand their problems and their intentions. Therefore, as with MCDP 1*, I expect all officers to read and reread this publication, understand its message, and apply it. C.C. MARINE RECON Reconnaissance units are the commander’s eyes and ears on the battlefield. They are task organized as a highly trained six man team capable of conducting specific missions behind enemy lines. Book excerpt: Warfighting is an authentic American philosophy of action that will thrill the millions of fans of SunTzu's The Art of War and Musashi's The Book of Five Rings. This modern classic of strategy and philosophy is the quintessential guide to prevailing in competitive situations, be it war, work, play, or daily living. Sometimes life is war and sometimes business is war and sometimes you need to call in the Marines. Over the past two hundred years, the Marines have developed a reputation for getting the job done—fearlessly, boldly, and taking no prisoners. What better role model for the hidden warriors in ourselves? What better advice to call on when the stakes are high and sensitivity just isn't going to work? Written in 1989 as a philosophical and strategic guide-book for the US. Marine Corps, Warfighting is a worthy successor to SunTzu's The Art Of War. With clarity, brevity, and wisdom, it describes the basic forces at work in every competitive situation whether on the field of battle, in the boardroom, or in the courtroom. With twentieth-century technology and its emphasis on speed and versatility, the rules of war and competition have changed. Warfighting's exploration of maneuver warfare takes readers beyond Sun Tzu's classic lessons and provides them a more thorough understanding of what it takes to fight and win in the modern world. Currency's edition of Warfighting features interviews with famous former Marines including F. Lee Bailey, Ed McMahon, and Donald Regan. They tell how they have used the Marine Corps' battle strategies of strength and straightforwardness as their secret weapons in every confrontation, whether at a corporate, departmental, or personal level.
