Book Transformative Experiences in College

Download or read book Transformative Experiences in College written by Neal Christopherson and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2020-11-24 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transformative Experiences in College: Connections and Community explores the intersection of two concepts: transformative experience in college and the communities in which students learn. Emerging from a five-year longitudinal interview study tracking a panel of 75 students through four years at a selective liberal arts college, this book provides a rich depiction of how aspects of the college community (and the relationships developed within that community) create opportunities for transformative experiences that lead to personal and academic growth. Neal Christopherson argues that transformative experiences in college are primarily the results of interactions with other people and with a broader campus community, documenting the ways in which relationships with faculty, experiences in courses, interaction with peers, and the general institutional environment can generate these experiences. Christopherson also touches on extracurricular and co-curricular activities, the importance of a healthy environment for interacting with difference, and how students transition out of the institution. Scholars of education, sociology, and communication will find this book particularly useful.

Download or read book The Harmon and Harriet Kelley Collection of African American Art written by Harmon Kelley and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ." . . this collection has a narrative and descriptive thrust that is centered on the social and economic history of African Americans in the United States and presents a kaleidoscopic view of Black life and cultural history. The insistent integrity of the works included reflects a deep understanding of African American social values and celebrates with pride both a humble and a noble existence." -- Corrine Jennings African American art is reaching a wider audience today than ever before, as major exhibitions tour museums around the country. Inspired by the exhibit Hidden Heritage: Afro-American Art, 1800-1950, Harmon and Harriet Kelley began collecting African American art in 1987 and have amassed a collection that represents a broad range of genres and artists from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Profusely illustrated with color and black-and-white plates, this catalog accompanies a traveling exhibition of the Kelley collection, comprised of 124 works by 70 artists, including Edward M. Bannister, Elizabeth Catlett, William H. Johnson, Emma Lee Moss, Charles E. Porter, Henry O. Tanner, and Dox Thrash. Essays on "Nineteenth-Century African American Art," "Twentieth-Century Artists," and "American Art and the Black Folk Artist" build an illuminating context for the works, restoring them to their rightful places in the history of American art.

This book was released on 2017-07-25 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The focus of this volume is on the work of Institutional Researchers in a small college or university (SCUs) setting. At an SCU, the goal of the IR office is to balance the bureaucratic tendencies of data-driven decision making with the need for collegiality and collaboration. Drawing on numerous examples, it illustrates how IR professionals can leverage their positionality within the institution to design data flows to answer questions by serving as convergent thinkers, connecting disjointed systems and requests. This volume: identifies the challenges that small IR offices face reinforces the idea of collegiality as a defining feature of small IR offices discusses several principles for using data about teaching and learning explores the effects of low response rates in survey data and the effects of nonresponse bias demonstrates the importance of collaborative efforts in enacting change proposes a model of policy development focused on student success presents an effective model of SCU IR office development This is the 173rd volume of this Jossey-Bass quarterly report series. Timely and comprehensive, New Directions for Institutional Research provides planners and administrators in all types of academic institutions with guidelines in such areas as resource coordination, information analysis, program evaluation, and institutional management.

Book Addressing the Nation s Changing Needs for Biomedical and Behavioral Scientists

Download or read book Addressing the Nation s Changing Needs for Biomedical and Behavioral Scientists written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2000-08-16 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As biomedical and behavioral research progresses into new areas, the number of scientists active in various fields rises and falls, and the health needs of the U.S. population evolve, it is important to ensure that the preparation of future investigators reflects these changes. This book addresses these topics by considering questions such as the following: What is the current supply of biomedical and behavioral scientists? How is future demand for scientists likely to be affected by factors such as advances in research, trends in the employment of scientists, future research funding, and changes in health care delivery? What are the best ways to prepare prospective investigators to meet future needs in scientific research? In the course of addressing these questions, this volume examines the number of investigators trained every year, patterns of hiring by universities and industry, and the age of the scientific workforce in different fields, and makes recommendations for the number of scientists that should be trained in the years ahead. This book also considers the diversity of the research workforce and the importance of providing prospective scientists with the skills to successfully collaborate with investigators in related fields, and offers suggestions for how government and universities should structure their research training programs differently in the future.
