Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Official Report of the Church Congress: Held at Derby, October, 1882 No pains have been spared by the Editor and his colleagues to obtain, and to produce, a complete and accurate account of the discussions and proceedings at the Derby Church Congress, as a permanent record. In editing the Report for the Secretaries and Committee, my first duty is to acknowledge, on their behalf, the very valuable services which the Official Reporter (mr. C. Basil Cooke) and the Publishers (messrs. Bemrose and Sons) have rendered. It is to the fore thought, promptitude, and care of Mr. Cooke, who has also acted as Sub-editor, and to the perfect arrangements made by Mr. H. H. Bemrose, that both the completeness of the volume and its unusually early issue must be attributed. The very efficient help given by these gentlemen reduced my editorial labours to a minimum, and turned an otherwise exacting and anxious task into a comparatively light and pleasant duty. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Official Report of the Church Congress: Held at Cardiff, October, 1889 I am under many obligations to the Readers and Speakers who have kindly submitted to the editorial pressure, and almost without an exception have promptly returned transcripts and proofs after correction. I am also, again, much indebted to Mr. C. Basil Cooke, the Official Reporter, for the services he has rendered me in the work of revision. A specialite of this year's Report is a sermon in the Welsh language, preached by the Lord Bishop of S. Asaph, at a Special Service in Llandaff Cathedral, on Tuesday in Congress week. It is printed at the end of Report (page together with the Welsh hymn (p. 574) sung at this service, and again at Wednesday morning's service in the Park Hall. Download or read book The Official Report of the Church Congress Held at Reading on October 2nd 3rd 4th and 5th 1883 Classic Reprint written by C. Dunkley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-25 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Official Report of the Church Congress, Held at Reading, on October 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th, 1883 It is due to the Publishers, Messrs. Bemrose Sons, Derby, that I should mention the extreme care shown by their staff of compositors. The general accuracy of the first proofs was remarkable, and very considerably lessened my own labours. I need say no more; the Volume speaks for itself, when it is remembered that scarcely seven weeks have passed since the Congress was held. For myself, I may perhaps be allowed to say just this, that I under took the editorial work this year because I could not say No to the urgent request of my good friend, and fellow-worker of last year, Mr. H. H. Bemrose. The work of revision has been done under exceptional difficulties, which many of my readers will understand when I say that the charge of a parish of over souls has been, of course, my first concern, and the editorial work in consequence relegated to overtime. Still, I trust that there will be found but few inaccuracies, and for these I must ask the indulgence of both Authors and Readers. Book The Churches and the Working Classes

Download or read book The Churches and the Working Classes written by Patricia Midgley and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2012-12-21 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contrary to our perception of the centrality of the churches in English life in the nineteenth century, the disappointing results of the 1851 Religious Census led religious leaders to seek a variety of ways to increase religious allegiance as the century progressed. The apparent apathy and lack of interest in formal religion on the part of the working classes was particularly galling, and the various denominations tried hard to attract them through evangelical missions as well as social and charitable ventures which sometimes competed with religious concerns, to the latter’s detriment. This book traces the motivations, concerns and efforts of the churches, particularly in the period between 1870 and 1920, and the ambivalent responses of ordinary people. The Education Act of 1870 led to the churches losing their hold on the education of the young, a consequence foreseen by many church leaders, but unable to be prevented. By 1920 it was apparent that the churches’ optimism regarding an increased role with a war-weary population would not be fulfilled. The focus is on the city of Leeds, representative of the industrialised urban areas with burgeoning populations which proved to be such a challenge to the churches, at the same time stimulating them to ever-greater efforts.
