Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edition of Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca's Relación offers readers Rolena Adorno and Patrick Charles Pautz's celebrated translation of Cabeza de Vaca's account of the 1527 Pánfilo de Narváez expedition to North America. The dramatic narrative tells the story of some of the first Europeans and the first-known African to encounter the North American wilderness and its Native inhabitants. It is a fascinating tale of survival against the highest odds, and it highlights Native Americans and their interactions with the newcomers in a manner seldom seen in writings of the period. In this English-language edition, reproduced from their award-winning three-volume set, Adorno and Pautz supplement the engrossing account with a general introduction that orients the reader to Cabeza de Vaca's world. They also provide explanatory notes, which resolve many of the narrative's most perplexing questions. This highly readable translation fires the imagination and illuminates the enduring appeal of Cabeza de Vaca's experience for a modern audience.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca (c. 1490/1507-c. 1557/1559) was an early Spanish explorer of the New World and is remembered as a proto-anthropological author. As treasurer, and hence one of the chief officers, of the Narvaez expedition, he and three others were the only survivors of the party of 300 men who landed near Tampa Bay, Florida on April 15, 1528. Over the course of eight years, various members of the expedition succumbed to disease, starvation, exposure, and the attacks of various Native American groups as they slowly made their way west, toward Mexico, where they knew there were other Spaniards. Others among them simply gave up the effort and "went native." For a few years, the survivors were enslaved by various Native American tribes of the upper Gulf coast. Only the final four-Cabeza de Vaca, Dorantes, Castillo, and a Moroccan Berber named Esteban (who was later called Estevanico)-ultimately escaped and eventually reached Mexico City. During his wanderings, passing from tribe to tribe, he developed sympathies for the indigenous population. He eventually became a trader, which allowed him freedom to travel among the tribes. He wrote about his experiences in a report for Charles V. It was later published in 1542, under the title La Relacion (The Report), later known as Naufragios, and is considered a classic of colonial literature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cabeza de Vaca is the account of his experiences with the Narvaez expedition and after being wrecked on Galveston Island in November 1528. Cabeza de Vaca and his last three men struggled to survive. They wandered along the Texas coast as prisoners of the Han and Capoque American Indians for two years, while Cabeza de Vaca observed the people, picking up their ways of life and customs. They traveled through the American Southwest and ultimately reached Mexico City, nearly eight years after being wrecked on the island. In 1537, Cabeza de Vaca returned to Spain, where he wrote his narratives of the Narvaez expedition. These narratives were collected and published in 1542 in Spain. They are now known as The Relation of lvar Nez Cabeza de Vaca. The narrative of Cabeza de Vaca is the "first European book devoted completely to North America." His detailed account describes the lives of numerous tribes of American Indians of the time. Cabeza de Vaca showed compassion and respect for native peoples, which, together with the great detail he recorded, distinguishes his narrative from others of the period.Cabeza de Vaca reported on the customs and ways of American Indian life, aware of his status as an early European explorer. He spent eight years with various peoples, including the Capoque, Han, Avavare, and Arbadao. He describes details of the culture of the Malhado people, the Capoque, and Han American Indians, such as their treatment of offspring, their wedding rites, and their main sources of food.

As of the sixteenth century, no European had journeyed over such a large extension of territory, from the Florida Peninsula to northern Mexico, and survived. This lively and informative volume goes on to examine his eight years of wandering in this unknown land, during which he learned natural medicine from the American natives and became a curandero, learned their languages, and served as a trader and peacemaker among different tribes. Vibrant illustrations complement and expand on this memorable, but often overlooked story.

Book The Power Within Us

Book excerpt: A retelling of one of the most heroic and soul-stirring adventures in the history of America. Four centuries ago a shipwrecked sailor, Cabeza de Vaca, reported to his king on the dangers and hardships which he and his companions faced in the trek from Florida to the Pacific. It was a story of disaster in Spanish colonial history; yet in the world of the individual it was a story of triumph. The weather-beaten explorer, lost in a thorny land among copper-colored savages and facing a blank future, discovered religion to be a reality of which he had never dreamt. He helped when he had no means of helping. He gave when he had nothing to give. His plight was hopeless but he set in motion a train of thought and action which saved him. Cabeza de Vaca's mystical feeling about the increase in life in a man in danger, from effort, from taking thought of his fellows, lies between the lines of his guarded report for the royal ear.--Jacket flap
