Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Official Report of the Church Congress, Held at Reading, on October 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th, 1883 It is due to the Publishers, Messrs. Bemrose Sons, Derby, that I should mention the extreme care shown by their staff of compositors. The general accuracy of the first proofs was remarkable, and very considerably lessened my own labours. I need say no more; the Volume speaks for itself, when it is remembered that scarcely seven weeks have passed since the Congress was held. For myself, I may perhaps be allowed to say just this, that I under took the editorial work this year because I could not say No to the urgent request of my good friend, and fellow-worker of last year, Mr. H. H. Bemrose. The work of revision has been done under exceptional difficulties, which many of my readers will understand when I say that the charge of a parish of over souls has been, of course, my first concern, and the editorial work in consequence relegated to overtime. Still, I trust that there will be found but few inaccuracies, and for these I must ask the indulgence of both Authors and Readers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Official Report of the Church Congress: Held at Portsmouth, on October 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th, 1885 But flu impress stamped upon the Congress by the political campaign which was proceeding was the emphasis that it gave to the importance of the subject of Church Defence. The three noble sermons with which the Congress opened, notably the Bishop of Carlisle's, gave the note which rang out steady and strong through the length of the four days' session. Yet, perhaps, the best and stoutest defence the Church made is found in the programme of the Congress. Let anyone read over carefully the list of subjects discussed any year, and reflect that these discussions present only a small portion of the varied interests and manifold activities of the Church of England, and he will obtain some idea of the extent of the Church's work, the vigour of the Church's life, and the fidelity of the Church to her Master and to the mission He has committed to her. And if it be said that the dissensions within the Church of England are so serious that she is as a house divided against itself, and would fall but for the bracing of the State's powerful arm, let such an one analyse the list of Readers and Speakers (zoo or more), take note how each school of thought, aye, how almost every shade of Opinion, finds expression upon the Congress platform, and learn from the peace, and unity, with abundant life (specially marked at Portsmouth) manifested in these great gatherings of Churchmen, how comprehensive is England's Church, how wide her embrace, how free and generous her love! Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Official Report of the Church Congress: Held at Manchester, on October 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th, 1888 The result has amply justified the action of the Executive Committee. The Church Congress has taken, as it were, a new lease of life in the self-same great centre of population in which, a quarter of a century ago, it was first introduced to the notice of the masses of the people. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Official Report of the Church Congress: Held at Norwich, October, 1895 A comparison of the programmes of 1865 and 1895 still further marks the growth of the Congress. In 186 5 eleven meetings (six being sectional) were held on three days; in 1895, twenty-six meetings (fifteen being sectional) were held on four days. It appears to have been an unwritten law of Congress in its early days to limit the number of papers and prepared addresses to four, viz., two readers and two speakers. In recent years the programme has been heavily weighted with invited readers and speakers; and, mainly in consequence of this, the discussions of the subjects by voluntary speakers have often been very limited. A good deal of criticism has been directed against this comparatively recent innovation, and Subjects' Committees in future years will be wise if they aim at meeting objections which have been very emphatically expressed, and are undoubtedly widely felt. Again, in recent years the subjects selected have been elaborately dissected and subdivided; whereas in earlier years they were briefly designated in general terms.
