Book excerpt: We look about us at the human plight and recognize the folly of egocentric motivation. The structures of civilization including art, philosophy and law are steadfastly eroded through the artifices and subterfuge of self-interest. Even religious conviction, founded upon the uncertainties of belief and faith are readily misrepresented and distorted by the passions of sanctioned authority. An entirely contrary position to the essential tenets of a particular, enlightened theology is thereby promoted to accommodate self-interest.

Book excerpt: Blending architecture, design, and technology, a visual tour through futures past via the objects we have replaced, left behind, and forgotten. So-called extinct objects are those that were imagined but were never in use, or that existed but are now unused—superseded, unfashionable, or simply forgotten. Extinct gathers together an exceptional range of artists, curators, architects, critics, and academics, including Hal Foster, Barry Bergdoll, Deyan Sudjic, Tacita Dean, Emily Orr, Richard Wentworth, and many more. In eighty-five essays, contributors nominate “extinct” objects and address them in a series of short, vivid, sometimes personal accounts, speaking not only of obsolete technologies, but of other ways of thinking, making, and interacting with the world. Extinct is filled with curious, half-remembered objects, each one evoking a future that never came to pass. It is also a visual treat, full of interest and delight.

Book excerpt: Discover Your Truths & Fulfill Your Dreams If you have ever doubted yourself, your life's path, beliefs, or questioned what is True, prepare to illuminate the path to Your Personal Truth. This is the best path. It is the one you are called for and that you must go on, or you will be left feeling unfulfilled, as if you missed out on something essential from life. We all have our unique journey to live, and nothing is more worthy than pursuing this path for yourself. The point of this book is not to impose any particular beliefs, ideas, philosophies, or Truths on you. Instead, the focus is on helping you find your truth in a way that allows you to achieve your dreams and goals. Can you think of something that you know to be True without any doubt? When you know something to be True, it becomes a deep part of your life, and you know it to be true with your thoughts, feelings, beliefs, experience, logic, and intuition, then you can get to a point where no one can take this Truth away from you. The only one who can release yourself from an old Truth that is no longer working and replace it with a new and more valid one is yourself. With Your Personal Truth, you can regain control of your life's direction and take the power you have always had but perhaps never realized, which is the power to determine what is true for you and what is not. Ultimately, Truth is a journey, not a destination. When you choose to walk this path, you will unlock deeper parts of yourself, discover your highest ideals and values, find purpose, and live by your truth with every thought and action. Internationally bestselling author I. C. Robledo discovered that his path was to seek Truth at 16 years of age. Since then, he has been searching for truth, and now he wishes to teach you how to discover Your Personal Truth. This endeavor has led to meaning, a transcendent level of awareness and understanding, self-knowledge, and the ability to focus on worthy paths and avoid false ones. Inside, you will learn to: Discover your truths, rather than waiting for someone to give them to you, which would be a mistake Identify critical values that are worth living by (with a list of 100 values to consider) Unlock the deepest parts of yourself by remembering, uncovering, recovering, discovering, and creating yourself Test your truths to see which ones are valid and which ones were just faulty assumptions Move toward the paths that lead to confidence, awareness, happiness, and growth, and move away from the paths that lead to negativity, pain, and feelings of being lost.

Book The Final Elegy the Consolation of the Classics in Old Age

Download or read book The Final Elegy the Consolation of the Classics in Old Age written by Richard Oliver Brooks and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2022-08-01 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Old age is a time of losses- permanent, cumulative and irreversible. These losses include our loss of work in retirement, the eclipse of our past, our biological decline, dependency resulting from such decline, the foreshortening of our future, the abandonment of belief in our own improvement and our society’s progress, and, of course, our death. This book views these losses as part of an elegy of old age. Elegy is a poetic or prose mourning of loss. Sadness and other emotions result. With elegiac understanding we detach ourselves from these losses to seek and find consolation. This book is concerned with achieving intellectual detachment through meditative reflection with the help of reading and appreciating the classics. The final stage of the old age elegy- consolation can be found, at least in part, within the classics-“the garlands of repose”. The classics are broadly defined by Matthew Arnold as: “the best that [has} been thought and said: { or found in the fine arts}. To benefit from the classis requires a life-long liberal education. This education begins with an introduction to the classics in youth, makes use of them during our adult lives, and supplies their conclusion for old age meditation. Such significant works enable us to place the losses we suffer within an intellectual framework of perennial ideas. It is by means of such an intellectual framework that we secure consolation in old age. Classic works familiarize us deeply with the losses and emotions we endure-suggest substitutes for the goods of the life we have lost in old age, offer opportunities of catharsis for the sadness we experience and help us transform ourselves in old age. Classics help us see old age and its losses as part of a complete life which hold a unique value of its own, while remaining part of larger nature processes, history and intellectual traditions.

Book The Labour Party Nationalism and Internationalism 1939 1951

Download or read book The Labour Party Nationalism and Internationalism 1939 1951 written by R. M. Douglas and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Second World War was a watershed moment in foreign policy for the Labour Party in Britain. Before the war, British socialists had held that nationalism was becoming obsolete and that humanity was steadily evolving towards the ideal of a single world government. The collapse of the League of Nations destroyed this optimistic vision, compelling Labour to undertake a fundamental review of its entire approach to foreign affairs during a period of unprecedented global crisis. This book traces the controversy that ensued, as the British democratic left set about the task of defining the principles of a radically new international system for the postwar world. The schemes proposed by Labour policymakers during these years encompassed a wide variety of political institutions aiming at the restraint or supersession of the sovereign nation-state. What they shared in common, however, was a reconceptualization of British identity, in which the hyper-patriotism of the wartime period blended with the left's traditional internationalism. This new 'muscular' internationalism was to have a major impact upon the evolution of entities as diverse as the United Nations Organizations, the British Commonwealth and the accelerating campaign in favor of European unity after Labour assumed the reins of government in 1945. Breaking with the traditional accounts that place Cold War tensions at the centre of the Attlee government's activities in the immediate postwar years, R.M. Douglas's book provides an entirely new framework for reassessing British foreign policy and left-wing concepts of national identity during the most turbulent moment of Britain's modern history. This book will be essential reading for all students and researchers of British foreign policy, the Labour Party and international relations.
