Book excerpt: The office is dead. Long live the office. Despite decades of predictions that the office is on the verge of extinction, it is surviving and thriving. Of course, things are changing. And changing fast. Digital technologies are transforming not only the work we do, but also the ways our workplaces are designed, built and operated. Automation and AI mean that some jobs will no longer exist whilst others will be created. But the very essence of the workplace — human interaction and collaboration, remains as necessary as ever. In fact, it is the human focus that is driving this new age, with four generations now in the workplace together for the first time. Taking an interdisciplinary approach, this book discusses the impacts of these changes on the future of work and workplace. The latest technologies are also explored from voice and digital twins, to new materials such as graphene and battery-powered buildings.

Book The Future of Architecture in 100 Buildings

Download or read book The Future of Architecture in 100 Buildings written by Marc Kushner and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2015-03-10 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The founder of Architizer.com and practicing architect draws on his unique position at the crossroads of architecture and social media to highlight 100 important buildings that embody the future of architecture. We’re asking more of architecture than ever before; the response will define our future. A pavilion made from paper. A building that eats smog. An inflatable concert hall. A research lab that can walk through snow. We’re entering a new age in architecture—one where we expect our buildings to deliver far more than just shelter. We want buildings that inspire us while helping the environment; buildings that delight our senses while serving the needs of a community; buildings made possible both by new technology and repurposed materials. Like an architectural cabinet of wonders, this book collects the most innovative buildings of today and tomorrow. The buildings hail from all seven continents (to say nothing of other planets), offering a truly global perspective on what lies ahead. Each page captures the soaring confidence, the thoughtful intelligence, the space-age wonder, and at times the sheer whimsy of the world’s most inspired buildings—and the questions they provoke: Can a building breathe? Can a skyscraper be built in a day? Can we 3D-print a house? Can we live on the moon? Filled with gorgeous imagery and witty insight, this book is an essential and delightful guide to the future being built around us—a future that matters more, and to more of us, than ever.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Design competitions bridge the gap between members of architecture firms and the public. Participation in competitions provides the public with an inside view of how firms stretch the bounds of their creativity. This creative and ambitious competition submission has captured audiences around the world both on paper and through presentation by Principal Manoj Dalaya, AIA. For this competition, a team was formed that represented all of KGD Architecture, from the newest staff members to the firm partners. All ideas were brought to the table and developed through a series of design charrettes. The best concepts were merged and finessed to form our final design. Internal social networking was used to share ideas and inspiration. Our process demonstrates the collaboration, technological interaction, and hierarchy-free work processes that will be supported by our office building of the future. Our design was supported by structural engineering provided by Arup, assuring that our office building of the future would indeed be possible. Book Building the Future

Download or read book Building the Future written by Amy Edmondson and published by Berrett-Koehler Publishers. This book was released on 2016-04-18 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Niccolò Machiavelli famously wrote, "There is nothing more difficult to take in hand, more perilous to conduct, or more uncertain in its success than to take the lead in the introduction of a new order of things." That's what this book is about--innovation far more audacious than a new way to find a restaurant or a smart phone you can wear on your wrist. Harvard professor Amy Edmondson and journalist Susan Salter Reynolds explore how to bring into being systems that transform human experience and make the world more livable and sustainable. This demands "big teaming": intense collaboration across professions and industries that may have completely different mindsets and even be antagonistic to each other. To do this successfully requires practicing new forms of leadership that combine an expansive vision with incremental action--not an easy balance. To reveal how pioneers build the future, Edmondson and Reynolds tell the story of Living PlanIT, an award-winning "smart city" start-up with a breathtakingly ambitious goal: building a showcase high-tech city from scratch to pilot its software. This meant a joint effort spanning a truly disparate group of software entrepreneurs, real estate developers, city government officials, architects, construction companies, and technology corporations. We get to know Living PlanIT's leaders and follow them and their partners through cycles of hope, exhaustion, disillusionment, pragmatism, and renewal. There are powerful lessons here for anyone, in any industry, seeking to transform the world.

Book Building Public Trust

Download or read book Building Public Trust written by Samuel A. DiPiazza, Jr. and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2002-09-18 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Business reporting in a post-apocalypse global marketplace Clearly, now is the time for creating an effective business-reporting model appropriate for the markets of the twenty-first century. Rather than start from scratch after the Enron-Andersen fiasco, two leading consultants from PricewaterhouseCoopers present a plan that supplements the current model, one in which executives, accountants, analysts, investors, regulators, and other stakeholders can truly embrace the spirit of transparency. The Future of Corporate Reporting highlights the best practices for global financial reporting, explaining the concept of "performance auditing," which focuses on the real performance of the business as opposed to technical adherence to GAAS. Eccles and Masterson also discuss the pros and cons of GAAP v. IAS, present new approaches to reforming financial reporting, and outline a twenty-first-century model of accounting that will improve markets and benefit shareholders.

Book The Work of the Future

Download or read book The Work of the Future written by David H. Autor and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2023-10-03 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why the United States lags behind other industrialized countries in sharing the benefits of innovation with workers and how we can remedy the problem. The United States has too many low-quality, low-wage jobs. Every country has its share, but those in the United States are especially poorly paid and often without benefits. Meanwhile, overall productivity increases steadily and new technology has transformed large parts of the economy, enhancing the skills and paychecks of higher paid knowledge workers. What’s wrong with this picture? Why have so many workers benefited so little from decades of growth? The Work of the Future shows that technology is neither the problem nor the solution. We can build better jobs if we create institutions that leverage technological innovation and also support workers though long cycles of technological transformation. Building on findings from the multiyear MIT Task Force on the Work of the Future, the book argues that we must foster institutional innovations that complement technological change. Skills programs that emphasize work-based and hybrid learning (in person and online), for example, empower workers to become and remain productive in a continuously evolving workplace. Industries fueled by new technology that augments workers can supply good jobs, and federal investment in R&D can help make these industries worker-friendly. We must act to ensure that the labor market of the future offers benefits, opportunity, and a measure of economic security to all.

This book was released on 2005-01-08 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Department of Defense is in the process of transforming the nation's armed forces to meet the military challenges of the 21st century. Currently, the opportunity exists to carry out experiments at individual and joint service levels to facilitate this transformation. Experimentation, which involves a spectrum of activities including analyses, war games, modeling and simulation, small focused experiments, and large field events among other things, provides the means to enhance naval and joint force development. To assist the Navy in this effort, the Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) asked the National Research Council (NRC) to conduct a study to examine the role of experimentation in building future naval forces to operate in the joint environment. The NRC formed the Committee for the Role of Experimentation in Building Future Naval Forces to perform the study.

Book Designing the Office of the Future

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent technological advances in telecommunications, electronics, security, automation, and building control systems create many new challenges for workplace designers. The "workplace of the future" must accommodate these new technologies and changing work styles in appropriate physical, environmental, and organizational settings to enhance worker speed, communication, and overall productivity. The Advanced Building Systems Integration Consortium, an industry-university partnership established at Carnegie Mellon University, is dedicated to researching and developing the quality of the workplace through the innovative use of advanced technologies. This important work reports on the major findings of the multidisciplinary field team in the study of a few key Japanese office buildings. The authors focus on a selected set of design features - components and integrated systems - that herald innovative future trends and stand the test of occupancy evaluation. Designing the Office of the Future provides the general approach of the Advanced Building Systems Integration Consortium (ABSIC) to the building studies and their use towards the development of advanced products and workplaces. The book reports generalized findings from the international building studies in four countries, explains the intellectual framework of the team's approach to defining advanced workplaces, and presents the details of the actual building evaluation process. The book then presents an overview of Japanese trends drawn from the in-depth building studies and other building visits, as well as critical readings and discussions with Japanese leaders in intelligent building design. Other topics covered include theselection of innovative components, systems, and processes identified by the multidisciplinary team in four Japanese buildings - Toshiba Headquarters, NTT Twins Regional Headquarters, the ARK Mori Building, and the Umeda Center building. Designing the Office of the Future then discusses new developments in building design technology, and concludes with a list of major design changes to be introduced into the technologically advanced workplace.
