Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Oecumenical Documents of the Faith: The Creed of Nicaea, Three Epistles of Cyril, the Tome of Leo, the Chalcedonian Definition A Creed is tho outward verbal expression of an inwardly existing Faith, and Faith is a spiritual energy which sympathetically welcomes a revealed Truth. The revelation of tho Truth in the Person of the Incarnate Son of God is a historic fact. Its firm outlines have been preserved in the Creeds of the Church; its limitless embrace is beyond the powers of fallen man; yet each age of reverent scrutiny on the part of the regenerate has added something to the apprehension of its breadth and length and depth and height. The aim of the present volume is more simple. It is to present the original texts of the outlines of the Church's teaching on the Doctrines of the Holy Trinity and of the Incarnation, so far as they were denned by the First Four Oecumenical Councils, and to endeavour to elucidate them by means of historical and dogmatic annotations. Download or read book The Interface of Science Theology and Religion written by Dennis Ngien and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-03-07 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In celebration of Alister E. McGrath's sixty-fifth birthday in 2018, this Festschrift aims to highlight him as a lauded scholar, who exemplifies an interface of science, theology, and religion. It comprises works by McGrath's theological allies and colleagues from diverse ecclesial homes including Graham Ward, Oliver Crisp, Tony Lane, Sung Wook Chung, Randall Zachman, Veli-Matti Karkkainen, Jonathan Wilson, Jeffrey P. Greenman, Robert Kolb, Sister Benedicta Ward, Michael Lloyd, Bethany Sollereder, and Patrick Franklin. Critical but appreciative is the posture with which these contributors engage the wide range of McGrath's own scholarly pursuits and publications. This volume, edited by Dennis Ngien, covers these themes that are central to the life and witness of the church: atonement, Christology, Trinity, eschatology, mission, Reformation, science, nature, culture, evangelism, and theodicy--there is much to ponder and reap here. Readers will join with the contributors and pay tribute to McGrath who has risen to a life of significance as a scientist turned theologian, professor, author, Christian apologist, and churchman.

Download or read book Catholicity and Heresy in the Early Church written by Dr Mark Edwards and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-05-28 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While it has often been recognised that the development of Christian orthodoxy was stimulated by the speculations of those who are now called heretics, it is still widely assumed that their contribution was merely catalytic, that they called forth the exposition of what the main church already believed but had not yet been required to formulate. This book maintains that scholars have underrated the constructive role of these "heretical" speculations in the evolution of dogma, showing that salient elements in the doctrines of the fall, the Trinity and the union of God and man in Christ derive from teachings that were initially rejected by the main church. Mark Edwards also reveals how authors who epitomised orthodoxy in their own day sometimes favoured teachings which were later considered heterodox, and that their doctrines underwent radical revision before they became a fixed element of orthodoxy. The first half of the volume discusses the role of Gnostic theologians in the formation of catholic thought; the second half will offer an unfashionable view of the controversies which gave rise to the councils of Nicaea, Ephesus and Chalcedon . Many of the theories advanced here have not been broached elsewhere, and no synthesis on this scale had been attempted by other scholars. While this book proposes a revision in the scholarly perception of early Christendom, it also demonstrates the essential unity of the tradition.
